@BabbelAmelCamel Right. The people of Gondor called numenorianslived on a island called Numenor which was close to Middle Earth or Arda, however Sauron the deceiver tricked them into attacking the Valar and the Elves, in the following war the whole island sank and many of it's people died, but there were many others who did not follow Sauron and were spared by the Gods, they were led by Elendil and where given land in Middle Earth - Gondor.
@sumvideos100 Outnumbered, demoralized and inexperienced. All the good soldiers were killed off. Bad leadership by a heart broken, power hungry steward. I'm not surprised.

amidst all ur intense comments. im totally shocked learning that Ian Mckellen while David Wenham is more handsome as Faramir. I thought he was good looking.
The reason why the army of Gondor in Minas Tirith seemed to be so bad is because the Gondorian's were in military strategy a rampage. Only if their leader was strong enough, such as Elendil, They'd be magnificently strong, Gondor grew weak, remember that, but that's because Denethor, the steward of the Citadel, his reign was weak, which is why it was a good moment for Sauron to strike Gondor. Technically yes, Gondor should be stronger than what you've seen in the movie.
why dont we start building Minas Tirth in the mountains and in 15 years boom big and youll see it with your own eye's the worlds biggest project ever!!! who agrees for gondor!!!!
@james65508 The soldiers of Numenor were also much stronger than their Gondorian counterparts , except in the Second Age and Fourth Ages , but during the Third Age the Gondorian soldiers only possessed 1/4 of the strength of the Numenoreans .

The elves didnt do too well because those were the Silvian(wood)elves , if the Noldor elves were there the Uruk hai would have been killed.Gondor got owned because many of their troops werent fully trained while the Morannon orcs were all Heavy infantry and had months to years of training .Hope it helped.
Thanks i guess i have to go back to the books and keep studying! on the open field the rohirrim could take on just about anything but holed up in helms deep they did not fair well. one thing about gondorian soldiers is that they had way more armor then the average rohirrim soldier chainmail vs chainmail and plate armor. you would think that they would have a much better chance but the orc is mostly superior in close combat. one force that does not get enough credit is are the rangers of ithilien
@Danie9989 Well the Gondorian soldier's armour in the War of the Ring was just a thin layer sheet of steel , it may look tough but its actually not.The Ithilien rangers are strong because they were cousins to the Dunaidan rangers and have more Numenorean blood then the regular Gondor troops. The orcs are superior in close combat because they use barbaric tactics and Gondorins use imperial tactics . Barbaric gives the orcs more ways to fight but imperial lessensGondor's troops of fighting.
@MultiKillerBot i totally agree with you that in the close quarters of osgiliath the barbaric orc is much superior against well disciplined gondorian soldiers in the thick of battle and especially the rangers of ithilien who are much more suited to ambushing and attacking at a range.
it surprises to me that its just a thin layer of steel i guess that why during the invasion of western osgiliath the orc archer was able to penetrate the soldiers armor although it was at a fairly close range.
@Danie9989 Well its not that they are weak its that they are against impossible odds.At helms deep it was 10,000 Uruk Hai vs like 250 wood elves and 250 Rohans. At Minas Tirith it was 200,000 orcs +many creatures and Mannish allies vs 2300 Gondor troops. Note in the movie Gondor Does Not get the 2700 reinforcements from its provinces(ex.Knights of Dol Amroth, archers of Morthond Vale.)unlike in the book. These odds would surely make their morale drop alot making it very easy for the orcs to kill.
part 1 In minas tirith each level is 100 feet higher than the next so in a siege if the firstlevel is taken the orcs attempting to go to the next gate will get showered by arrows everytime that they were visible so the capture of the city could only be done with massive losses for the attacker because
part 2 every time they would try to break down a gate they would be exposed and firing at the second level with bows is usles because the arrow would of lost so much force by the time it hit an armored archer which was very unlikley because they had so much cover to fire from
@Danie9989Part 1. I agree that the Gondorian archers didnt really take any casualities from orc archers because they had alot of cover from the top of the walls. However if you look at Minas Tirith when the Nazgul are descending upon it you can see that most of Minas Tirith's troops were positioned on the 1st level of the city. The ones on the 7th evel were members of the Citadel guards and were used for counterattacks only.
@Danie9989 Part 2.Also if you looked carefully when the orcs were breaching Minas Tirith's gate the archers are firing down upon them but theres just too many and only the archers on the first level are firing because like I said most of the troops were on the first level and when the gate was breached they were retreating so its very hard to set up archers on all the levels when the enemy is right behind you. They had trolls remember ? So it wasnt that hard to break the gates.
faramir is also my favorite character. it seems strange. other people would go for aragorn, or legolas, or gandalf.. or frodo... but i LOVE faramir, and sam too.
@nutbustedhaji He is mine fav character too. :) I like him in the books, sometimes I just read only the scenes where he is, hehe... And I like very much how David Wenham has portrayed him. :)
I don't like how in the movies Peter made Gondor look extremely weak. I mean, Gondor was meant to be strong, prosperous, and just really nice overall. He made the city great, but the troops were fleeing and confused when he should've showed them as strong, brave men who fought for their city...just my opinion.
yeah I didnt really like that either. After watching helms deep where the elves and soldiers of rohan fought bravely it was kind of a change of scenery to see some soldiers fleeing. However I think it was sort of made up for after gondor attacks back with the trebuchets and fights the orcs and attack trolls that break through the gate.
he was being realistic. if u want fantasy men not scared of thousands of troops and certain death watch 300. this is lotr, he wanted to show what really would happen in battle. there was 600 orcs to one man, in real life this battle wouldve lasted about 6 hours.
I don't agree to that at all. 300 is nothing like this at all, so why reference this to them. Plus 300 was not fantasy men. They were real. Also on a side note, Rohan was outnumbered as well, but they stood their ground and fought. They did not flee, so...my point exactly is he messed up.
I personally liked the despair shown in Gondor's lines which was due to the fact that they were overwhelmed and had no leader. Once Gandalf took leadership they started fighting back though I can't remember if that development is true to the book ...
Not strong or proseperous perhaps compared to its glory days. But I definetly agree that PJ made the soldiers look really silly... The orcs tend to win battles one on one vs Gondorians (like at Osgiliath) which is beyond ridiculous.
@ObikweluFan Well orcs are much more powerful than regular humans , only Numenoreans were more powerful then them , during the third age Gondor's army deteriorated from the Numenoreans class to regular humans so they wouldnt be able to fight well anyway.
The Lord of the Rings Book five chapter 4 The Siege of Gondor. "But soon there were few left in Minas Tirith who had the heart to stand up and defy the hosts of Mordor,. For yet another weapon, swifter than hunger, the Lord of the Dark Tower had: dread and despair... ...At length even the stout-hearted would fling themselves to the ground as the hidden menaced passed over them, or they would stand letting their weapons fall from nerveless hands..."
I can't say I agree with you. I've read the books and scene the movies. The books are better, however you can't put everything the books had into a movie like this. It would be way to long. I mean Saruman doesn't die in Isangard on Orthanc. That happens in the Shire. When Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry return from the celebrations in Gondor finding them waiting for them.Or in the Two Towers Helms Deep. Elves don't come the dark forest does. So the book and movie are different you can't compare.
@wildgirl142 I'm not saying he didn't I'm just saying I love them both but there not the same considering that they were filmed out of sequence meaning the films.
@delvo71 I'm going to have to disagree with you. He makes them powerful at times. They're at least brave when they're defending Osgiliath. And remember, the presence of all nine Nazgul during the battle probably put an extra element of fear into their hearts.
also, they were up against a force of 200,000 orcs. I think anyone would wet their pants at just the thought of having to confront that kind of army.
@togio100 yeah i agree with you Gondor only had 10,000 vs 200,000 plus the 1,000easterlings and 1,000 haradrim , 100 trolls and wargs 20 catapults and siege towers and all nine nazgul at least the spearmen and archers did alot damage but the swordsman werent that good though what do you think??
@MultiKillerBot I wasn't really noticing whether the swordsmen were up to snuff or not. I was watching all the other bajillion awesome things going on in that battle.
Seriously, I never noticed. ANd I don't think they did that badly for a crowd of extras and stuntmen.
at the end of the day, ROTK still has the best battles scenes in any modern film (sorry Two Towers and Avatar), so I suppose it doesn't matter if certain details are out of whack
Too bad that for many decades the city's been corrupted (or at least the Stewart's mind has been) by Sauron, so the morale has significantly dropped. Soldiers were also running amok when it was besieged because of Denethor's fear itself, until Gandalf took charge of everything. That actually is a big part of the third book, because if the city was to be as strong as it was many years before, there wouldn't be much significance to the return of the king.
@delvo71 yep basicly he had an point cause the king i mean the throne keeper was like IM SO SMART U ALL ARE RETARDS HAHAHA GO F YOURSELVES ROHAN AND GANDALF HAHA i think thats cause gondor was going to fall the throne keeper stewart or whatever he was didnt think that orcs are going to attack he was like I WANT THE RING he was kinda possesed or sth like boromir was at beginning he was like GIMME THA RING RETARD HOBBIT and thats why he died it is year weak put has a point there
@delvo71 In the books they did flee, it states during the seige that only the men from Dol Amroth were brave enough to stand and defend the first lvl, the rest ran to the 2nd. However, PJ did show that, in the books, the men that ran also regrouped and even pushed the orcs out of the city and fought on the Pelennor with the Rohirrim in a pitched battle, something I think he should have shown.
@Tripyourift2 mmm P.J doubled the size of the enemy army , plus he started the siege way too early in the books it starts at midnight , in the movies 6 hours earlier .Also In the book Gondor had 7,000 men in the movie P.J didnt show the reinforcements so they only had about 5,000 . Also in the book the orcs never made it into the city so the gondor armies didnt have to drive them out .
@Tripyourift2 In the books not only the knight of Amroth stood there ground a few others did as well , Also because P.J started the siege 6 hours earlier the orcs had plenty of time to move into the city . I still think Gondor did fine in the movie considering they only had 5,000 in the movie .
Peter clearly wanted to show how the city had begun to slowly deteriorate over time without a proper King. The Stewart of Gondor was not much of a leader at all and he definitely wasn't the type to inspire his people with a speech and make them all prideful and full of hope. He was a very loathing bitter old man that did not take the city and its people's best interest at heart. I think Peter captured that terrifically.
@delvo71 the book describes gondor as a fading kingdom. Middle-Earth is at its dark times, that's why Minas Tirith is this way. It shows all the sadness and nostalgia for the shining years of the old Kings.
@delvo71 agree. Although I don't feel Gondor at that point and time was really that strong, but Mina Tirith is a city more fortified than helm's deep. It baffles me when some catapult hurl some rock and breach the city walls.
@delvo71 i do see what you're saying, but if he made them COMPLETELY fearless and aggressive, it would have sort of ruined the whole idea that there is a question presented throughout the trilogy about whether men are too weak and selfish to save middle earth that is only answered at the end of the story.
@delvo71 he tried to follow what tolkien had written in the book, and minas tirith itself was... weak and i quote from the book "yet in truth falling year by year into decay; and already lacked half the men that could have dwelt at ease there"... and bout the troops fleeing "but the faithful who remained there at their posts were few; most had fled beyond the second gate"
@delvo71 The city and its inhabitants reflect the downfall of numenorian culture aswell as the white tree from Numenor until Aragorn claims the throne for the Numenor Kings again. And btw. the soldiers are as brave as they could possibly be facing a ten times larger army than their own. In this case the courage of the men is the only thing that remained unshaken, reasonably they are frightened though.
@delvo71 but wasn't it that those people were very influenced by Denethor. And by that influence they weren't as brave but more worried about their own life.
@delvo71 it did show the troops as being brave and strong but they were outnumbered and were given orders by an ailing king. At that time in the movie the City had slowly decayed and therefore vulnerable to attack. So Peter balanced it quite well i believe.
@delvo71 Yeah I can definitely understand the disappointment. But that's part of the theme that people had been talking about all throughout the book. Gondor is only a shadow of its former self, and it has waned and fallen to shadow. I feel like he captured the truth of Gondor very well, though it is kinda sad.
same and buy and paint little soilders from this game shop i know and place them around and make it look like its alive and just showcase that in a place in my room
I love Minas Tirith and Faramir is fucking sexy! And I love how it sounds when they say Minas Tirith :)

The actors seem a little stuck to describe it initially, but Minas Tirith is one of the most iconic buildings in the entire trilogy.

faramir is also my favorite character. it seems strange. other people would go for aragorn, or legolas, or gandalf.. or frodo... but i LOVE faramir, and sam too.

@nutbustedhaji He is mine fav character too. :) I like him in the books, sometimes I just read only the scenes where he is, hehe... And I like very much how David Wenham has portrayed him. :)

I love the idea, that Minas Tirith is rationed in 7 rings and each ring is seperated by the gates...
I'd like to live there :)

I don't like how in the movies Peter made Gondor look extremely weak. I mean, Gondor was meant to be strong, prosperous, and just really nice overall. He made the city great, but the troops were fleeing and confused when he should've showed them as strong, brave men who fought for their city...just my opinion.
delvo71 2 years ago 38
But its the weak humans that fall for the ring the quickest. Of course they also flee ^^
liammaier 2 years ago
yeah I didnt really like that either. After watching helms deep where the elves and soldiers of rohan fought bravely it was kind of a change of scenery to see some soldiers fleeing. However I think it was sort of made up for after gondor attacks back with the trebuchets and fights the orcs and attack trolls that break through the gate.
JaredTheOmega12 2 years ago
he was being realistic. if u want fantasy men not scared of thousands of troops and certain death watch 300. this is lotr, he wanted to show what really would happen in battle. there was 600 orcs to one man, in real life this battle wouldve lasted about 6 hours.
GoodRiddance7230 2 years ago
I don't agree to that at all. 300 is nothing like this at all, so why reference this to them. Plus 300 was not fantasy men. They were real. Also on a side note, Rohan was outnumbered as well, but they stood their ground and fought. They did not flee, so...my point exactly is he messed up.
delvo71 2 years ago
I personally liked the despair shown in Gondor's lines which was due to the fact that they were overwhelmed and had no leader. Once Gandalf took leadership they started fighting back though I can't remember if that development is true to the book ...
djbanizza 2 years ago 2
Not strong or proseperous perhaps compared to its glory days. But I definetly agree that PJ made the soldiers look really silly... The orcs tend to win battles one on one vs Gondorians (like at Osgiliath) which is beyond ridiculous.
LimesNorrlandicus 2 years ago
I agree every battle scene seems to have some poor Gondorian being whooooped!
ObikweluFan 2 years ago 2

So the book and movie are different you can't compare.
hannigan06 1 year ago
@hannigan06 welll i think he did a great job, it's sometimes nice to have a movie that doesn't have all the elements and scenes that the book offers.
wildgirl142 1 year ago
@wildgirl142 I'm not saying he didn't I'm just saying I love them both but there not the same considering that they were filmed out of sequence meaning the films.
hannigan06 1 year ago
@delvo71 I'm going to have to disagree with you. He makes them powerful at times. They're at least brave when they're defending Osgiliath. And remember, the presence of all nine Nazgul during the battle probably put an extra element of fear into their hearts.
also, they were up against a force of 200,000 orcs. I think anyone would wet their pants at just the thought of having to confront that kind of army.
togio100 1 year ago
@togio100 yeah i agree with you Gondor only had 10,000 vs 200,000 plus the 1,000easterlings and 1,000 haradrim , 100 trolls and wargs 20 catapults and siege towers and all nine nazgul at least the spearmen and archers did alot damage but the swordsman werent that good though what do you think??
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot I wasn't really noticing whether the swordsmen were up to snuff or not. I was watching all the other bajillion awesome things going on in that battle.
Seriously, I never noticed. ANd I don't think they did that badly for a crowd of extras and stuntmen.
at the end of the day, ROTK still has the best battles scenes in any modern film (sorry Two Towers and Avatar), so I suppose it doesn't matter if certain details are out of whack
togio100 1 year ago
@togio100 Hell yeah ROTK IS AWESOME!!!!!
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
Too bad that for many decades the city's been corrupted (or at least the Stewart's mind has been) by Sauron, so the morale has significantly dropped. Soldiers were also running amok when it was besieged because of Denethor's fear itself, until Gandalf took charge of everything. That actually is a big part of the third book, because if the city was to be as strong as it was many years before, there wouldn't be much significance to the return of the king.
cannabisabuser 1 year ago
@delvo71 Yeah, but don't forget that Denethor was ruling...
Dolf9271986 1 year ago
@delvo71 yep basicly he had an point cause the king i mean the throne keeper was like IM SO SMART U ALL ARE RETARDS HAHAHA GO F YOURSELVES ROHAN AND GANDALF HAHA i think thats cause gondor was going to fall the throne keeper stewart or whatever he was didnt think that orcs are going to attack he was like I WANT THE RING he was kinda possesed or sth like boromir was at beginning he was like GIMME THA RING RETARD HOBBIT and thats why he died it is year weak put has a point there
raino1000 1 year ago
@delvo71 In the books they did flee, it states during the seige that only the men from Dol Amroth were brave enough to stand and defend the first lvl, the rest ran to the 2nd. However, PJ did show that, in the books, the men that ran also regrouped and even pushed the orcs out of the city and fought on the Pelennor with the Rohirrim in a pitched battle, something I think he should have shown.
Tripyourift2 1 year ago
@Tripyourift2 mmm P.J doubled the size of the enemy army , plus he started the siege way too early in the books it starts at midnight , in the movies 6 hours earlier .Also In the book Gondor had 7,000 men in the movie P.J didnt show the reinforcements so they only had about 5,000 . Also in the book the orcs never made it into the city so the gondor armies didnt have to drive them out .
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@Tripyourift2 In the books not only the knight of Amroth stood there ground a few others did as well , Also because P.J started the siege 6 hours earlier the orcs had plenty of time to move into the city . I still think Gondor did fine in the movie considering they only had 5,000 in the movie .
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@delvo71 yeah but gondor was at it weakest state whitout a king not unifid anymore and not as wealthy anymore having lost de dunedains
Jysey 1 year ago
Peter clearly wanted to show how the city had begun to slowly deteriorate over time without a proper King. The Stewart of Gondor was not much of a leader at all and he definitely wasn't the type to inspire his people with a speech and make them all prideful and full of hope. He was a very loathing bitter old man that did not take the city and its people's best interest at heart. I think Peter captured that terrifically.
Tess1061 1 year ago
@delvo71 the book describes gondor as a fading kingdom. Middle-Earth is at its dark times, that's why Minas Tirith is this way. It shows all the sadness and nostalgia for the shining years of the old Kings.
riffsesolos 1 year ago
@delvo71 in the book they were cowering aswell
dumbcheese123 1 year ago
@delvo71 agree. Although I don't feel Gondor at that point and time was really that strong, but Mina Tirith is a city more fortified than helm's deep. It baffles me when some catapult hurl some rock and breach the city walls.
Guanchen 1 year ago
@delvo71 i do see what you're saying, but if he made them COMPLETELY fearless and aggressive, it would have sort of ruined the whole idea that there is a question presented throughout the trilogy about whether men are too weak and selfish to save middle earth that is only answered at the end of the story.
samm1809 1 year ago
@delvo71 I agree with you with the men fleeing and stuff, but they were getting those orders from a mad man..
mathias510 1 year ago
@delvo71 he tried to follow what tolkien had written in the book, and minas tirith itself was... weak and i quote from the book "yet in truth falling year by year into decay; and already lacked half the men that could have dwelt at ease there"... and bout the troops fleeing "but the faithful who remained there at their posts were few; most had fled beyond the second gate"
iam1and1isme 1 year ago 2
@delvo71 Yes agreed, but I think he did it to show the audience how bad of a steward Denethor was.
BAMF5550123 1 year ago
@delvo71 The city and its inhabitants reflect the downfall of numenorian culture aswell as the white tree from Numenor until Aragorn claims the throne for the Numenor Kings again. And btw. the soldiers are as brave as they could possibly be facing a ten times larger army than their own. In this case the courage of the men is the only thing that remained unshaken, reasonably they are frightened though.
5uckRogers 1 year ago 5
@5uckRogers Ten times? How is 200,000+ besieging a citadel with only about 2,000-3,000 troops 10x? If you ask me its about 80-100 times greater.
BlowShitUp12 1 year ago
@BlowShitUp12 The orc arme was around 600 000 orcs, not sure but Gondor's army should be around 50 000
12345678909269 1 year ago
@12345678909269 No it was more like 200,000 orcs vs a few thousand Gondorian soldiers 2,000-3,000.
BlowShitUp12 1 year ago
@BlowShitUp12 Actually if you divide 200,000 by 2000 you get 100 and 3000 = 66.6 % :P
Just ignore this comment btw I was bored XD
SpudNip17 10 months ago
@delvo71 but wasn't it that those people were very influenced by Denethor. And by that influence they weren't as brave but more worried about their own life.
m0tionlessskull 1 year ago
@m0tionlessskull Good point. Good point.
SATANECRONOMICUS 1 year ago
@delvo71 it did show the troops as being brave and strong but they were outnumbered and were given orders by an ailing king. At that time in the movie the City had slowly decayed and therefore vulnerable to attack. So Peter balanced it quite well i believe.
mrocean21 1 year ago
@delvo71 Yeah I can definitely understand the disappointment. But that's part of the theme that people had been talking about all throughout the book. Gondor is only a shadow of its former self, and it has waned and fallen to shadow. I feel like he captured the truth of Gondor very well, though it is kinda sad.
dinohunter17 1 year ago
@delvo71
That way he wouldn't cause viewer's fear of man losing the battle in my opinion, everything got it's purpose i guess :P
evil33t 11 months ago
@delvo71 I totally agree; the Gondorian soldiers came off as weaker than they should have been.
