everyone's saying this is about religeon, but i don't see it, i think it's just a beautiful song and i don't believe in god either so i'm just going to listen to the song as it is... lovely
Why can't we just listen to the song instead of trying to be logical about all the details? I think we're doing the opposite of what music was really meant to do for us.
I give most of my music away for free under a creative commons license for non commercial use. I am happy that people want to download my music and share it. But if you can afford to pay, and would like to help me and other struggling artists like me to make a living, then why not consider some of the alternatives, for example…. This song attacks my nostalgia. My love, my love lost, my mistakes, her mistakes, and how when it was all said and done, I wouldn't trade it away for the world. For those who have never loved, prepare for the best surprise of your life. Nothing as liberating as the ride of your emotions. Thank you Mr. Beam for the whirlwind ten minutes.
This song brings to my mind thoughts of good food, good people, and contentment.
There is also an ephemeral "something" in the background that makes me remember my dead loved ones; the girl who broke my heart when I was a teen, my shortcomings, and my psychological fights with myself... It has a helluva vibe.
Looking at the comments tells me exactly why this song is so wonderful. It creates meaning for anyone. People who've lost their friends and family, people falling for someone, or losing someone. Young and old, and all different emotions. It's universally applicable and it brings people together. This is what music should be.
@musicnomster i prefer to just listen, stuff like this, i like to hear without thinking too much into what it means, but i think it's something to do with death and memory?
Just got broken up with by a guy I moved my entire life for, and actually took him to see Iron and Wine for his birthday last year. Funny that I now use Iron and Wine to remedy my broken heart <3 Thanks Sam.
@jessierbearbait I totally understand where you are coming from. This was my song with an ex that I left my whole life for that person, my dog, school, apt, family, everything. Had the best valentines day ever in my entire life and I had some great boyfriends in the past but this was like a fairytale. after seven days he calls my mom and says that he is sorry to her for breaking my heart and that he would have me home that night. Yea I was home tht nite after he packed my life back into my car
@Sockheadableful I know that you were just making a point about the song's beauty, but why would one have to 'drop' their atheism to feel every note and lyric as deeply and profoundly as someone who is religious? I just feel that you can watch a sunset and get a wonderful feeling without attributing it to the fact that 'therefore' there is a god. This song is reasonably long, so hopefully this comment can be pondered and then we can all get back to enjoying this man's incredible talent :D
@illemE35 Agreed, be it the fact that it reflects one's views upon the perspectives of nature. However, my comment is just a fact that I find this song is benevolent in a way, I'm not saying I am "dropping", but it's just acquiring the fact that one verse of the song clearly portrays some sort of delusion, and I just don't mind it for that particular moment, hence the so called "dropping my atheism".
Well let's not argue any longer shall we (at least not here)? Let's just all enjoy the song.
@DuddBudda Incorrect. Sam Beam has openly discussed this song as the significant mark in his finding g-d. That's what this song is entirely about according to the man who wrote it.
I can play this song no matter what mood I'm in. There is absolutely no way to put into words the beauty and inspiration this song gives me on a daily basis. Sam Beam is such a unique and creative genius. I cannot wait to see him perform live for the very first time.
There are only three songs in all the world that make me feel like my heart is a burning supernova and someone has brushed a warm hand from my neck all the way down my spine.
The Shins - New Slang and Adem - Statued. I Will Follow You Into the Dark on birthdays. And the first minute of every new year. And when I feel a sudden, inexplicable rush of euphoria for absolutely no reason.
You know that list of songs you have that will always be a little hard to listen to after losing "the one that got away"? Almost two years later, this is still one of them..
I force myself to listen to it though, just because it's so damn beautiful.(:
My favorite aunt died in a car crash recently and tonight, when I wanted something sweet to fall asleep to I went to this. I laid back and all of my emotions just exploded out of me, like a waterfall of sadness and longing. "Please remember me, fondly/ I heard from someone you're still pretty." Aunt Melody, Nonnie and Pop Pop named you accurately. You were the song of the family, and when I walked into your party everybody turned to me and cried. Used to say I was you.
@Rainlitnight 'contrary to popular belief, i am not a bridge dwelling troll. i am actually a marine troll. i reside in small secluded coves, on reefs, and sometimes youll find me lounging on the beach soaking up a little sun. im often misjudged like that. but its okay, i dont blame you. i blame the american society, seeing as how they condone discrimination and alienation due to difference. no worries.
@Rainlitnight 'another common misconception. trolls are not able to be provoked. we trolls often lurk around in search of what we call "bait." (sad stories, happy stories, stories in general, anything trollable, etc.) and we do what we do best. we troll. it isnt caused by the victim, not directly. lern2troll.
@HoursTillAutumnx quit being an imature dillhole on pages with beautiful music trollings for little kids and people with little to no friends who refuse to grow up not trolling the troll either just offering advice to grow up sooneer rather than later.

@HoursTillAutumnx Your a pathetic person for saying you don't care even if you do call it "trolling." Who gives a shit what KIND of troll you are?!?! Have some empathy and respect for once, jerk. If you're looking for understanding and for "American society" to accept differences - typically yours - then you must first understand those of others.
@Crazyladiesonfire I see your point, but the subject of a song is of little importance if it's done right. Having both is what makes great music though, as I&R proves right here.
Another great song is Dancing in the Moonlight by Magnet. It doesn't have nearly enough views on the video and I'm sort of sad that it's not better known. Please do look it up. And maybe come back and thumbs this up if you like the song?
@joselito3000 britney spears fine, but kesha isnt a bad singer....your only listening to what her record company makes her sing. because its what the regular populace crave. look up some of her older, solo stuff. youll be suprised
@menomoniehockey It's definitely not a Depeche Mode ripoff of that song. It may put you in mind of that song, but the two are pretty much nothing alike.
I love Iron and Wine, but this seems to be a bit of a rip-off of Depeche Mode's "It Doesn't Matter" ...or a massive coincidence. Either way, both bands are great and it would be very cool if such different genres were influencing each other.
This song makes my soul dance. I heard this song for the first time in July of 2005. I was 14 years old and I thought I was invincible. Now I'm almost 21 and I haven't grown much in years but I have matured, greatly. It's interesting to take the intelligence and knowledge I have gained and apply it to this song, I come out with a completely different message than I did in 2005. Yet, it still means so much to me. <3
Is it just me or is it incredibly difficult to tell Iron and Wines' songs apart from one another? Seems they all follow the same monotonous recipe as Jack Johnson songs...
This song is simply timeless. Material of this caliber will be heard and talked about for years to come. We are all blessed to be graced by the presence of such an artistic presence.

God and Lucifer

@metalmike83 No, I mean actual music, stuff you can clearly tell was composed and is enjoyable. Not just some person speaking to a beat.

@menomoniehockey I like both songs but...I honestly see no similarities between the two lol.

@menomoniehockey Rhythms are going to repeat themselves eventually as the years pass. There's only a finite amount of notes you can do on a guitar.
And I too see no similarities.

This song makes me grin like an idiot. Fills me with life. Gives me hope.
I'll never understand why. It just does.

This is the song I'd choose to listen to if you could only listen to one song for the rest of forever<3

This is one of the most beautifully written songs I have ever heard, it's so damn poetic.

Truly wonderfull lyrics.

Is it just me or is it incredibly difficult to tell Iron and Wines' songs apart from one another? Seems they all follow the same monotonous recipe as Jack Johnson songs...

This is incredibly underwhelming compared to some of the live versions (MESSIAH COLLAGE).
