Along with the lost railways throughout the UK,sadly, our country is going down the same path. Its biggest evil has always been, putting PROFIT before people....so sad really?
beautiful and I would guess rare footage. An exellent video. For those of us familiar with the locations it is quite haunting to see them as they were not so very long ago
@Lost00track I REMEMBER THE LAST OF THEM RUNNING, NOW ALL I HAVE LEFT ARE MEMORIES AND THESE VIDEOS THAT PEOPLE POST, I WOULD LOVE TO GET A DVD OF THESE VIDEOS, NOW THAT I LIVE IN CANADA.
@sd24440 You could try ebay, there is an Isle of Wight steam railway dvd, also Mike Morrants website and plumb loco have some very nice photos. Better still come o the Island for a holiday and see W24 Calbourne at Haven Street, now running again after 8 years in the workshop. looks great now in BR livery. :-)
@Lost00track I would love to come back for holiday but at the moment flights from Ottawa, Ontario are $1100.00 /person (690 pounds) but still looking into it for 2011
We stay with my Aunt in East Cowes. are u from the island? thanks for the heads up on ebay and Mike morrant.
Wonderful video... Sitting here watching it with my 2 year old (who is a Thomas fan), explaining that these are real engines, and that's a real water tower etc. - Thanks for sharing!
@Marillionmad I have to correct history here It wasn't Beeching that was responsible he was only the hatchet man .The order was given by the then minister of transport Ernest Marples who by a trick managed to disguise his shares in Marples Rideway construction who built the M1,thats why on many of the M1 bridges years ago people painted "Marples must go".Eventually he fled the U.K. because the inland revenue were after him for tax evasion he was a crook(O.K. family sue me for libel !)Check Wiki
@Marillionmad This wasn't any mistake it was deliberate. This country is run by criminals for criminals and all 3 main political parties are rubbish. Real hardship was caused by this railway closure. Sometimes very recently you would get off a train at Shanklin and have to wait nearly 1 hour for next Ventnor bus. For years, the local bus company deliberately ignored people travelling from Portsmouth to Ventnor.
@Marillionmad Even now, a journey from Wroxall to Shanklin takes 35 mins, in 1965 it was just 7 mins as a direct train journey. A stop-go juddering bus journey can never replace a train service. Ventnor has been robbed and now we have a council run by hatchet men who are finishing off the job. Ventnor Winter Gardens sold by this dreadful council to developers for £1 and Ventnor Middle School being demolished.
@horchan1216 Beeching was given a task to do by the Government of the day and that is precisely what he did. It was not Beeching who decimated our railways it was the people of the time who killed the railways off with their cars. What was wrong however was the way in which the system was ripped up sometimes days after closure so that there was no hope ever in the future of re-opening lines. Beeching was wrong in our eyes now, but he had no option if the rest of the network was to survive intact
Thank goodness for the person who took the origanal film.I live about half a mile from Ventnor station.Good clip must have taken some time to put together.

1:08 to 1:32 is quite beautiful. I love how nature has taken over and yet still retains the pure lines of old architecture. Simply lovely.

i have walked the disused branch from Shanklin to Wroxall. The majority of it is still intact and could be reopened to trains.

@Marillionmad at least some local councils are reopening some lines that were closed, Beeching clearly could not think about the future

Great video.
It's a shame that they never kept the Island line as an all steam "Heritage" line. It would have been a great tourist attaraction.
Oh well - What might have been.
