This version is great and those who say that its crap are wrong. But for those of you say its better than the original, remember this: without the original this version would not exist. The fact The Who came up with the song makes their "version" better.
Man I like The Who... but you gotta give credit to Pearl Jam. This is a freaking awesome cover. Pearl Jam does some badass covers. Just one of the many reasons that Pearl Jam is the greatest freakin band ever
The Who was my favorite band back in the late 70's early 80's and I have to say that Pearl Jam did this song a great honor the way they covered it. Absolutely love it!
If anybody could have pulled off covering this song Eddie Vetter is THE ONE. Hear the passion in his voice? He makes you feel what he feels... Just like Roger Daltery did with the original.
Great cover! Pearl Jam is amongst the greatest of all.
And for those of you who get offended that Pearl Jam did this song! They are only praising The Who, they aren’t trying to steal fans, or convert The Who fans to PJ fans. You guys are so narrow minded. If you only knew how much The Who inspired Eddie Vedder to mold his music after a legend like The Who you’d all feel like the idiot you already are!
Better than the original, this has more power, for example after the intro when the "Only love" part comes in, it's A LOT "heavier" than the original and has more punch, the original is just flat.
This song is awesome... even better than the original... Just listen to it with your eyes closed and you'll feel like flyin' hand to hand with the music and Eddie Vedder
awesome! and im not even a who fan. this video is the only video ive watched all day that played all the way through without any pauses. soooo cool. good job, 'thecandleofthought'!!
Pearl Jam does a fantastic job with this song, but it can't be better than the original. The original was the final chapter of something much more colossal that The Who created in the Quadrophenia album. Without the rest of the pieces in place, this can't possibly compare to the original, and that doesn't even take into account that NOBODY beat the shit out of their drums like Mr. Keith Moon did. No disrespect to PJ's drummer, but you can't compare to that. In any event, this still gets 5 stars!
First of all, Eddie Veder idolizes Pete Townshend and the Who. Eddie has pictures of Pete hanging up in his studio for god sake. Like the other guy said, Eddie would slap you silly if you thought his version was better than the Who. What's more, the album for which the song came from is Pete's greatest work. (Quadrophenia). I would recommend watching the Amazing Journey - a CD documentary on the Who. It's very well done, Veder is in the video.
I've seen The Who perform Quadrophenia live twice back in the 90s. I don't know if Pearl Jam's cover tops that. Extremely powerful performance. This definitely tops The Who's studio version though.
this song definately gives you butterflies. Especially in the movie when adam sandler is screaming along while he gets dragged out of the court room. So sad...So epic.
i kinda liked what you ddi with the other languages but im not a big fan of just trhowing in sentance fragments in when you cant get a picture of it. I also really like how the pictures when he was yelling it almost made it seem like he was actually yelling
no way any cover can sound better than the original, that is just life experience..........whoever said that has NO CLUE.....ASK eddie HE WOULD SAY THE SAME...............THE WHO RULE AND EDDIE KNOWS IT AS GOOD AS HE IS
okay, i'll chime in here: original is a classic, cover by PJ is exquisite. isn't a case of one being better than the other. both are great versions of a great song and both stand ably on their own. and a special nod to pete townshend for the songwriting. genius.
y'know, despite the classic greatness of the original artists, this song makes me shiver. it's just so beautiful. His vocals are amazing, the composition is fantastic, I can't fault it. x
this is truly a great song, the originals gd but im a big pearl jam fan so i prefer this one. made me cry in the film reign over me with adam sandler, great film
The best part about it is that Edie didn't improvise and make it his own. He kept it the same formula and perfected what Daltrey had started on the song. Still have to say Daltrey's is better because of the impact that song had when he sang it. REALLY good though, I didn't think anyone could properly cover this song.
@ComtendoS Well of course. Cover songs are never as good as the original. They may get close and they may even be as great as the original (this being a perfect example), but the original is always better
i remember hearing this in the adam sandler movie.....and the chorus is so powerful.....when the song came on in the credits...it was just so ...mindblowing......
Yeah, honestly, I really think Edie's vocals are better with regard to this song than Daltrey's...they're just more powerful, emotional, than the original. (but not knocking The Who's iteration, of course, because it's phenomenal, too)
That was damn good. And I don't typically like covers. I think the only covers in music library right now are Hendrix's covers of Bob Dylan songs. Anyway, I'm glad that they really stayed true to the original here.
i completely agree. The Who fans dont like to hear it, but this version is incredible. But, anything Pearl Jam does today couldnt be possible without bands like The Who, Zep, Floyd, and Humble Pie
@BrianCulticeMusic I like to hear it. Eddie Vedder is a huge supporter of The Who, isn't he? It's kind of a tribute. And a hell of a good one. I love this.
@BrianCulticeMusic I don't mind, I agree. This is the finale to one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite bands. I think Pearl Jam does it immense justice, I think. Awesome song, either way.
I honestly couldn't have picked a better band to cover this song. You can always tell when Vedder is feeling the song.....I think it's safe to say he's feelin' The Who! I love Townshend and Moon, but , Damn.
I literally shit in my pants when i heard this for the first time ... GOD, This is better than the Who !!! Although i have a huge amount of respect for "The Who" ... But .. This is Incredible !!!
wow! two of the greatest bands ever doing an awesome twist on the same song should be heaps of it just don't let limp bizkit try a mundane watered version of it
