There is this one other series that to me felt like it was a spoof of neon Genesis...or just a comedy rip off (not that there haven't been MANY other shows inspired or created due to the poularity of Evangelion, the show if I am thinking of the correct one is a spin off of the Tenchi series called "Dual Planet" ...but I would have to double check....I looked into the N64 game ...goes for between 64-99 bucks.....I may pick it up one day..along with a Japan N64...it just looked so good
wow that is one great looking N64 game!, and yes like you I would save my money to buy each of the VHS tapes..then later the DVDs..then after a big gap the two movies (well the rehased final episode, and the movie) Finally gave me an ending...granted I didn't fully understand it until years later when I think it was NewType explained some of it to me then it all fell into place....now I am into the recent movies that reimagine the story just a bit....
@medicwheat69 Yeah, the N64 game is really nice graphically, and it's pretty fun too, a lot better than the eva games on the saturn and ps1. Yeah, I think the movie made sense to me after seeing it a couple times, but initially upon seeing it, I was kind of in shock, lol. Thinking back to when I had first watched the first 6 episodes or so when the tone was a bit less insane, I could have never imagined how it would end up.
@CRTcade I remember the first VHS tape of the series was something I bought on my Senior year in Highschool during a band trip (marching band lol...TUBA!!!), and we (the other students) watched it on the bus, unfortantly it was on mini tvs and was before dubing but sub'd...so only a few of the students could read it....the action everyone loved.but then the second episode started and we saw some partiale nudity...the teachers scrambled to turn that off lol
@medicwheat69 Even though by about tape 7 the tone of the series seems to start gearing towards mental breakdown and anguish and you get the sense that impending doom is looming, the movie still really took me awhile to digest because I suppose I had hoped that things would turn out differently, but knowing Hideaki Anno's mind, I should have realized that there would be no happy resolution that I had hoped for.
@medicwheat69 to me, episode 26 is the polar opposite of EOE, but yet, if you think about both of them, they really are the same ending, just vastly different ways of portraying it. That feelings that Shinji has of being sequestered and undesired and as such, feeling that everyone else should die is extreme but I'm sure all ppl have felt it at some point. Just like in ep. 26, I guess though it is somewhat positive, as he decides to end the 3rd impact in the movie..
@medicwheat69 ..I guess he ultimately decides that his own life and the existences of others are worth saving, despite the pain that is involved in life and in humans interacting with each other and struggling but striving to understand each other, so the egg of lilith is broken and all souls return to earth. However, that last scene and line, "kimochi warui" is just not so uplifting and not what I wanted for the last piece of dialogue in the series, lol. sry for rambling here man
One of my all time favourite anime shows, like you i collected the vhs tapes but they were only released dubbed in the uk so got the dvd boxset later, have you seen rebuild of evangelion?
@Consoletronix Yeah, I saw a bit of the blu-ray rebuild that a friend had with some of the new footage. It really did look unbelievable in Blu-ray. I think only the first 6 or so episodes have been released so far, right?
@xBULLETxSPONGEx Cool. I bought these when I was 13 back in 1996, so at this point since they are over 15 years old, so they are starting to not play so well, so be careful if you buy VHS now. If you want to watch the Evangelion series, I'd recommend the DVD now, and I think they released Eva on blue ray too? I just dusted these off the other day, and put in 1 tape, but I'm surprised they were actually playing, lol, as they've been sitting in a box forever!
@xBULLETxSPONGEx The one thing I love about these tapes is that since I had them stored in a box for so many years, the VHS cases are still in fantastic shape, and even though they aren't worth that much anymore I'm guessing, I love the color and art on the boxes, they look awesome, and it brings back so many memories from my childhood!
The way you pronounce the names of the characters in this series makes me think that you actually speak Japanese as it really sounds pretty good the way you pronounce the Japanese.
Thanks for the kind words Mark! I lived in Japan for 4 years, so I would say my Japanese is pretty good. I also speak Spanish, but not nearly as well. Many of my ancestors came to the US from Spain many years ago, so learning Spanish is sort of a personal interest of mine, but I never seem to have enough time unfortunately.
good video - I'm a bit of a sucker for anime though. I remember watching NGE on Uk SciFi channel back in the day, although it was the dubbed version. Later bought the DVD set when it was released in Europe. I think the best thing about NGE for me, was reintroducing anime/manga to me, as it was a good few years previous I was hooked any Fist of the North Star/Akira etc and of course Manga Mania (comic)
Yeah, I have the dubs on VHS, when I bought them before DVD's, back in 1996-97, I was only 13 and had no money, so I went with the dubs because they were 5 dollars cheaper per tape. I didn't speak Japanese back then, but after living in Japan from 2003-2007, of course I do now, and still, looking back at the dubs, I really think they did a great job, because I don't think I would have been so attached to the characters otherwise.
@ondafly I watched them again online 3 years ago, this time in Japanese since I can understand it now, and it didn't have the same effect on me. I think the original Japanese voice actors did an absolutely fantastic job as well, but, perhaps my preference for the English dub rests in the fact that nostalgia is just an emotionally powerful force. Either way, I think both the Japanese and English versions are both stellar and should both be watched.
@amurphy245 Yeah, definitely check it out. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The series can be a bit of a downer and it does become progressively more strange towards the end, but I suppose I sort of naturally gravitate towards somewhat depressing stories, not really sure why.
