Saw this band support Wishbone Ash at Newcastle City Hall and they were cracking. I would have hated to follow them on stage. Their first album is still great to listen to.
Yes, exceptional talent and you can be really proud of your Dad, Ricky, Dunkz! I hope they all retired prosperous - when you see the coin that Oasis pulled in one can only wonder if The Motors were destined for fame and fortune in the wrong era.
Loved this era Motors - the first two singles, this and `Be What You Gotta Be`, were the high point for me. `Airport` was a real low point (synths, AAAARGH!!!), but redeemed themselves with `Tenement Steps` and `Forget About You`. Vastly underrated, great to see this posting - THANKS!!
i saw them live in 77. Very talented they were overwhelmed by punk, not sure which way to turn. their subsequent hit Airport was far more representative of what they were about.Watching bands trying to "punk up" as they were here was embarassing- although this is a decent song.
@garylongden they weren't trying to punk up. They, and groups like them, the Feelgoods for instance were the vanguard of punk. They paved the way for the Pistols and what followed.
@Breitheamhnaig i was there, and chatted to the band backstage when "airport" was being toured. The Motors were not in the vanguard of anything. The Feelgoods were at the forefront of the Pub rock scene with hatfield and the North, Kursall Flyers, Eddie and the Hot Rods and Graham parker and the Rumour - all were subsumed by Punk and cannot claim to be in the vanguard, they were in the last wave.
Except the pistols formed in 1975, 2 years before The Motors. The pistols had already released anarchy in the UK and god save the queen in 1976, the motors formed in 1977.
Bram Tchaikovsky's on the right not the left as the video states! I thought the skinny ginger little man was great, and his eponymous first album was and (If you can find it) was a treasure!
Bloody amazing song , turn it up to 29 on the old ford cougar cd player and rock my way to work, watch the faces turn as i pass them by . awesome bloody great track the louder the better
BBC : always kept the levels down, plenty of 'headroom' so no ditortion, but for this, its just ridiculous. And what is on the bass player's T shirt ? Camera seems to avoid it. There were penty of good bands that got overshadowed by the Sex Pistols/Clash media blitz. How many gigs did either of those bands play ? I would guess about 100 in the UK. If that.
@Jlipnicki It looks like "SCREW THE NUT AMERICA!" - whatever that means. Yeah I guess the pub rockers were kinda pushed out by the punk scene. Too bad because this is an awesome song!
@steveyjg The pub rockers were some of the same people that became the punk bands, see Mick Jones of The Clash with long hair, Ian Dury, and besides, there was nowhere else to play. You were either very big, or very small. It goes in circles, I have just discovered that Jethro Tull, amoungst others, played at a pub, now no longer there, just down the road. That was in the early 1970's.
Some of the Old Grey Whistle clips are just magic, this is one of them. The other that springs to mind is Eddie & Hot Rods Beginning of the End.

I saw them at the Marquee back in 1978. They were LOUD. The guitarist with the white shirt is a dead ringer for Duffy from the Fenn Street Gang!!
