I was lucky enough to be part of the science staff on the CCGS Louis S. St. laurent this summer during arctic operations and we visited with the Healy twice in the high Arctic. The USCG Healy is a great ship run by an exceptional crew. The Healy and the Louis broke ice for each other for the past several years in co-operative science missions and the collaberation is shining example of how our two countries should work together. Bravo Zulu to the Healy and the Louis.
1) USCGC Healy (the one in the video) max speed 17 kn; ice class - 1.4 m at speed 1-2 kn; 30500 horse powers by 2 x 11.2 MW diesel-electric turbines.
2) Rosatom`s Yamal; max speed 22 kn, 19.5 kn cruising speed; ice class 2.5 - 3.5 m (sic!) at speed 1-2 kn depending on density; 75000 horse powers by 2 x 171 MW nuclear reactors, which provide heat for 2 steam turbines, driving 6 generators.
How come US icebreakers have more power? Everyone knows Russia has the best icebreakers.
BTW Healy is not even the best US coast guard has, forget about the world. They have Polar Star which is a bit smaller but has an ice class of 1.8 m at 3 kn and at 1 kn. can take on ice of 3.5 m just like russian nuclear icebreakers, but only for a short time (unlike nuclear russians it requires refueling). Polar Star IS THE ONLY american icebreaker, that can even stand near russian ones.
Russia operates 4 Arktika class and many diesel powered icebreakers too, which are also good.
@Durmanstainer, by Polar class I referred to the Polar Sea and Polar Star, not the Healy. The electric motors of the 50 Let Pobedy put out 52.8 MW while the Polar class icebreakers can have 56 MW for short periods of time (not sure how long - perhaps hours?). Thus they have more power.
Anyway, both Arktika and Polar class icebreakers are, in my opinion, outdated, and some of the power is lost in inefficient icebreaking hull shape (updated in 50 Let Pobedy, but still old).

Russia ice breaker fleet is way ahead of the US. CGC Healy (the boat in the video) is a medium icebreaker and was designed to so science missions. The 2 heavy class ice breakers the US has Polar Star and Polar Sea are currently OOC. Russia is already building a new icebreaker and has 2-3 more on the way. The US has nothing planned and a fleet that is past its service life.

Did ANYONE ever think that perhaps the artic ice SHOULD NOT BE BROKEN UP!! Obviously cutting channels in artic ice breaks the white reflective patina and allows the ocean to HEAT UP!

Russia ice breaker fleet is way ahead of the US. CGC Healy (the boat in the video) is a medium icebreaker and was designed to so science missions. The 2 heavy class ice breakers the US has Polar Star and Polar Sea are currently OOC. Russia is already building a new icebreaker and has 2-3 more on the way. The US has nothing planned and a fleet that is past its service life.
