It has the worst Government in the world! They can't organise or do anything properly. The public transport is crap or non-existant. And there is absolutely NOTHING to do if you aged between 12 and 18. This video makes it out to be a cool place....really it's not....
I love the Isle of Man. We do a damn good job and even though we pay less taxes somehow our government manages to survive pretty darn well. People generalise so much about the isle of man, but we are so much more than finance we work hard and it would be nice if people would leave us alone and leave their bitterness somewhere else.
@shootforhoops Totally agree! Isle of Man reveals an optimal mix any (average!) European could just dream 'bout - wonderful landscape, the sea, English language, mild and refreshing climate, rich culture, good ecology, strong community feeling and.... high standard of living! D
@shootforhoops its not rocket science as to how the IoM makes money to ensure that taxes are low. Generating tax by allowing companies to pay less tax than they would in their normal operating countries despite having little or no relevance to that companies operations otherwise (taking tax from other countries) and also enabling people to pay less tax through offshore investments and companies. The VAT shares been partly reduced and will be looked at again and reduced further shortly.
I tried to change some Manx notes to Euros at a bank in Douglas last August, and the assistant told me I couldn't because I wasn;t a Manx resident (and therefore didn;t have a Manx bank account). I was most annoyed and if I was bitter and twisted I'd say it was because I'm from London!
Why did you not go to a travel agent?? A bank will refuse me to change notes at their branch if I dont have an account there...and I am from the Isle of Man.
You should have gone to a travel agent. A bank wont let me change currency if I do not have an account with them....Even to change from Manx to British...And I am from the Isle of Man.
I was a 'comeover' in the early eighties (was cabin crew on the first ever Manx Airlines flight to Heathrow from Douglas). Now, as a doctor, I'd love to go back as that island has the most fantastic opportunities and is still the most welcoming place in which I've ever spent any amount of time. You will find this too, no doubt. Make sure, however, that you say hello to the fairies on your way accross a particular bridge into Douglas (you'll know it when you encounter it): you'd be silly not to!

You sound a bit ignorant and bitter, Dave. Kaupthing fucked you over, did they? Blame the UK government, the IOM had nothing to do with it. The UK froze manx money to protect UK citizens.
FactualTruthProvider, you should get your facts straight before commenting. The Manx FSC authorised the transfer of more than half of KSFIOM's liquid assets UNSECURED to the UK. The IOM therefore had a great deal to do with this situation - without their incompetence depositors would not be in the mess that they have now been in for nearly a year. The Manx Government has failed to accept responsibility.
Freedom to flourish? A secure environment? Not if you place your savings in a bank there - ask any KSFIOM depositor. Many will be waiting for more than seven years and be lucky if they get back 75% of their money.
I'm sure you're correct. It's just a shame that it's so dependent on it's finance industry. And the government bends over backwards to accomodate them. Funny as it's so perfect it had the worst bank failure in Europe!

I'm an Aussie boy from Sydney two generations back but my family are from the Isle of Man before that. I thought it would be a nice place to visit and see where I come from but all the comments on here have made it sound like a total dump. We get alot of heat and sunshine here so I wanted to see the grey skies and rolling green hills. Maybe I should just do Ireland or Scotland??
Hi joshau21, please don't think the comments below represent the majority on people on the island, I hope you would receive a warm welcome, and enjoy discovering your roots! We can't promise sunshine, but green hills are a given. May is often the best month for weather. Hope you make it some day.
It isn't a total dump. Not to be patronising but it is a small island with a population of about 80,000, so it won't be as happening as London or Dublin or places like that, nor will it have the array of attractions that you would find on the mainland. But it has some lovely scenery (Calf Sound is beautiful) and a unique character, and as a Posh Londoner I was made to feel very welcome. So go for it!
Hello man, just wanted to say that I visited the Isle of Man for Tynwald Day in 2006, and what a lovely and enchanted trip that was. I highly recommend staying in either Douglas or Peel.
Both of those cities are both beautiful in scenery and culture. From St Patrick's Isle, to the midway point of St Johns Hill at Tynwald, to the promenade of Douglas...it is a great place to visit for a week. I also highly recommend visiting during Tynwald, that is so important.
The Isle of Man is such a dump, unless you were born there. The people are incredibly xenophobic towards the English (they call us 'comeovers'), there are huge areas of absolute poverty (which breed some of the most vicious chavs I have ever encountered in the British Isles) and there is nothing to do for young people or families. Having said that, it is a great place to set up a business, as the financial and other incentives are very generous.
Take your rose tinted glasses off - where are your "FACTS"? House prices are higher (not twice the price) because there's little supply. Consider that the house prices on the island have barely dropped on the island and that most houses going on sale are remaining unsold for a long time. Perhaps the estate agents are just waiting to see if they can take a bigger cut if things pick up but theres slow movement. And if you can't see poverty on the island, you must be blind
'The people are incredibly xenophobic towards the English (they call us 'comeovers'), '
Firstly it's not xenophobia, it's just a word, they could use the word 'foreigner', would that be better? I think that would be MORE offensive, don't you?
Secondly it's not towards the english specifically, it's to any non-manx person, and I have NEVER heard it used as an insult. Perhaps you were just being a cock, or offended your manx hosts by being a pompous insulting british cock?
If you're English visiting, then as long as your giving them money then people are happy. Move to the island to live (even with a manx partner) not so polite day to day.
Feel free to move to england though to get your higher education etc, have manx societies and be treated the same as locals, even when you do rant on ALL the time about the fictitious ideas of your little island thats seemingly made of gold. We promise not to compare to the superior Jersey, oh, and no work permit required
i would say that if you lived in... well, let's say my town, Oslo, the capital of Norway, it's a lot to do, it's a nice and big city... Still practically every single teenager says it BORING! Even though there's a lot of facilities for them to use! So, I'd bet you would say the same shit if you were born here! Be happy that you weren't born in Iraq or something like that! Cherish your own country and enjoy a quiet life without guns, bombs and death that lingers around every corner! more to come!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I might think that you think that it sound much "cooler" to live with guns and that.. Believe me, you would shit your pants even before you would see a gun! Believe me, you do NOT want to be near guns... My father was a EU solider... WAS! And it doesn't pass a day were I don't think of those who killed him! So cherish your country, be proud of it! You make your life as you self want it to be!
The fact it needs a slogan and cheesy video like this shows how weak we actually are. Unrivalled quality of life? Yes if you want sweet FA to do and to spend all and above your tax savings travelling to the UK to do something. Despite whats said, its feels like another county of england but with much less to do - for this reason alone, the quality of life is lower than similar size villages in england. 1% of a film gets made here and suddenly its a manx film. So many places rundown - its a dump
The Isle of Man seems like heaven, and in the near future, I may choose to live in "Ellan Vannin". I've had about two or three relatives from Italy who live there, and they always describe to me how excellent the great island is, especially for their finances! They were going to move to England, but they had seen an advertisement for the island while in a travel agent's office, and they've lived their for about 30 years now. They always tell me how it resembles Italy - except WAY better!
Just curious, I am US born, my father was born in England, so is it possible to reside on the island if I want to open a restaurant. Anyone can provide me with information? Also are there any small farms for sale? I live in Argentina and love agriculture and would like to breed goats for milk and cheese on the island. Any advice given I would appreciate. Thanx to the Manx.
rite i live inda IOM freedom 2 fourish stuff is all bullshit but da government r goons they just cancelled the peel bay festival for 2008 they dont give a damn bout the manx ppl and manx language 1 in 10 at the most speak it but there is about 3 of 4 that speak english and people dont even get that far so if ya considering livin here just dont it may b cheaper it may b small and quiet with a low crime rate but the government ruin the island of anything good that might happen for us normal people
jeeeeez if you're so pi**ed off why don't you go live somewhere else?.. "may b cheaper" what are you on about? Everything is more expensive than the UK lol, I don't understand what you mean by that,by necessity,an island would be a more expensive place to live. You just don't realise the quality of life you get there.Stop whining & go & have a look at some countries that are actually suffering and in trouble, u don't realise what luxury u live in compared 2the majority of the world's population!
Thought that was a great video, especially to see my ex-boss in it (from AXA) - recognised a few faces - still miss the island now and again, even though I live in the country in Ireland, but love it here
The Island general attitudes to homosexuality are not as liberal as they generally are in the UK. I tend Attitudes are more conservative on the whole.
Hey there, I visited the IOM in August and I loved it! Only regret is I only had 5 days there and had to cram vistis to 2-3 towns in, therefore not having enough time to see them properly.
OH WHO CALLED US BRITISH!...just cause we have british passports don't make us british...I am full Manx...Darn Proud!...rather be Manx than British...also this video goes slighlty over the top...i agree...can i say i take it that was Anna Goldsmith singing...very good...but do have a remix of me please god no
we are British you idiot!! Britain encommpasses all the *British Isles*. We are not English however, or part of the United Kingdom or EU either. Get it right before you go on tellin people we're not based in the Irish Sea either!! lol!
I grew up on The Isle Of Man I left to work on The Main Land & have since traveled The World I have never found any where that can come close. I think of my time in Ramsey with all the people who were kind to me keepet me safe & gave me love & suport, The sweet Manx Girls who took away my inrecents. Fourty years on I am Looking forward to Coming Home & Having a Rest ! Im coming back in September! If any one wants a Good But worn Out Old Chef Who has lots of tails to tell , Let Me Know
IOM is a lovely island and the people are fantastic. I spent about 5 days there and it was wonderful. Like any island you can get island fever but it is an incredibly charming place.
This video though a tiny bit over the top has many truths to it, and the young people who complain have not a clue about the special thing they've got. Education and Health is High. Tax is very low. The countryside is fantastic, with many sporting opportunitys and other clubs offering Kayaking, Windsurfing, Cycling, Walking, Sailing.
Sure the island is not perfect but is much better than most places in the United Kingdom. If you don't like it there is a boat in the morning.
the manx people are celts they have more in common with the scotts and the irish. most people on the island are manx and are pround of thier manx and celtic culture
i'm from the IOM:) and i enjoy racing round the islands roads cus of no speed limit in my porche!!:) thats all the IOM is good for, no fit girls... (isle of 'Man') :( lol xD
Yes, but as a nation we are british, dont be ashamed to be so, dont let others make you fell ashamed, British is a proud name to keep close to yer heart. AS A NATION WE ARE BRITISH! wheither scottish, english, welsh, manx, irish, we are British! British Isles.
It might take certain teenagers a while to realise how good the Isle Of Man is for things like starting a family and setting up companies. Im 20 and at Uni and already I can see how special the Island is you can call it a rock but its a bloody good rock and im proud of it!
in what way is it good ? i lived there for 4 years & i found it incredibly dull. There is little to do except drink, the people racist narrow-minded deadheads and is one the most corrupt places in the western world.
I can understand the younger generation feeling a touch stifled, however, come and live in the UK. The liberal politically correct attitude in the UK are allowing those with no morals, sense of civic duty and price or respect to absolutely run riot and destroy the fabric of society. Our prisons are full so what do our Government do? Build new ones I hear you say? NO, they tell the judges not to send anyone to prison! Would I trade the IOM for the negative aspects of the UK? In a heartbeat.
would i trade an isle of man town or village for a similar size town or village in England, without doubt. Would i trade it for some inner city area no. The UK has much more going for it than the island ever will, theres no two ways about it
You wouldn't get me living back on that rock for all the money in the world. It may have a low crime rate but the young people are missing out on so much and career options are very very limited. Its all about who you know, especially if you want planning permission, BASTARDS.
PLEASE SEE THE DIFFICULTIES THAT I AM HAVING WITH THE IOM LEGAL SYSTEM. LANDLORDS AND AGENTS FLOURISH, TENANTS RIGHTS ARE RUN ROUGHSOD OVER, IT IS SO REGRETTABLE THAT i HAVE TO TAKE THE STEPS I HAVE...WOOOF! XXX
The video is a bit cheesy, but having traveled a lot I so far I haven't found anywhere I would prefer to live. Only problem with the place is the shockingly bad public transport. People who say there is nothing to do here have obviously not been outside of the towns.
I don't disbelieve you, but I went to IOM this August (thats why I was looking for videos here :)), and I found the public transport very good. Buses always on time and network quite comprehensive.
the isle of man is over populated the infrastructure cant cope! what bad propaganda to try and bring people here.! theres nothing for the youth its all been demolitioned and turned into apartments for the office people to live in!
I think they've done a decent job in promoting the island. For a population of 80,000 or so, there's only a small portion of that (1.4%) unemployed. The IOM is very small and has a low crime rate (upped by UK opportunists) and the housing is in comparison with other UK areas. At the end of the day, if people aren't happy with the Manx way of life, then find somewhere where they can and let us know where you went.
Anyone else notice that all the successful 'Manx' people are actually South African or something? The nation is so lazy, they need to import people who actually do some work. (Huge generalisation I know, but with grains of truth)
The Isle of Man isn't bad by any means, but this video is waay out of proportion. I get the feeling sometimes the Isle of Man government is a bit full of itself and not really in touch with anything. And a lot of thi is made up too. We don't have our own language... it died like a hundred years ago and they're trying to bring it back to make themselves look cool. I can understand learning Latin... but Manx? WTF? Learn Welsh or something.
The Isle of Man is legendary, in and out of hospitals in hours unlike the UKs days (I will grant you the dentist issues though), brilliant subsidised sports facilities, great public transport, virtually no crime and way above UK average wages.
Only when you have travelled can you truly appreciate the haven that the island is.
and way above UK average wages - don't let a few top earners scew the figures. The wages here are lower. The standard of employees is much lower also. A job that requires a set of decent a-levels in the UK requires a couple of GCSE's (in any subject).
Virtually no crime is bull these days too. Take your red shaded glasses off for a while. Your only defensive because deep down you knwo where you live is actually pretty $hit
the land of being ripped of from the moment you book your ferry fare to house prices, food prices ,petrol prices unless you are very welthey you cannot get any where over here!
The Isle of Man is a beautiful, safe, properous place to live - unfortunately there are always some who have not as yet experienced what the UK has to offer so perhaps they might be forgiven for not appreciating what a jewel we have. For those of us who have travelled - I can assure you the Island is the best place to come home to!

'there are huge areas of absolute poverty' - the island has a lower poverty index than any region of the UK, I can't think of one area in poverty.
'there is nothing to do for young people or families' then why the hell was it the centre of the british tourist industry for half a century?
All these FACTS clearly contradict your statements. Care to comment?

Probably the latter.

HenningChristensen93 3 years ago 4

A new verse for this song suggested by my 7 year old cousin, after I told her about my viit there:
'I hear the Manx cats mewing/At the Mann cat Sanctuary/and the soil of Ellan Vannin/is where the Manc cats poo and wee'.

Most of population were born in British Isles. 37.2% born in England, so there is no reason to complain about discrimination.

jeeeeez if you're so pi**ed off why don't you go live somewhere else?..

I have to say though i was surprised that homosexuality was only legalised in 1992 on IOM!
SciFiGeekinArmani 4 years ago
The Island general attitudes to homosexuality are not as liberal as they generally are in the UK. I tend Attitudes are more conservative on the whole.

Hey there, I visited the IOM in August and I loved it! Only regret is I only had 5 days there and had to cram vistis to 2-3 towns in, therefore not having enough time to see them properly.
SciFiGeekinArmani 4 years ago
Why do most of those speaking have Liverpool accents ? Because most ofthem come from 'across' bringing their talent.
mobydog197 4 years ago
Firstly, there seems to be a variety of accents in this video, in fact I didn't hear a Liverpudlian accent in it.
Secondly that is the point you fool, to attract business' as that is the main source of income.

IOM is a lovely island and the people are fantastic. I spent about 5 days there and it was wonderful. Like any island you can get island fever but it is an incredibly charming place.
Franzko787 4 years ago
This video though a tiny bit over the top has many truths to it, and the young people who complain have not a clue about the special thing they've got. Education and Health is High. Tax is very low. The countryside is fantastic, with many sporting opportunitys and other clubs offering Kayaking, Windsurfing, Cycling, Walking, Sailing.
Sure the island is not perfect but is much better than most places in the United Kingdom. If you don't like it there is a boat in the morning.

It might take certain teenagers a while to realise how good the Isle Of Man is for things like starting a family and setting up companies. Im 20 and at Uni and already I can see how special the Island is you can call it a rock but its a bloody good rock and im proud of it!
Dawsey87 4 years ago 2
in what way is it good ? i lived there for 4 years & i found it incredibly dull.

Elisale 4 years ago 3
would i trade an isle of man town or village for a similar size town or village in England, without doubt.

The video is a bit cheesy, but having traveled a lot I so far I haven't found anywhere I would prefer to live. Only problem with the place is the shockingly bad public transport. People who say there is nothing to do here have obviously not been outside of the towns.
Ace song whish I knew who its by.
matthewdolman 4 years ago 2
I don't disbelieve you, but I went to IOM this August (thats why I was looking for videos here :)), and I found the public transport very good. Buses always on time and network quite comprehensive.

why is it "freedom to flourish" when all the young people want to move away !
tirren23 4 years ago
the isle of man is over populated the infrastructure cant cope! what bad propaganda to try and bring people here.! theres nothing for the youth its all been demolitioned and turned into apartments for the office people to live in!

I feel sick. This is not the Isle of Man I know. This is misleading selfserving propaganda and nothing more.
shamraig 5 years ago
I think they've done a decent job in promoting the island. For a population of 80,000 or so, there's only a small portion of that (1.4%) unemployed. The IOM is very small and has a low crime rate (upped by UK opportunists) and the housing is in comparison with other UK areas. At the end of the day, if people aren't happy with the Manx way of life, then find somewhere where they can and let us know where you went.
manxy007 5 years ago 3
Anyone else notice that all the successful 'Manx' people are actually South African or something? The nation is so lazy, they need to import people who actually do some work. (Huge generalisation I know, but with grains of truth)
davidwildman123 5 years ago
The Isle of Man isn't bad by any means, but this video is waay out of proportion. I get the feeling sometimes the Isle of Man government is a bit full of itself and not really in touch with anything. And a lot of thi is made up too. We don't have our own language... it died like a hundred years ago and they're trying to bring it back to make themselves look cool. I can understand learning Latin... but Manx? WTF? Learn Welsh or something.
davidwildman123 5 years ago
i live in isle of man and that video makes me cringe and makes it come of worse than it is lol

The Isle of Man is legendary, in and out of hospitals in hours unlike the UKs days (I will grant you the dentist issues though), brilliant subsidised sports facilities, great public transport, virtually no crime and way above UK average wages.
Only when you have travelled can you truly appreciate the haven that the island is.
sebcity 5 years ago
and way above UK average wages - don't let a few top earners scew the figures.

Only my opinion!
