Slade are one of the greatest and most versatile rockband ever. Recordholders for the number of real tunes that mean something to people. Continuously evolving to different styles and genres. They influenced Kiss, Status Quo, Oasis, AC/DC, Queen, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, the Ramones etc. and an entire generation of heavy metal bands in the US in the early eighties. Went to South Bristol College in 1971. We booked a group from the Midlands for our Christmas Party. By the time of the party they had moved from obscurity to Number 1 with 'Coz I Love You'. Slade turned up and performed at our little College Party, how many groups today would do that. Never forgotten for that.
So many people in the 80's trashed the 70's and no idea why. they were great at Monsters of Rock and I just have to get my Slade fix now and then to blow the cobwebs out :)))
I'm a huge Beatles fan, but nobody missed the Beatles in the 70s, there were just too many greats bands going around, and SLADE were up there with the very best, maybe they were the best. But it doesn't really matter, they were an integral part of the best decade in pop/rock music. By the way, I'm a big Elvis fan, as they were, and Elvis also did a lot of good stuff in the early 70s.

@duncansunrise My brother is also a huge Beatles fan but he does not like to talk about Slade or listen to their albums (LOL). Ignorance is prejudice, if you don t listen to the real thing, you will never know....the truth is, that IMHO Slade are the best band after the Beatles, in diverseness, powertunes, as a live act etc. Completest package and sheerest versatility. They engineered an unique sound on their last 3 to 4 albums in the 80s, continuously evolving. Absulutely brilliant band.

Not that John´s voice would be that bad, a little too sweet to my tastes though.This song has a nice dark undertone to it that makes it sound like a traditional folk song. Something same as in Paint It Black by the Stones. Which is perfect too.

I agree, Slade had more to offer: stronger tunes with better beat rhythm, live act, a better and strongers singer as you have confirmed and probably more diverse if you consider their classical songs and the sophisticated stuff on their last 3 albums. O.K. Beatles were much more influential, but that has also to do with timing and the media attention they have had over the last 50 years. To me, Slade have the better sound and tunes.

@carlphone It's a hard thing to explain. Seemed like every time Slade came on a fight a broke out during the record. It certainly was'nt the band's fault so local gang culture is all I can put it down to. There were times when I would have preferred being safe at home playing with an Action Man myself as occasionally I forgot to duck. I should'nt have assumed everybody would understand the joking reference to those times I made though. Oh well, at least we agree on how good they were as a band.

@carlphone I don't trust my memory so much on dates these days, I think the first time was 1970. They were backed by Nazareth and went down a storm. There was no doubt they were going to be big, they were too good not to be. You are right their style did change as they developed, softer for want of a better word but I enjoyed that too. I went to a see a few of the glam rock bands during the height of their success and don't like to pick one over another but probably Slade and Mud were best live
@2001perseus Thank you for your insight. I also don t like to pick one above another, but I think Slade are a once in a generation band. Especially the 80s stuff is proof that they have evolved continuously during their careers. They rival the absolute greatest of great in this respect. The 3 last albums are simply magnificent, absolute highest calibre of songwriting and so different that their 70 s stuff that was already great. I will check some Mud (live) and Nazareth uploads here too, cheers!
@carlphone I think aged and creaky describes me better than insightful but thanks. I agree with you, Slade were outstanding and probably underated as musicians. Never once resorted to cover versions to my knowledge which underlines the strength of their creativity. Mud had less of an edge but were still great to see. I personally was'nt as keen on Nazareth though but they were also good musicians. Maybe I was spoiled by Noddy Holders great vocals? A great character Noddy, brilliant but modest.

Slade sold more records and had more top hits on the radio and charts than EVERY OTHER band from England except two - The Beatles (#1) and the Rolling Stones (#2). Went to South Bristol College in 1971. We booked a group from the Midlands for our Christmas Party. By the time of the party they had moved from obscurity to Number 1 with 'Coz I Love You'. Slade turned up and performed at our little College Party, how many groups today would do that. Never forgotten for that.

I'm a huge Beatles fan, but nobody missed the Beatles in the 70s, there were just too many greats bands going around, and SLADE were up there with the very best, maybe they were the best. But it doesn't really matter, they were an integral part of the best decade in pop/rock music. By the way, I'm a big Elvis fan, as they were, and Elvis also did a lot of good stuff in the early 70s.

Ignorance is prejudice, if you don t listen to the real thing, you will never know....the truth is, that IMHO Slade are the best band after the Beatles, in diverseness, powertunes, as a live act etc. Completest package and sheerest versatility. They engineered an unique sound on their last 3 to 4 albums in the 80s, continuously evolving. Absulutely brilliant band.

Not that John´s voice would be that bad, a little too sweet to my tastes though.This song has a nice dark undertone to it that makes it sound like a traditional folk song. Something same as in Paint It Black by the Stones. Which is perfect too.

I agree, Slade had more to offer: stronger tunes with better beat rhythm, live act, a better and strongers singer as you have confirmed and probably more diverse if you consider their classical songs and the sophisticated stuff on their last 3 albums. O.K. Beatles were much more influential, but that has also to do with timing and the media attention they have had over the last 50 years. To me, Slade have the better sound and tunes.

@carlphone It's a hard thing to explain. Seemed like every time Slade came on a fight a broke out during the record. It certainly was'nt the band's fault so local gang culture is all I can put it down to. There were times when I would have preferred being safe at home playing with an Action Man myself as occasionally I forgot to duck. I should'nt have assumed everybody would understand the joking reference to those times I made though. Oh well, at least we agree on how good they were as a band.

@carlphone I don't trust my memory so much on dates these days, I think the first time was 1970. They were backed by Nazareth and went down a storm. There was no doubt they were going to be big, they were too good not to be. You are right their style did change as they developed, softer for want of a better word but I enjoyed that too. I went to a see a few of the glam rock bands during the height of their success and don't like to pick one over another but probably Slade and Mud were best live

Especially the 80s stuff is proof that they have evolved continuously during their careers. They rival the absolute greatest of great in this respect. The 3 last albums are simply magnificent, absolute highest calibre of songwriting and so different that their 70 s stuff that was already great. I will check some Mud (live) and Nazareth uploads here too, cheers!

@carlphone I think aged and creaky describes me better than insightful but thanks. I agree with you, Slade were outstanding and probably underated as musicians. Never once resorted to cover versions to my knowledge which underlines the strength of their creativity. Mud had less of an edge but were still great to see. I personally was'nt as keen on Nazareth though but they were also good musicians. Maybe I was spoiled by Noddy Holders great vocals? A great character Noddy, brilliant but modest.

Slade sold more records and had more top hits on the radio and charts than EVERY OTHER band from England except two - The Beatles (#1) and the Rolling Stones (#2). It's amazing to me that some people (teddingtonfool) still think they weren't a good band. To quote someone below here "ITS NOT QUANTITY YOU ARSE HOLE ITS QUALITY.
