X-button Kobold girl magic menu, left/right choose Mana Spirit, left/right choose big ass magic attack, B-button confirm magic attack, left/right choose all targets, B-Button confirm and watch it fire, press X-Button again in THE EXACT SPLIT SECOND THE MAGIC ATTACK ANIMATION ENDS AND CONTROLS ARE UP AGAIN BUT BEFORE DAMAGE MANIFESTS TO MAKE IT STACK, rinse and repeat with occasional breaks to let 999 dmg manifest and to cast Absorb MP/ eat walnut.
...Actually I just remembered it's not after the magic attack animation itself ends, but after the appearing mana spirit casting animation ends. Once the attack animation itself started, controls froze up, but timed right you could chain endlessly. I still can remember the short cute spirit animations so clearly. One always gave me trouble to time right... think it was the moonlight one.
I felt like a fucking king for having mastered this back then :D
What about the boss music for the fight between the heroes and Dark Lich!? Or the music from the ice country? Or the song from the ice palace? Eh, oh well. Most of the other selections were good enough for me to overlook the aforementioned omissions.
This brings back so many memories....I was only just a little girl and this game stood out from the rest while I watched my older sisters play it. When I finally picked it up and started to play it I couldn't put it down.
ah at least you put the boss theme (Danger) ! that's my favorite, it kicks ass! I've seen another top 20 Secret of Mana musics but Danger wasn't there ...
me and my mom played this game together...i was 11 she was 30...now im 30 and she has passed....we had an unforgetable bond with around 500hours into this game!
Christ. This brings me back. I spent months on this game, leveling up all the weapons and magic spells. Why can't they make games like these anymore!!
@JDawgBlu Months? You're not uber! We had all the FF games, Zelda, this, Chrono Trigger.... the RPG world was our oyster and we were min/maxing like mofos in the 90s. Doing it with 100 pots in our bags.
@Josh690315 Me too. This game is an example of what can happen when inspiration and talent are the primary focus in making a game, and not monetary profits.
Was it because I was so young or was it because of the games, or both? Hell I dont know, but it was magic. I would love to go rent a couple of games and pull all nighters like we used to.
SNES RPGS were mystical and sort-of bittersweet -- really, even at the time we played them they were mysteriousl/sad (now I consider them downright nostalgically depressing). Very Miyazaki in nature.
Games are made differently these days, a different vibe. Kids today will look back on the games they played with fond memories, not better or worse -- just we 90's chillens grew up in a certain vibe of game -- one that really induces nostalgia. Esp. SOM!
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Secret Of Mana. It’s up on my channel ORTmusic to check out and download!
Maybe it's because I'm not a kid anymore, but it's very rare when I connect to a character and storyline as much as I connected to this game. Secret of Mana and FFV1 (FFIII on SNES) are my two favorite JRPGs, and I would argue that Secret of Mana was attempting to stray from that role.
Absolutely amazing game, lot of good memories. I remember actually recording Thanatos' music on a dual tapedeck, haha.
@SailorBalance The bosses are bastards. It's all about casting a spell then jamming on the menu button so you can get another spell cast before the boss pummels you. It's a race to press the menu button constantly.
It sucks that the series ultimately died after SD 3. I haven't played Legend of Mana, but I hear it was crap, and World of Man was just as bad. Ah. RPGs will never be the same anymore.
I didn't like this game that much, I never finished it (i was blocked at the fire-tiger boss), but I fraky LOVE Into the thick of it... Normal if it's one of the bests songs of the game !
Any true RPG fan should be able to see that this game has loads of heart and quality in it, and whether the person likes or dislikes the actual game is another story - but the overall quality and passion cannot be debated.
