@toastyovens Ghost in the Shell was made before the matrix. In fact, Matrix was inspired by ghost in the shell. Some scenes from GITS are directly copy pasted to the matrix.
It's the best english dub from an anime, to be honest if you hear the english first you'll probably hate the original. (though a lot of anime's have horrible dubs so it's best to watch subs)

ghost in the shell sac 1 + 2 and solid state society, plus cowboy bebop, are the only two anime i will say that english dub is far better than japanese!

@LCRDKazrai Maybe they use the same techniques but why does that mean that they are same in every way? O.o And sure there's even a different in the creating, with the paper for the animations. And they both have a huge different style in drawing as well. And another fact is that both are from two different cultures (countries) and the japanese people, the creators call it Anime (Anime=Animation) not Cartoon.
@LCRDKazrai So I would never compare an Anime to a Cartoon. It's a huge different in qualitiy, whether in quality of content or in graphic. And both got a different audience. So in my opninion it is a huge mistake to compare these two kinds of media. I guess you would never compare a Manga to a comic book, if you have ever read a manga. And like you know, Mangas are usually the scripts of Animes.

Look at the Spiderman comics. There is the original series in which both comic, and show are based. Woohoo, there are pannels, pages, and sound effects. Difference is, it's read the opposite direction, and is all in English. Oh my, does it change a book from being a book? No. Same thing, different continent.

An animated cartoon is typically seen as "a short, hand-drawn (or made with computers to look similar to something hand-drawn) film for the cinema, television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot (even if it is a very short one)." I believe GITS falls into that as does all anime.

I love anime as much as the next person but if we are discussing semantics then yes anime falls under the broad category of "cartoon". Please look up the definition of that word

Yeah, I watched the original ghost in the shell when i was 15, and I still have to re-watch it, like I'm taking in bits of the story over the years.
The series seems easier to watch in one pass, but i think that's because I'm now somewhat "trained" in how to pick up on the details of the storytelling style.

@givmespace Yeah too true. I remeber watching Akira, Robot Carnival, the first Tenchi Muyo, Spriggan, among others before I was even five years old. That did very wierd things to my brain.
However, I think kids should watch anime like this - it puts ideas in their head that could guide their development in very positive ways.
The film has lots of cool scenes. But unfortunately, they don't form a good whole. It's kind of a sequel to the original movie and Innocence, but it lacks all the depth and even removes most of the mystery that is created by those two movies.
Solid State Society is fun to watch, but I'd consider it non-canonical.
The two movies don't have a sequel, and since the Major left her "shell" to become a ghost in the net during the first movie, I loosely interpret the TV series as a prequel, but officially they are not part of the same story chronology. Solid State Society is the sequel to the Individual Eleven, when the Tachcoma's sacrifice themselves, and then the new green units are ordered. This series has those same green units.
I rather liked all of the on the same level. As for the subs being better, normaly I'd go with that, but with with Gits & Full Metal Alchemist, I prefer the Dubs. The voice actors they've got are rather good, imo

The second season is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Second Gig (GISSACSG to complicate things).

You don't have to watch them in this order but things do make a lot more sense.
There was also an older movie that came out, but I can't find it anywhere.

We're in the future where people are regularly outfitted with mechanical prosthesis, from a few organ repairs to being almost fully robotic with only your brain and part of your spinal cord left. Solid State Society is a movie follow up to SAC and 2nd Gig about two years after the events of 2nd Gig. A hacker known as "The Puppeteer" has been orchestrating high-profile suicides. The Wikipedia articles give pretty good summaries if you want.

man, i miss the days back in the 90's when i was considered a nerd for being in to anime before it became so main stream. in the mid 90's i was still in middle school and the only animes people knew about were the big 3: ghost in the shell, akira, and ninja scroll. i remember being the only one in my school who was into it and getting made fun of. i was actually happy that way because i felt original. video games and anime were my way of giving the finger to the mainstream. now nerds r "cool" =/

And they both have a huge different style in drawing as well. And another fact is that both are from two different cultures (countries) and the japanese people, the creators call it Anime (Anime=Animation) not Cartoon.

@LCRDKazrai So I would never compare an Anime to a Cartoon. It's a huge different in qualitiy, whether in quality of content or in graphic. And both got a different audience. So in my opninion it is a huge mistake to compare these two kinds of media. I guess you would never compare a Manga to a comic book, if you have ever read a manga. And like you know, Mangas are usually the scripts of Animes.

Look at the Spiderman comics. There is the original series in which both comic, and show are based. Woohoo, there are pannels, pages, and sound effects. Difference is, it's read the opposite direction, and is all in English. Oh my, does it change a book from being a book? No. Same thing, different continent.

An animated cartoon is typically seen as "a short, hand-drawn (or made with computers to look similar to something hand-drawn) film for the cinema, television or computer screen, featuring some kind of story or plot (even if it is a very short one)." I believe GITS falls into that as does all anime.

I'm not saying Ghost in the Shell is the same as an American cartoon or a French cartoon or whatever. Because they aren't. They're completely different. Anime commonly offers better animation, better storyline, better character development, better music -- everything. But it still animation. And animation is, inherently, by DEFINITION, an ANIMATED CARTOON. That is what ANIMATION is.

Yeah, I watched the original ghost in the shell when i was 15, and I still have to re-watch it, like I'm taking in bits of the story over the years.
The series seems easier to watch in one pass, but i think that's because I'm now somewhat "trained" in how to pick up on the details of the storytelling style.

However, I think kids should watch anime like this - it puts ideas in their head that could guide their development in very positive ways.

This movie is from a different continuity (there are three- the original manga, a pair of movies, and the two seasons of the TV series and its OVA.

The film has lots of cool scenes. But unfortunately, they don't form a good whole. It's kind of a sequel to the original movie and Innocence, but it lacks all the depth and even removes most of the mystery that is created by those two movies.
Solid State Society is fun to watch, but I'd consider it non-canonical.

SSS is not a sequel to the two movies; it is sequel to two TV series SAC and 2nd GIG.

The two movies don't have a sequel, and since the Major left her "shell" to become a ghost in the net during the first movie, I loosely interpret the TV series as a prequel, but officially they are not part of the same story chronology. Solid State Society is the sequel to the Individual Eleven, when the Tachcoma's sacrifice themselves, and then the new green units are ordered. This series has those same green units.

1. GITS Movie
2. GITS SAC (season 1) episode "meme"
3. GITS Innocence
4. GITS SAC 2nd Gig
5. GITS SAC Solid State Society
I just think there is a serious case of diminishing returns.
