i got a Chevy S/10 with a third door. i load up in the same manner. you can get an EMS 7500 system online for about 45.00 bucks and use it on you ass to build up muscle to help keep the wounds down. works great.
The Lincoln concept car in the video is merely an updated version of the 1961-1969 Lincoln Continental sedan--those cars also had rear-opening--or "suicide" doors as they were called back in the day. I do know of a male wheelchair user who had somewhat incredibly modified a 1987 Corvette and used it for a daily driver.
Remember this--Fiat had to pull out of the U.S. market in 1982 because of the poor quality cars they built which virtually disappeared from American roads by 1986--I would not buy a Fiat. Scion is Toyota--once an excellent vehicle--but quality has slid hence the recalls. Honda is probably the most reliable at this point, but I do not know how easily they can be adapted.
They don't make saturn anymore Scion IQ or FR-S or the Fiat Abarth 500 are far better cars compared to any saturn but then again I can walk so I don't know what you need in car may be different from me.
I'm a T-12 L1-L2, the Mazda 5 has a nice suicide door as well. You can take out the back seat behind the driver and add the same strap to the suicide door to shut it and you're good to go with a set of hand controls. Simple super easy mod for anyone out there looking.
Hi! The Toyota FJ Cruiser has suicide doors too, and it's still on the market unlike some of those listed on the video (apparently they will discontinue the Element and the RX-8 in 2012)
You know Earl too? that guy is insanely popular. I met him at my first rugby practice. He helped me look for a truck of my own and where for me to get my gear. i like your set up, I definately dig the car! your transfers are kinda sketchy though, just saying. haha
wow i am very amazed u can do that.. i am a t9/12 and i cant do that lol. i just lift it over me and put it on the passenger seat i have a audi a6 avant (wagon) so if i have my friends or family with me they just put it in the trunk and just have to fold the backrest down.. u seem pretty chillax lol do u have fb? email me rossries@gmail.com
Hi Tamara, if I have my car with hand control I will be happy, a light wheelchair, I have much to do. You are an example for many SCI, I have SCI T12. Many greetings.
Hey Tamara! You are an incredible woman I must say and to think things out so well, just amazes me even from someone who has been in a wheelchair all my life. I am 26 years old but sadly do not have the money for any vehicle, much less a specially made vehicle. But taking online college classes to earn my degree and one day hopefully have the best job I possibly can. I have always been too scared to try and drive now anyway knowing I have never drove a day in my life but awesome video!
hmm!!! Interesting!!! I like to see how other para's/quads get in and out of their cars or whatever they drive. The way you transfer back into your car looks extremely taxing and difficult. How is it for you if you leave your legs out of the car and transfer? Any easier? Any harder?
Like, even though your spine is hosed, you're absolutely gorgeous. You appear to have your life pretty much together with your out-of-this-world Saturn. You go, girl!
nice car and you look good in your mod car i use a wheelchair i have use one well most of my life i would like to contact you and maybe if we can meet and get together for cofe so we can talk i would like to ask you many questions and see if any of your information can help me out im 25 my name is Hector thank you for your time
Hi Tamara nice mods... When I got my first handicap equiped car i didnt think things through like you did and bought a jeep cherokee with just handcontrols. I found out quickly that breaking my wheelchair all the time was aggrevaiting but now i have the freedom mobility with the side ramp and love it. I still have my jeep and dont mind driving it because it helps keep me in shape. Well i love your car congrats.
helo tam, nice car...me i've a Toyota Camry Sedan,it's nice & good too ! but i dont have take the wheelchair back like wat u do ..i've a kuschall wheechair, easy to remove parts . the 2 wheels, then can bring it to my next seat sitting..
u never show ur handdrive control ?! hope u show it next time!
Hi, Tamara: I am a wheelchair user who is looking to buy my first car. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can answer: (1) What year is your Saturn Ion? (2) How do you like its performance? [I ask b/c Saturns are no longer made so I would have to buy a used one with no warranty.] (3) Do you have power seats to help you go forward and backward?
So cute still taking time to wear sexy sandals Tamara.

@dsulliva100 1. 2007 (last year model Saturn Ion Quad Coupes were made).
2. I love it! Saturns are really good cars, and it's been a great car to have. More importantly, I love the setup! The setup is worth everything.
3. No, I do not have power seats- that is something I would want. However, we reversed the driver seat's springs to help me go forward.
Thanks,
Tamara
