Hey, thanks for responding! I'm going back to work about 3 weeks after surgery, but I have a desk job. Still healing up. Aspercreme is helping with the uncomfortable numbness in my ribcage where I had the surgery.
Sky diving's on my to do list too, but I guess I have to wait a year!
I just had a spontaneous pneumothorax and had a bullae resected about a month ago and am recovering. My question to you is... Do you ever feel normal again after the surgery?
@panamante The answer is no. I occasionally have some discomfort in my chest. I think it is where they ruffed up my tissue in order to get my glue my lung back to my chest cavity. I cannot reach my left hand around the front of my body into my back right jeans pocket without agitating this area. The doctor told me no skydiving and no scuba diving because of the quick change in atmospheres - This rule i have not intention of following however!
I used to smoke badly, I'm skinny, do heavy works out and all that brought my pnuemothorax fate. I had a chest tube on July 05. The practitioner was a professional. He briefed the whole operation & done it in 10 min. I couldn't stand the length of the injection needle .:-O. Say, the pain was bearable. It happened again on Jan 06; it was terrible. Drs were just titles of Dr. After that, I had the surgery where part of the lung was removed. I have two stamp-like holes & a signature. :D
@bonibonyrrk It does not go directly into your lung. The tube goes in between your ribs and sits between the chest wall and the lung to suck out air and fluid. I've have 5 tubes in me from the same surgery and it always feels like I have a really bad bruise on my back and I can feel where the tube ends. I have never been able to feel where the tube comes into my body.
I had three chest tubes and a surgery. I was awake for the first tube on my left. it being put it just felt funny. as soon as the suction goes on though you learn a new definition of pain. my second tube on my left side after the surgery was very painful coming out but the right one didnt bother me much at all. my only regret about the tubes is the vicious bandage they put on after pulling a tube. that is torture.
OH dude! I had a lung surgery as well, and that tube was removed as well... the most painful part was when they had to remove my bandages! part of my skin came off with it... looking at this from another point of view is more painful lol awch!!! hope you're all good now, I've never had a problem afterwards. thnks for posting. cheers.
hospital for seven days. you looked so much better than i did at that stage! the whole thing was exceedingly painful and uncomfortable for me. at least the people at MGH did a good job
Daaam I've been through this last week but I didn't look once! Its weird to watch it now. My stitches will be removed next week. Weird how you said it didn't hurt that much, that effing tube hurted like hell all week for me. I was on morfine for a few days (after the operation, which was the most painfull thing I ever experienced) but after the morfine, I could barely sleep without extra medication. It was also spontaneous, I woke up and could barely breath. At least it made me quit smoking!
OMG, that chest rube removal looked just dreadful, as well as those bruises! Ouch. Those chest tubes hurt bad going in too. Hope the recovery was non-eventful and successful.
my doctor never told me to breath when he took my chest tube out.....one of the nurses had me to hold her hand....probably because she knows that it's going to be painful.
This was not painfull, it just felt strange/uncomfortable. I was on pain pills the whole time in the hospital (5 days), but the did not use a local. As far as I know they haven't discovered a disease or genetic trait that causes this, blisters in the lung that collapse forming holes, other than that it is more common in taller lankier individuals... i'm 5'11' 170lbs but whatever...
I did not smoke when I first started experiencing the spontaneous pnuemothorax. the surgery was indeed to remove the blisters, stapling the holes shut afterwords
I had my lower left lobe removed because of an abscess and I remember taking this tube out. That was a great feeling getting rid of that. What kind of surgery did you have?
thats exactly what i had with a tear in my lung as well, they had to go through my ribs etc, and when they yanked it out it felt like fire all over my body i screamed so loud. Because of the location of my chest tube it was in at an angle and hurt like a mother!! the pain level really depends on the position of it so everyone different
