  • the problem with Fleming,is she very often brakes the line when she" interprets" ,she pulls certain words disturbing the legato,something Renata never does. as far as i know,Fleming only does this with Italian opera.She gives straus and schubert the line they deserve but gulps andthrets through say the ave maria in ottelo.something tebaldi would never do.

  • Let me be frank... when I first Tebaldi's Mimi, I thought it was the best, but, after I began to understand the text, story, etc. a little better, whenever I hear Tebaldi sing Mimi, I can't be convinced that she's a nice, unambitious 20-year-old girl. Quite honestly, I prefer de los Angeles's, Freni's, and Callas's (for her supreme analytical interpretation).

  • Her vibrato sounds heavy... I prefer Callas' version of this aria... Callas vibrato sounds more natural.

  • People, people!!!! What's the problem? You're fighting about Freni and Tebaldi? The 2 greatest italian soprano of our time??? Both divine, both different, and we are lucky to have them. If you want to argue, then argue about horrible, offensive, present day singers like Fleming, Gheorghiu, and the rest. Brava Renata, Brava Mirella !!!!

    You must have either a hearing system that we, mortals, were not blessed with, or so vast and deep an encyclopedic musical culture that you climb to heights of perception denied to the mere music lover. Whatever the case, you would be doing great service to the common man by pointing out the irreparable faults of, say Gheorghiu, so that we may knowingly avoid the pitfall of falling in love with her beautiful voice. Teach us, please!

  • I heard both live. Orbazzono let me tell you that Tebaldi was more exiting than Freni, until 1960 ,then she indeed had problems with the aguti and also the voice became harsher. But in the theater I never heard such a full-bodied clear sound again from anyone, and I have seen them all

    Rich in tone and clarity, Freni is not as good as Tebaldi. Tebaldi's voice is more natural and powerful.

Che Renata Tebaldi avesse in certi ruoli difficoltà tecniche è palese, e non sono il solo a dirlo. Ascolti la sua Tosca (peraltro piena di gridacci veristi) e sarà chiaro anche a lei.
