I am pretty sure that the ceramic he is talking about is a secondary reaction of the aluminum oxide with the sand (silicon dioxide) to form aluminosilicates, which are components of clays. There is also some glass there too, of course, from the melting and solidifying of silicon dioxide.

try this then.. i said zippo flints.. powder a bit of zippo flint, take a magnet near it.. yes its magnetic.. ferro-cerium is a combination of ferrum (iron) and cerium to create an alloy a bit like flint.. flint makes close to same effect in flashpowder as ferrocerium
