Love this music...expect its because I'm a mad crazy NEW ORLEANS jazz fan...I'm off to investigate, learn and listen to lots more of this wonderful music. Thanks for posting...DWM.England.UK.
I remember clocking out at the shipyard and half the men speaking French. Once, mother-in-law cloud barely speak English now she claims not to remember French. The family reunion had its own Cajon fais-do-do now its a DJ. I remember the bouchere. We would kill the cochon, make head cheese, blood sausage, cracklin, wrap the meat, a big party all helped and shared in.
But Cajon is dying now.
Son de mauvaise, de triste de triste.
Les jeunes qui veulent être noirs, pas Cajon. My kid too.
i know,i think you have me mixed up with molody615199999 below my first comment,i come from northern maine where we are mostly acadien. if fact i speak more french than english
My name is Morris Goldstein. I live in Brooklyn, New York. I'm proud to be Cajun. That song brings back old memories, especially of my bar mitzvah when Steve Riley played all that Cajun music. My great-grandparents came to Brooklyn when they were run out of Nova Scotia and settled on Louisiana Avenue (how about that?). I love crawfish and we used to catch them in the ditches and eat them. Passe-moi une autre bière froide Ambrose
i saw a really good film about em on folkstreamdotnet...it was really good, i sat in my rocking chair with my beer and a bottle of 30 year old rum and watched it. reminded me of when i was young and all my aunts and uncles and my grandma used to play and sing and drink all night long
i am proud of my cajun blood my grand ma was fron lafaett la she was a full bleed cajun and grand pa was indian thes were my great grand parents my grand pa was half and my dad is 8th i thank i am a qurter i thank and i cant spell worth a darn
I have cajun blood my mom was born in mamou both sides of my family speak french but my dads not cajun he use to live in french guiana though i need to go back to acaidia to learn the language tho
Yes Scrambler390 could you please give me the English translation of the song? I love it but have no idea what they are saying.
Also does anyone have a video of the performance of Dewey and Christine Balfa from the movie "The Big Easy"? Would love to see it. I remember seeing the movie and liked it a lot but I don't remember that part of it.
Thanks for adding them that helped alot. Wow! After reading over the lyrics I see this really is a sad song. I figured it was just by the way it was sung and played but now I see why. Thanks again.
I agree I like this song too. I have that cd of "Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Music volume 1 and 2" and it's my favorite one. I play it in my car everyday. I don't care what anyone else thinks, I love Cajun music so much. I don't speak French but I just know it's a beautiful song.
I agree with you 100% ,Kll510, I can't believe sometimes that Dewey drove a school bus and sold furniture. He was a master of music and his voice was beautiful. Moves me to tears often.
Same here. My maternal family is cajun. My mom married a Persian, so even though I have roots to two fabulous cultures, I never learned the language of either. I still remember, though, growing up and visiting my family in New Orleans. My grandfather and his brothers used to play these old cajun songs all the time. I don't understand a word, but I absolutely love the music. When I'm homesick for New Orleans, I have a few drinks and play this music.
The most beautifully sad Cajun song ever written, IMO. Incredible...no matter how many times I hear it. So many people miss you, Dewey.
I recommend highly Horace Trahan's cover version of this on the startling "Ossun Blues," Swallow Records,'96. It has an accordion solo that is wonderful.
