If you care about the Atlantic Salmon, whose numbers are so depleted from historic numbers, you must release them. Taking this big fish out of the gene pool is a sin.
Thank you for your comment. Please read description of video. I agree that the genes of a fish like this should be passed on, but I also have to accept and respect the choice of the angler who caught it. The rise of Atlantic salmon in this river have increased from nearly nothing to over thousand salmon a year due to improved access to spawning areas and reestablishment of these areas as well as a wild fish stocking program...
Strict regulations make it possible to bring home a limited number of fish each year. It would be the experience of a lifetime to see a big fish like this released and I hope people will take it into consideration. The guy who caught the salmon and his friends saved this strain of salmon from extinction back in the 60’s and 70’s I owe them my deepest respect (but I hope to be able to film them releasing a salmon of this size some day ;-)).
@Kineticfishing I read the video description again. You say that because the person that caught this fish has worked hard in the past to reestablish the salmon population in this river, he 'deserves' to kill the fish. I couldn't disagree more. It is this sense of greed and entitlement that has our wild stocks in such poor shape. Those of us who work the hardest to save our wild salmon wouldn't even consider killing a fish (much less a big breeder)! Our salmon need our help!
Yes it would be a fantastic gesture to release a salmon like this. I hope to get the chance once ;)
Still I have to respect the choice of the guy who caught the fish. He and his freinds are the ones who saved the salmon in the river from near extintion. Now a days the salmon population is growing strong and limits of 1 fish per angler per year as well as a total limit to make sure the salmon population keeps growing.
beuty of a fish ,anglers choice though.
