I come from a place where there is a majority language and there is a minority language. My native tongue is the minority 1.I've been grown to think that if nobody uses it, it will be lost. 1 day I decided I won't let it disappear, so I chose to speak to every1 in my language, even if they reply back in theirs. How did I present that change? I did not. I just start speaking in my language to every1.Nobody ask me why suddenly I was talking in a different language. So yes, don't be out, just be out
I find that people's reaction to finding out how I am different from the "norm" is a great indicator of whether or not I'm going to be in a relationship (friendship or more) with them.
If it was me I would not tell anyone I was an atheist lesbian. It would bring too much heat from people who don't think well. Facts show that it is not yet time to be open with this stuff- at least at work.
Brilliant video — great perspective. Although it's the stuff of movies and soap operas, the classic 'Hey I've got something to tell you' line isn't the only way to go — nor in fact necessarily anything like the best way to go. When it's framed like that, it can make it into something that has to be reacted to. When it's just another part of conversations about life, as your video points out, it can feel so much more natural.
I thought you were talking about coming out as an atheist in the first place, which as you say should be considered as socially important as one's sexuality. I don't find very many people on youtube who can actually make me think, I think that aspect of your's will dominate my opinion of you.
"What is your stance on telling coworkers about your _____?"
I guarantee that someone who wants to gossip about me will find a way regardless of who I sleep with or what gods to which I pray. No one can live a socially perfect life. Those who try end up like Ted Haggard.
I find you attractive! I'm a guy, I find that alot of lesbians are attractive, thats my part of my bad luck with women, besides some streight women being taken!
For me when I feel different from the group Im in I kinda do what you do, I just be myself and when the difference comes up I discuss it openly. In general Ive found that people I associate with are nice people and will ask me a few questions here and there out of curiosity as I do when I encounter someone that is different from myself
Happy slightly late Thanksgiving right back at ya! As a heterosexual man, I can also appreciate and congratulate you for your security in whom you truly are. Never be ashamed. Never let others tell you that you are wrong if what you do is right for you. You are individually unique and awesome!
@sketchbookessay Getting my Masters of International Business (thus, the semester in France) and my MBA. I'm done in July with the whole thing, and then I'm back in the workforce (hopefully)
I also observed that simply talking in a normal fashion about my stance on matters concerning faith doesn't raise as many eye brows as when I'd explicitly say I'm an atheist. I found it more efficient and more socially acceptable, plus the message gets across more easily without people going into a mental blockage.
Same for quack treatments, pseudo science, dowsing and all sceptical matters.
Good on ya. The last time that I talked about my atheism was something to the effect of. "Yeah, but there's no paradise until the afterlife" To which I had to respond 'This is paradise for me, because I don't believe in gods or devils, or things that can't be proven'. This guy was arguing from the first cause argument, to which I responded that I didn't know, neither did he, and I was content with that. Not to ruffle feathers, he didn't understand how 'god was there always' wasn't consistent
When I feel like the odd one out I try and identify what I do have in common with the others and highlight and focus on that. It also provides an opportunity to frame my difference in a more meaningful context.
I worked for a while in a church directory company as a photographer. I couldn't really out my atheism, but I did the next best thing. I just ignore people when they spoke about God - and that happened all the time. I wasn't rude. I just talked about something else.
By being unabashed and belligerent. I don't go around announcing all the things I am, but I don't try to hide anything and I sure as hell won't apologize. And my policy is that hostility will be met with hostility.
This is exactly what I do. I never "come out" If conversation turns to relationships, which it inevitably does, then it gets mentionned.
I used to make much more of an issue of my sexuality, I was less secure about it then. I realised that my sexuality is a part of me, among MANY things, it doesn't define me.
Today, I actually get a little annoyed at people who define themselves by their sexuality.
@Kabloomybuzz I think labels can be useful if you use them to your advantage. For example, if I define myself as a lesbian, what I am hoping to accomplish is to get other gay people to come out to me and form a community with me. I do feel more comfortable around my queer brethren, I have to admit, and sometimes I just like to find my rainbow crew and have a good time. But when people become completely one dimensional and their house looks like a carebear exploded in it... not so good. :)
@BornWithoutReligion Absolutely, there is nothing wrong with labels. What I mean by people having their sexuality define themselves is when they seem to live their life according to their sexuality. Especially with some gay and lesbian people. Some people see themselves as gay before they seem themselves as anything else. I've found myself distancing myself from the "LGBT community" as I got bored of their seemingly one dimensional view of the world.
@BornWithoutReligion Though saying that, I have found myself less certain of my sexuality as I have been over the past few years. I feel sexuality CAN be somewhat fluid and in those cases, labels can be less helpful to the individual.

I love sex. At least, what I remember of it. Yeah, sex would be cool. I think. Or so I've been led to believe. But then there's bacon...
Why are we still talking about this?
And the point? Every little fucking silly scribbled bits of insanity, millenia-old, talked about nothing but.
Kudos to you.You are living proof of humanity and I think you're great.
