Thanks! I think I've pretty much learned everything to do with the pen tool, so I'm working with the mesh tool.
Question- can you pen out the shape of the arm with the pen tool instead of starting with the box? Will it end out the same as far as having the mesh right?
@acidsyringe69 the issue is when you add the mesh to a freehand or pen tooled shape the mesh becomes hard if not impossible to shape accurately. The square forces the mesh to stay clean.
Ive been wrestling with the mesh tool on complex shapes for the last 2 months moderately complex shapes fine but complex shapes the mesh lines go where ever they feel like, Im making a game so Ive got a lot of art work to do and Im too much of a perfectionist for my own good, I thought Id never get it done, this rectangle trick has saved my sanity thank you so much :)))))))
Great tut man, thanks a lot. I do have a question for ya...I'm attempting to do a mesh on a face for a portion of a piece I'm doing. When you're mapping the face, do you do the whole thing in one mesh, or do you break it down into pieces (eyes, mouth, cheeks, etc.) and have multiple layers you later blend at the end? Any other pointers on face work are greatly appreciated!
Todd, For the bust area, did you create the colors flat and then "shape" them using a mesh for shading? I can't get over how precise the polka dots are. Could you share where you got the reference image?
this is the 3rd tutorial of yours that I have watched and I find them great I'm Just hoping That The cs5 isn't too different. thanks for taking the time to do them.
Is there a previous set of videos that goes into the steps before this video? I only see two with the pinup girl, would like to see the full series from start to finish.
I cant get the eye next to my layer to go white like that. i am hitting what i guess is the apple button now (command) but it is not working for me. It is very annoying tryin to use the mesh tool and not being able to see what is under it
If your on a PC it is Control button. Or just go up to the menu bar and click on WINDOW and go down to OUTLINE preview. It will also show the key command to the right of that.
Hey dude great tutorial. I would advise learning more shortcuts, your design time will be reduced greatly. Like holding Option to momentarily switch to the Convert Anchor Point Tool.
Very good tutorial, I'm in an Illustrator class in college and they expect us to pump out great looking stuff, but don't teach us any of this stuff. This really helped me out :D
You can and maybe should use a mesh black and white shape as you mask to make it smoother. I like using black as the mask shape because it helps me remember as per Layer Masks in PS
You almost have an accent like elmer fudd.

Try both and see what you like better.

@TheRealAndroid
The dots are hand drawn and colored to give the illusion they are wrapping around.
Thanks, Todd

Insted of using the reshaping tool, why don't you just press Alt with the Direct Selection Tool selected ? It will save you a lot of time :)
