HDGD is not a sword art that originates from ancient Korea. It was created recently by some persons. The founders testified as such at the Korean law court.
Why doesn't they use the traditional Korean sword “Hwando (環刀) ”? KRIGATA and SAGEO for thrusting into a belt are the features of Japanese sword. It is not the traditional Korean sword.
I can never find such old Korean sword or Korean soldier's photograph.
The traditional Korean sword was hung at the waist or the shoulder.

Wow....is this Kendo (剣道) lesson ?? What is "Haedong kumdo " ??? Poor Korean now teaching Japanese Sword arts as Korean's to innocent European or American People.... I have never learnt that Korea has martial arts anyway.... recently I have seen so may video clips showing strange Fake Korean martial arts....
Why do they use samurai swords? If kumdo is based on Korean culture. They should use Korean traditional swords. Korean traditional swords are straignt and double-edged swords like Chinese ones. Koreans had preferentially used Chinese things because of sinocentrism. In fact, Haidong is not a historical existence. It was started recently. Asian people know that.
oh my gosh, are you serious?? both China and Korea have MANY types of swords -- some are straight; some are curved: some are double-edged; some are single-edged.
@centraltheorem2076 Well, even during chosun period Korean did have Japanese sword because of its superiority. And Koreans also did have double edged sword well as single edged blade. Anyway, Haedong kumdo was created late 70's based under japanese sword art.
People are still arguing about this? Both the Kendo and Haidong Gumdo nuthuggers are guilty of ignorance. Neither arts were copied from each other. Haidong Gumdo was systemized by Kim Jeong-ho in the early 1980's, when it branched off from Gichunmun. He took elements of Gichunmun (which is actually a derivative of Shandong Province's Mantis style), namely stances and kinetic linking, and intergrated them with Kim Chang-sik's Shimgumdo.
People - Kendo and Haidong Gumdo are not the same.
@KimInLosAngeles SOO TRUE! fuck you japs! i just wanna point out last years world series championship between korea and japan too. You do not know what you are talking about. Visit a good Haedong Kumdo dojang - then You see how we really train. Do you expect green belts to perform like higher belts ?? After six or so months of training, do You expect master-level performance? Have You ever been beginner...:-) ? Do You remember your own stances and your of stiffness? LOL
Hello I am a black belt in this martial art. The practice of gumdo is a rich and deep experience which teaches us the beauty and fragility of life and the indomitable spirit of the warrior. most of the forms up until black belt are designed to train the student how to wield the sword in ancient battlefield mindset. Yes this martial art is nothing like kendo(also a wonderful warrior tradition) but it is a very valid and wonderful method of sword training...may you all find your bliss.
Very well said. I am HK instructor, and actually i have been instructing these students who perform in this demo/video. It is good that persons from HK/HG society says what this martial art is all about. It is certainly NOT kendo - it is very complicated and logical way of how to use sword - and how to live right way. All the best from HK 3rd dan.
I do not have time and interested to communicate with such narrow minded person like you. You cant even see that your art, Kendo, has nothing to do with battlefield fighting. It is not any traditional Kenjutsu-ryu. It is just modern competition sport. Very nice as sportsplay, but actually NOTHING to do with sword fighting. Secundarily, You obviously know nothing about HK - among many other things You obviously know nothing about. Have a great day and have a nice life! :-)
It is a martial art based on one vs many (not one vs one like kendo) also is completly different to kendo because HG and HK give more importance to the forms (katas in japanese) and kendo is focus in combat... about "DAN", there are many words that mean the same and are writen equal in japanese and korean like "DO" gumDO, taekwonDO, kenDO, aikiDO and the meaning is the same "way" or another similar is "dojang" or "dojo" in japanese ^^
You have COMPLETE misunderstandings. Kendo is all about Kata. If you hit opponent without kata, hit isn't effective. And in Japan, it call DO(道)too. DAN, wear, words, all copied Japanese one. And this thing is originated in mid 20th century. It is not completely different, but it is 90% copy of Kento, I would say.
Haedong Kumdo is NOT kendo. It is much more. Black belts practise with real sword, it is not game. Many people seem to misundertand and think that we have something to do with Kendo. No, we have nothing to do with kendo. If You (Gosling3) are martial artist, Your teacher obviously did not reming You about importance if good behavior. Judging something as "shit" tells alot about person. Advanced personalities does not need such expressions... Think about that, and talk with You sensei.
Nothing to do with Kendo...then stop wearing kendo wear, stop use Kendo swords, and stop use same words like DAN classification. And Blackbelts are for Judo and Karate only. Not on Korean and Chinese martial arts.
As I am a Kendo player myself. Importance of behavior means not stealing from someone and claim it as if it belong to you. That's bottom line of good behavior. Kendo organization never claimed this copy crap...I think they should.
Did anyone suggest they should use same cloth and same stick to make it similar? And to make it bit difference by adding chiild play like swings from anime actions? Japanese Kendo is not like this child play.
Just because someone is doing things differently than in Japan doesnt make it wrong - just different.
Just choose yourself favorite martial art and practice it until you drop - whining about what is the best / most effective / "right" or whatever martial art is the most childish thing there is.
Surely you will post us some great kendo kata of your own?
Though id love to start a debate with you, ill will not. It would degenerate down into meaningless simple minded flame-trolling war and youd win me by experience.
As much as I personally dislike kendo and see it as an impractical sword style, it's above Kumdo in its legitimacy.
Kumdo was and still is a complete fabrication developed in the 1980's by someone meditating on a sword and not training with it. Which explains the poor technique.
Meditations are root of this, what they call "worrier swordmanship"....I knew founder made HK with this way...but hey, sorry, I completely miss the point.. How one can make swording by meditation?
And why they should use Kendo wear and Kendo-like sword (shinai, or bokuto) and classification call DAN? I think this is COMPLETE CHEATING on someone who do not know Kendo and its tradition.
Actually, these are very well made forms according to their level. Did You realize that they was just green belts when this video was recorded (2nd colored belt in Haedong Kumdo, after white and yellow)? If You have nothing productive to say, just shut up and go to "do it better" yourself. Obviously You are not high level martial artist, if You would be- You would not write such stupid comment.Martial art training is also to cultivate personality, if thats missing... good luck.

It is monkey business to insist on the Korea samurai and martial arts without a Korean having existed.
It is a fact that Korea was a dependency of Chinese 明、清 for a long time in 李氏朝鮮 Korea.
There are not society background and the base which there is a samurai.

Archery was the only martial art that had been practiced by Korean soldiers. They have no skills of sword or spear fighting.

The samurai did not exist in the history of the Korean Peninsula.
As for the times when a Korean places a sword in a waist and existed like a samurai in a hakama, there is not it.
A Korean opens the dojo studio, and neither the times when I trained nor the place nor the document nor the record has mind and body.
In 李氏朝鮮 Korea of 500 years, the background of the existence of the samurai does not have the method of the life, too either.

Such a useless movement is not martial arts.

Is a sword a dangerous thing?
It is not a thing living on play.

According to a Japanese, I am seen only in the play of the amateur.

Japanese are spreading lies that Koreans copied Japanese style.
Chinese & Korean styles are focused to fight SEVERAL enemies in surrounding environment.
Japanese style is more focused on ONE on ONE.
Basic strategies of Korean & Japanese are DIFFERENT.
Europeans don't accuse other Europeans of copying their style of fencing, archery, etc.
Even the Chinese DON'T accuse Koreans of copying their style.
Only Japanese accuse Koreans of copying their style.
