All you idiot Michigan fans with your ex-poste rationalizations need to ask yourself, did ONE person think it wouldn't be a big deal if you lost before this game started? Was there ONE living human being ON EARTH who even BARELY muttered the words you're using now? Did ANYONE say "If we lose, well, they are the defending 1-AA champs after all." NO. Nobody ever fucking said that, except you and your idiotic backwards logic. DEAL WITH IT. APP STATE MADE HISTORY, AND THEY MADE IT ON YOUR BACK.
So glad I was in disneyworld that day... but there is one thing worse than losing to app state. And that is losing to the team that lost to app state, especially if you are the defending national champ (Michigan beat florida later that year)
I love when people run their mouths not having any idea what they are talking about. Appalachian State in 2005 won the I-AA national championship, 2006 and 2007 won the Fcs national championships. They were not your avg AA team. Yes they played AA football, but that by no means makes them weak. Nothing embarrassing about losing to 3 time National champions.
@MrRyanlester5789 1) It ended your BCS National Championship hopes in the first game of the year. 2) You had to go through one of those three years, simply just watching out of knowing that the team wouldn't go anywhere 3) It just destroyed their mentalities, which ended up causing them to lose more games 4) By doing so, it would be the end of the top ranked period for Michigan 5) I'm a ND fan :D lol, don't feel bad! :D
@NegativeCreep121 Hey, at least it's not as bad as pokemon. Enslaving little animals and making them fight eachother. Our next generation is going to be FULL of Michael Vicks.
@Tigersfan829 Sounds like the same story except different year..Offense can move but the defense could not stop a 91 year old that is running from them..LOL
@JKM070 Hey since Alabama is such a tradition-rich program, maybe you should act like you've been there before. App State is a powerhouse in D1AA...definitely the most nationally recognized D1AA team. If i had to pick a D1AA team who had the best chance against the big D1A teams, i would pick App no doubt.
people think app state is a hillbilly school....its not. it is about as hard (if not harder this year) to get into as nc state. it is also a very nice school, and in Boone, which is a clean town full of ski resorts and hiking trails. lots of rich people from Florida own vacation homes there.
i mean as far as public universities go, it has always been ranked second in the state, behind unc. which means it was harder than unc wilmington, asheville, pembroke, greensboro, charlotte, east carolina, western, and app. Wake forest and duke are private schools. this year app passed nc state though. app got over 16,000 applicants with 3,000 spaces available.
i take back what i said; i dont think anyone knows for sure. colleges look for different things in their students. however, statistically, NC State officially accepts 59% of applicants. App accepts 58%. the lowest average SAT score for App is 1590, for NCSU it's 1580.of course we are leaving out a lot of other things. however, if you go to collegeboard and compare universities, you will see how close they are.
yeah i know but nc state is better trust me im a student...the acceptance rate is based on the quality of the student applying...i applied to both and got into app but not state.. luckily i got into my first choice
you go to app?? so do i, im in frank hall on the west side of campus. yeah i got accepted into NC State and app. my sister went to state. true, the applicant pool for state might be more competitive. idk, app is definitely getting close to state. i could see app passing state in the future if the trend continues.

Neither can I.....and I am a Buckeye! What has happened to Michigan's FIGHT? Last week against Wisky....impressive in the second half. This week against Illinois they looked like a colossal Train Wreck.
This is the second greatest upset in college football history....fortunately for Missagain USC had an even bigger choke against Stanford later in the same year. WOW! 2007 was crazy!
App State beating Michigan is a WAY bigger upset than Stanford beating USC. Stanford is in the same division and conference as USC. Applachian State is in a lower division than Michigan. Thats like a JV team beating a varsity team, its just not supposed to happen.
Respectfully disagree with your opinion on this one. App St is a winning program and has won several national titles even if at a lower classification. They are good enough to compete against the lower half of division one right now and be competitive. Stanford, on the other hand, is a program that has lost consistently and has shown little to no signs of life over the last several years. The linesmakers saw it that way too when they put them as a 41 point underdog.
Anyone who understands football knows that the USC Stanford games was the bigger upset. App St. won their 3rd national championship in a row that year.
1-AA schools beat D1 schools all the time. Stanford was a 47 1/2 point underdog. Corso, Herbstriet, May and Holtz even agree on this.
Michigan ended up 9-4 (6-2 in Big 10 play)last year and ranked # 21 after beating #9 Florida in the Capital One bowl. Michigan beat #10 Penn St and lost a close 3-14 game to #7 Ohio St. This year Michigan finished 3-9.............. So I guess you are right, Michigan was terrible last season.
There are big differences when it comes to match-ups and depth. The lower divisions usually have smaller, slower, lighter players. The difference in schollies players-walk-ons are way bigger. DI has more players than a lower division team, Michigan had over 100 players to Appy St's 60 players. Half of Appy's players were probably walk-ons as well. MICH should have won BIG. No excuses. Plus Michigan would have more 4* or 5* star players than Appy St. No MORE EXCUSES!!! Heard them all w UTAH/Bama.
last year was the best ive seen in along time. even schools like s.c lost to stanford. it was a crazy year but i think this season i wouldnt exspect to see it again. im sure lsu is going to kill app state.
Well ok here is a FACT ummmmmm Appalachain State beat Michigan at there own HOME. Many upsets in DIV I like USF beat Auburn at Auburn. ULM beat Alabama at Alabama. See my point?
That was because we used Austin Scott. Don't get me wrong, Michigan did what any good team would do and took advantage of Austin Scott's fumbling. But remember, Austin Scott was responsible for us being down 3-0 to Buffalo at the end of the first quarter. Looking forward to that 45-0 thrasing that Michigan's gonna get in 2008.
But the series is 3-10 overall. Don't forget you got beat 3 straight times during 1994, 1995, and 1996. It's about to go the other way now with some Penn State victories again.
And look at the way Penn State played during the first quarter and a half of the Buffalo game, the Michigan game, and the Illinois game. That wasn't the same PSU team that murdered Wisconsin 38-7. This Penn State played like shit. Scott constantly shot us in the foot, giving us problems against BUFFALO, of all teams.
Listen up dude,YOU ARE,penn st. We're more concerned about how we're going to get back into our REAL rivalry, O$U. Hen state is the least of our worries at this time.I'm not saying that Hen state won't give us a little difficulty, hell you might even squeak it out, but 45-0?C'mon! You must smoke a lot of jibber if you truly believe that!Everyone is saying"you got a freshman QB",so what!Henne was a true starting freshman and UM stood tall.Even if you did win, you'll be 1-9 in the last 10 years.
Look at 2006, your best Michigan team in a decade comes to Beaver Stadium against unranked Penn State, has their running game stuffed, knocks out two QBs but the third QB reads the Michigan defense like a book, and PSU very nearly won. I say 45-0 because Michigan is going to fall apart and lose two big games (OSU and PSU). And I'll be happy if it becomes 4-10, because 4-10 sure beats the hell out of 3-11. Also Henne was a Sophomore in 2005, we never played Michigan in 2004.
Alright slappy, I'm not going to continie this stupid "delusional" argument w/your dumb ass.Apparently you don't have a clue about Michigan football.Henne DID start as a "true" freshman and played 4 years straight, against Hen state or not. Nearly won...doesn't count as a win.You came close, but failed to keep a man on Manningham & he caught you w/your pants down.I think although we might have some hurdles this season, the whole B10 is going to be talking about Michigans speed, u can bet on that!
I didn't say he didn't start as a true Freshman, I said he didn't play against Penn State as one. The 2005 game I still think is illegitimate. 2006 annd 2007 were legitimate wins by Michigan, but still close. In 2008 you won't have Manningham, Hart, Henne, or even Mallet. I don't think Michigan will be able to stop Carter and Royster, and will have a touch time with Clark. And we don't have Austin Scott anymore (thank God!). And it's in Beaver Stadium. I see a 7-5 or 8-4 season for Michigan.
This is a classic lesson in needing to have a TEAM effort, not just a Mike Hart! The rest of the Meeshigan squad pulled up lame and got taught a lesson by APP State who just wanted it more and played a lot harder and with a lot more heart.
This is what happens when you assume that you just show up in the big house and paying off the refs is going to get 'er down. I'm loving it! Already Oregon has stuffed them, next up a hapless ND team will beat 'em ugly and Meeshigan fans will lose their cool. They only have their arrogance to tame with a triple play humble pie.
Thank you I go to app and its nice to see just a plain old compliment w/o all the big ten rivalry drama getting in the way so Thanks again from the Mountaineer Nation
Tremendous to have Michigan suffer the greatest upset in CFB history. For years to come, any OSU fan can just say "Appalachian State" and there's no comeback. But now Carr is almost certainly done, which means the Wolverines might hire a coach that can win a big game. It also hurt the Big 10's rep (though ... how is the SEC worlds better when the Big 10 is 8-6 against the SEC in bowl games over the past 5 years and 2-1 last year?)
Yes we know UM lost to a FSC,or Division II-A school whatever you want to call it they lost & for the people screaming and yelling OSU you got to remember you lost to The Gators in the National Championship so there's only one thing to say the Big X is weak!!!!!
This Michigan loss to a 2-A team is probably the most inopportune time for any Big 10 team to cheer at a Michigan failure. This only shows how weak the Big 10 conference has gotten over the past few years. All I have to say is, I sure hope no other Big 10 team has to play a decent squad from 2-A.
Not by I-A standards, but for a Division I-AA team they're really good. They don't always win the national championship, but they consistently perform near the top. They're like the Ohio State of Division I-AA.
App State beats a struggling Michigan team narrowly, considered by some as the greatest upset of all time, and now you are calling out LSU? Easy MVillani. This game was simply an upset.
Remember, before they game, App State was thought to only be good enough to give a MAC cellar dweller fits. App State ends up pulling an upset on a Michigan team that finishes the year ranked in the top 20 after upsetting #9 Florida in the Capital One Bowl. They finished 9-4, not 0-12 or even 6-6.
I don't think it will be easy, but I think App State actually has a chance at winning here. Remember, in 2005, you went 10-2 after struggling a little against that same team.
im so glad they beat michigan hope some other "team like that" (like they call it) do that more often to show that the games have to be play before they even won by the so call power houses.. hope it happens again a wakeup call for 108,000.00 people in the stands! and millions who saw that game or the highlights on tv.
Iowa State vs Oklahoma State can take this title now.

So I guess you are right, Michigan was terrible last season.
jkbezo 3 years ago
Right. And App. State won the National Championship in one divison lower.
Stanford over USC, Temple over VT are the biggest upsets in the modern football era.
fol2005 3 years ago
There are big differences when it comes to match-ups and depth. The lower divisions usually have smaller, slower, lighter players. The difference in schollies players-walk-ons are way bigger. DI has more players than a lower division team, Michigan had over 100 players to Appy St's 60 players. Half of Appy's players were probably walk-ons as well. MICH should have won BIG. No excuses. Plus Michigan would have more 4* or 5* star players than Appy St. No MORE EXCUSES!!! Heard them all w UTAH/Bama.

WTF happened to Mike Hart, Mario Manningham and Chad Henne. Oh ya thats right Mike Hart got hurt. He's a sissy. PSU!!!
PinstripeTuxedos 4 years ago
Have you even played football? Fucking dumbass, an ankle injury is one of the worst injuries for a running back. Learn before you post.
ColoradoTypewriter 4 years ago
Not to mention...wasn't it PSU that lost to this "shitty" wolverine team (14-9)? Also, to an unexpierenced freshman quarterback? PSU...whatever!
Brewhaman 4 years ago
That was because we used Austin Scott. Don't get me wrong, Michigan did what any good team would do and took advantage of Austin Scott's fumbling. But remember, Austin Scott was responsible for us being down 3-0 to Buffalo at the end of the first quarter. Looking forward to that 45-0 thrasing that Michigan's gonna get in 2008.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Like you have any room to talk, 0-9 in the past 9 meetings...STFU!
Austin Scott??? The rapist?
Brewhaman 3 years ago
But the series is 3-10 overall. Don't forget you got beat 3 straight times during 1994, 1995, and 1996. It's about to go the other way now with some Penn State victories again.
And look at the way Penn State played during the first quarter and a half of the Buffalo game, the Michigan game, and the Illinois game. That wasn't the same PSU team that murdered Wisconsin 38-7. This Penn State played like shit. Scott constantly shot us in the foot, giving us problems against BUFFALO, of all teams.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Listen up dude,YOU ARE,penn st. We're more concerned about how we're going to get back into our REAL rivalry, O$U. Hen state is the least of our worries at this time.I'm not saying that Hen state won't give us a little difficulty, hell you might even squeak it out, but 45-0?C'mon! You must smoke a lot of jibber if you truly believe that!Everyone is saying"you got a freshman QB",so what!Henne was a true starting freshman and UM stood tall.Even if you did win, you'll be 1-9 in the last 10 years.
Brewhaman 3 years ago
Look at 2006, your best Michigan team in a decade comes to Beaver Stadium against unranked Penn State, has their running game stuffed, knocks out two QBs but the third QB reads the Michigan defense like a book, and PSU very nearly won. I say 45-0 because Michigan is going to fall apart and lose two big games (OSU and PSU). And I'll be happy if it becomes 4-10, because 4-10 sure beats the hell out of 3-11. Also Henne was a Sophomore in 2005, we never played Michigan in 2004.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Alright slappy, I'm not going to continie this stupid "delusional" argument w/your dumb ass.Apparently you don't have a clue about Michigan football.Henne DID start as a "true" freshman and played 4 years straight, against Hen state or not. Nearly won...doesn't count as a win.You came close, but failed to keep a man on Manningham & he caught you w/your pants down.I think although we might have some hurdles this season, the whole B10 is going to be talking about Michigans speed, u can bet on that!
Brewhaman 3 years ago

AnAmericanFan 4 years ago 3
This is what happens when you assume that you just show up in the big house and paying off the refs is going to get 'er down. I'm loving it! Already Oregon has stuffed them, next up a hapless ND team will beat 'em ugly and Meeshigan fans will lose their cool. They only have their arrogance to tame with a triple play humble pie.

michigan move to fcs please they would win it ever year and maybe if Ohio state would score more than a field goal on akron they could talk

Still ... Appalachian State!
Buckeye97 4 years ago
michigan who?
badgerfan362 4 years ago
Yes we know UM lost to a FSC,or Division II-A school whatever you want to call it they lost & for the people screaming and yelling OSU you got to remember you lost to The Gators in the National Championship so there's only one thing to say the Big X is weak!!!!!
spliffstar88 4 years ago
This Michigan loss to a 2-A team is probably the most inopportune time for any Big 10 team to cheer at a Michigan failure. This only shows how weak the Big 10 conference has gotten over the past few years. All I have to say is, I sure hope no other Big 10 team has to play a decent squad from 2-A.

Penn State played Youngstown State in 2006 and beat them pretty bad. And everyone knows that Youngstown State is a good team.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Youngstown State is NOT a good team. Not even close.
matt61387 3 years ago 3
Not by I-A standards, but for a Division I-AA team they're really good. They don't always win the national championship, but they consistently perform near the top. They're like the Ohio State of Division I-AA.
MVillani1985 3 years ago 2
actually we do always win national championship. 3 in a row now
drumr4life509 3 years ago
I was referring to Youngstown State. Appalachian State is actually so good that I expect them to make it four and a row and possibly upset LSU.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
App State beats a struggling Michigan team narrowly, considered by some as the greatest upset of all time, and now you are calling out LSU? Easy MVillani. This game was simply an upset.
fol2005 3 years ago
Remember, before they game, App State was thought to only be good enough to give a MAC cellar dweller fits. App State ends up pulling an upset on a Michigan team that finishes the year ranked in the top 20 after upsetting #9 Florida in the Capital One Bowl. They finished 9-4, not 0-12 or even 6-6.
I don't think it will be easy, but I think App State actually has a chance at winning here. Remember, in 2005, you went 10-2 after struggling a little against that same team.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Stanford 41 pt underdogs there was biggest upset all year easy
