Boy this is really stupid, I mean let's get honest her looking that way and Tavis Smiley, do you think anybody is thinking about math and her math skills. Even Tavis is going damn she's smokin!
I appreciate what she is trying to do, but really we need to teach children that mathematics is much more than just arithmetic. I wouldn't say that arithmetic excites too many people on its own; only about the same proportion of the population who would be excited to learn only the alphabet, without ever seeing words, sentences, or literature.
I have to agree with Danica McKellar with everything that she said with this clip. As a former math teacher, I had to combat with the negative attention that math has today plus other things involving education. If you think about it, to give math a better reputation, provide some real-life examples to interest more people just to have them think more.
Growing up, I only had one great Math Teacher. The rest were Bullies. Not that it matters but many of them came from foreign countries and thought that because they were taught a certain way, their students should be taught like that. I remember a friend of mine crying like a baby because she didn't understand how to do the Math Test she was given but the Teacher was a Grade A Beyotch. If she did now what she did then, she would have been fired.
math just became much more intellectually stimulating to me and i have a advanced engineering and mathematics degree. damn sexy. i love smart girls. 1 sexy lips plus one sexy lips = two sexy lips.
Not everyone is meant to change the world. SHe's doing what she enjoys with her life. If her passion is "bad movies for cable tv" then more power to her. Don't be disappointed in her, deal with your own life and your abilities. I see you've studied her well enough to know her movie roster... that's what you've chosen to do with your time, huh?
Not everyone is meant to change the world. She's doing what she enjoys and there is nothing wrong with that. The 2 books she's written are very helpful to kids, young girls in particular. I think she's a beautiful and intelligent young woman.
Danica has really disappointed me. With her abilities, she should do something useful instead of making bad movies for cable TV like "Inspector Mom," "Path of Destruction" and "Heatstroke."
Let the girl live her life. Obviously she's a very bright girl. If she decides to spend her time on movies, she should be allowed to do so. She's graduated college and has had a very successful career. I'm proud of her. Not everyone has the guts to go after that they want, but she does.
I think its referent to learning math through applications. Instead of using teaching math with isolated skills building, use math to actually do relavant real-world applications or calculating your intrest instead of doing book problems of detached hypothetical scenarios.
Because of Danica, I got an A+ in college math. Not only was it an A in college but it was the first time I EVER got an A math! I strongly recommend her books to anyone, and to anyone who's ever gotten F's in math like I did. Thanks Danica! You have to make DVD's teaching math!
When I was a kid and teenager I hated math. As an adult I love it because it is such a challenge and you don't realize how much you use math until you go out into the real world. It can be applied to so many different things unlike most of the other subjects in school. Although, I'm still trying to figure out what the heck a protractor is used for.
Hate to bust a hater: Who better to get kids interested in mathematics? You and you're "genius" mentor? Perhaps your elitism and exaggerated sense of importance may be a cause for math and physics to lose potential Godel's and Einsteins. "Genius" has it's place in math; but why not have a high profile and attractive ambassador to draw the next generation of "geniuses"?
Hate to bust the mood, but as I mathematician and physicist I think that's selling us short. Everyone bows down to her just because she's pretty and a well-known actress -she can publish a book which is essentially meaningless while true genius (such as my mentor's work) are laughed at, much less published. I am not saying this is because she's a girl (girls do just as well at math as boys). But she obviously is getting special treatment for being a celebrity, and that is the hubris of America.
(Apologies: my response is segmented due to YouTube's comment character limit. Also, I've numbered the paragraphs in appropriate order because postings are often misplaced by YouTube. Thanks.:)
1. But her books, which are written to assist young girls at succeeding in math and to be confident in their abilities, are targeted towards middle-school age girls--not exactly the target audience of your mentor's "genius" work.
2. Don't get me wrong, I'm the first to admit that American culture much too often disdains intellectualism and fetishizes celebrity, and I empathisize with you. However, considering the discrepancies in audience, the parallel between McKellar and your mentor is poor. Further, it is not the lay public who choses to publish or not publish a scientific paper; it is fellow academics who peer-review scholarly journals and accept or deny admissions.
4. And as far as popular American interest in science goes, well, we know how celebrated vapid celebrity culture can be, but regardless, several scientists (e.g., physicist Brian Greene, biologist Stephen Jay Gould, astrophysist Stephen Hawking, and numerous others) are widely respected and read by the general public.
5. Finally, I would hesitate to brand McKellar's work as "essentially meaningless." Clearly her books have proved a boon to young girls learning mathematics. And you might be surprised: some day one of those girls--maybe one initially intimidated by math--might come up with a revolutionary breakthrough in mathematics, or simply have the confidence in herself to realize her intellectual potential.
ok first off! she explains things so that teenage girls can understand... she uses funny comparisons and actually makes math fun! so instead of being a mathematician like you and not trying to teach teens how to have fun and like math she's actually trying! oh and what's that? she's also succeeding. plus, she has a freakin' theorem named after her... do you? probably not...
She is a girl of girls, equal rights is NOT wasted on this latest model type of a girl, she is the Girl-7800! God bless her and others that act like they should for the

YEAH BABY!! A LOGICAL WOMAN! Awright! She being super hot is the clincher bonus! Here you have a girl who takes care of herself enough to look the way she does. Prolly exercises, don't smoke, eats right. And then she exercises her mind as well. Beautiful. Oh, then she's got heart, helping gals and kids to tackle math. Sweet

I am happy she is addressing the math problem
but i am not sure her text book approach is
solving the problem.I think students need to
be exposed to solving problems like making a rocket or working with materials for an artifical arm or hand.
besttrack10 3 years ago
yeah, let's have students build rockets without basic math.
