It's a . . . bit hasty, yes? It seems so rushed; one might find it a bit hard to *enjoy* the piece as the composer intended. Ein bisschen langsam, bitte.
Get over it! This is Crispian Steele-Perkins...if he doesn't know what he is doing I don't know who does! I would love to hear you play it better...!!
Also, when played slower it is soooooooo boring! A good paced version just the right length!
organ sounded just right in the accoustics of this venue considering "real" trumpet. Too rushed? Well that's really up to the perfomer and the audience at any given moment surely. No composer can really dictate a speed for all eternity - s/he can only ever stipulate a preference - otherwise there would never be any room for artistic expression. BTW, this was too fast for my personal pfreference but I applaud the performance, the performers and the instruments!
I often think that tempo is a function of the surroundings. This is taking it at a jolly lick which is great fun and joyous here. In the ponderous reverberation of a large cathedral it would get lost at this speed.
Lovely top end note by the way!
This arrangement is very beautiful but, no criticism, it is trite compared to the grandeur of the full trumpet chorus in the arrangement that Mary Pratt Molinier plays on the organ at Albi Cathedral. It's interesting to compare.
Obviously tempo is function of the surrounding, like every musician knows; but the difference between Allegro, Presto and Prestissimo must remain; in this case it is sadly obvious that the performers misunderstood what the composer wrote, or, worse, that the performers made the choice to betray the composer's intentions in order to make a show of virtuosity.
Yes. It's really worth going to hear the organs at Albi and St Maximin as the way in which this genre of music is played on that genre of instrument, for which it was written, is shocking.
No trumpet solo. French organs for which this was written can only be played with the tune as a fanfare with a battery of trumpet stops. Much grander. The only alternative is indicated perhaps as a "Duo" or "Dialogue" "des trompettes et la cromorne".
Reeds could not be played against flues - no wind.
What difference does it make whether the solo part is done on the organ or trumpet as far as what tempo it should be played at? Its the same piece either way. I'm undecided on whether this is the best tempo, but I'm an organist and not seeing how it matters (as far as tempo) that the real trumpet is playing the trumpet part.
The reality is that this is not a piece with a solo part at all: the French organs for which this was written can only be played with the tune as a fanfare with a battery of trumpet stops. Much grander.
This is no criticism of the performer, merely of the general misunderstanding of this type of music for the past century.
It's worth going to Albi cathedral or St Maximin to hear those organs playing this genre of music in the style in which it was intended.
Tempo was fine- check for string players perforning the same piece - they dont get criticised on tempo. The ornamentation would be less effective if slower.
I am gently but repeatedly kicking myself for not having found (earlier) this and other videos of Steele-Perkins in action. Then again, I've heard with gratitude his playing on a third of the discs I own, so it's not as if I've missed hearing much. Pleasant surprise to see his responses, too.
Interesting point about "Inegale" If you do the whole piece like that it gets rhythmically boring but looser rhythm if effective I agree. I've tried this tune all ways and on this occasion did it "straight". There's another version with piano on DueTrombe.
Great job but it sounds rushed as though someone had to catch a plane in 5 minutes, maybe this is the correct tempo but I've heard it played much slower and liked it better at the slower tempo.
The tempo is too fast. Good playing,

What short of TE DEUM is this!!!
The title only should make the performer play it majestically and grandly.
This Te Deum was loosing its train :-P
