So weird Wild Bill Irwin never made it to the big time.He was an awesome talent, had a good look and he made matches interesting.Too bad I always wished he won a title some where either WCCW or NWA to get attention.
One of the things I like about The matches featuring the Road Warriors in the AWA is that you know that at one point in the match Rod Trongard will make a mistake and will call Animal "Hawk" and Hawk "Animal". hahaha
The best days of wrestling. The AWA, NWA and WWF were all stacked with talent. Not to mention Mid-South (an early version of ECW) and World Class. Then Mcmahon got greedy and wanted it all for himself. Well he got it all in 2001 and ruined the wrestling business forever.
Making This match was the right way to go but verne always let stuff like this just fade and slip through his fingers. Two brawling tag teams like this could have been built into a helluva knock down drag out fued.
I was working at the hospital that Scott was receiving treatment for his cancer, he was a very cool dude. I wish I would have known him before this. What makes this more traumatic for me is that my father received cancer treatment at the same hospital a year and a half earlier. RIP
The Long Riders & the LOD match up really well. The Irwins were on of the few times that was really very physically credible against the Warriors during their AWA tag title run.
The Warriors' AWA world tag team reign were kind of like Flair's NWA title reigns of the early 80's. They'd fight any team anywhere. Tennesse, Portland, Japan, Minnesota it didn't matter. Verne sure know how to let top talent go.
@ia74me The Road Warriors were such a draw that they were a special attraction, like Andre The Giant. Even when they were AWA tag champs, they would still appear in NWA territories.
Verne Gagne had two problems as a promoter: 1) he was a tightwad with money, and 2) he refused to change with the times. He thought "sports entertainment" would just be a passing fad. He was wrong, very wrong.
@TheJohnnyCotts i grew up in AWA territory and loved it when the Road Warriors came to the AWA, and your right about them as a special attraction. Also agree with you about Verne. i was never big on the " sports entertainment" thing but I wish he could have just gone with the flow of things
These were the days! The only reason I ever watch Wrestling when I was little was because of the warriors. I saw them the first time I ever saw a live match it was Christmas 84 in St, Paul Minnesota! That was the greatest night ever! Back in the day! Them was the days. What a show that was that they put n that night just like this one against the Irwin's! The Irwin's were a great tag team. But the hogg Irwin died of brain cancer not long after this match on here. Maybe 2 years later.
does anyone have the clip where the Long Riders broke Baron Von Raschke's hand or the tag team match between The Road Warriors against the Barbarian & Boris Zuhkov of the Sheik's Army by chance
I usually enjoy Rod Trongard, but I wish he would stop using definite articles in front of ring-names. "The Hawk," "The Animal," Scott "The Hog" Irwin, etc. I don't believe any of them preferred the 'the'.
Yeah, sometimes it is hard to tell if Trongard is saying "The Hog" or "The Hawk". Not to mention the fact that Rod keeps mixing up Hawk & Animal so it gets confusing.
@DVROFFMAN He made mistakes but he had such a perfect voice which had such a pro sports feel which is what is completely missing today... Although in defense of the announcers of today look at all the crap that they have to call.
Indeed it is, Volume 5, The Road Warriors, The Hawk and The Animal. So don't blame the announcers for calling them "The" Hawk and "The" Animal, that's the way the AWA promoted them.
i remember this match well those 2 teams really didnt like each other they beat the living crap out of each other everytime. i know they fought once prior to this in st. cloud arena and the other time at the tropicana in AC in early 1985. i think it was the 1st main event that AWA aired on ESPN i hope u have those matches
Boy it's confusing when Hawk and Scott are the legal men and Rod Trongard says something like "The Hawk with a chop to the Hog"

@Lfdjake91 Hate to say it but Rod was one of the worst announcers ever. But he had that 70's sound to him which was kind of nice to hear.
