Sorry, Newt, but he IS the moderator; from what I can tell about these debates, the moderator is supposed to ask you questions, and you are supposed to answer.

Just because some questions are those that you didn't prepare for, or questions that you have to think about before you speak, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be asked. Actually, if you can answer the gotcha questions smartly with a "gotcha" statement of your own, that should raise people's opinion of you, right?

Newt gave them advice that led investors to believe it was smart to invest in them only to later find out they understated subprime mortages (fraud). That in turn caused the housing bubble to collapse which was one cause of the financial collapse. Look into it...

His primary model was based on trying to help people be able to buy and own home they could afford, not homes they COULDN'T afford. Freddie Mac never listened. Newt had no influence in the decisions that were made at the top. His economic outlook planning was virtually ignored. If they had listened to alot of his advice, they would not be in as bad a shape as they are

To tell me he gave them advice (worth 1.6 mill) to balance their budget is ludicrous. The Fed knows that, but they'll maintain the stance that it's backed by treasury bonds (debt).

They have refused to reregulate the system after the deregulation back in the late 90's, which was initiated by the right, supported by the left, and signed by Bill Clinton. They recently indicated they may need further federal assistance (money) to maintain solvency. This is rediculous, and Newt is right...they need to be broken up into at least 4-5 different companies, of which some may need to go away.

Generally moderators try to not "be the story," both in their questions and their demeanor at the debate. I was not extraordinarily surprised that Wallace asked Gingrich this question, but the fact that after Newt responded he offered his own little defense and engaged in a little discussion with Gingrich is just ridiculous and unprofessional.
