  • I gotta stop bashing this man. It's obvious he hasn't fully recovered from the large doses of LSD he's been taking all his life...

  • This cat is a great player .Whether you like his story or not is another matter right.

Even here though it's all a money thing.Don't talk PLAY.

The greatest saxophones in the world currently are SBA, (10m,adusted)A chu if you can get round it King .Super20.and finally mk6. In that order.

The horn he has there is ok for new but ask any serious player to give totally honest opinion, they will just about all come up with the list Iv'e stated.

    Too much talk PLAY.

  • Does the silver (as it is specially mat) still oxidate, and if it does, does it look pretty instead of shitty on normal Silver?

  • "you gotta hold your horn man. If you do that, you'll end up holding your notes too... and you're notes get bigger. and you'll start to feel the notes you're playing." moral of the story: play without a neck strap man!

  • @bt017 You ever tried supporting on a middle C Sharp on a tenor with only one thumb??? Good luck with that.

  • @simonmountney No, no, no man. You got it all wrong! It's all Coltrane. See? That's the real secret to playing giant steps and "In the Mood." You gotta take your neck strap off and play your high C#'s by under over blowing a low Bb. See? That's what Lovano is getting at. Only when you can make your neck strap form a perfect a "U" shape will you REALIZE man. REALIZE. You dig? You gotta play the sunset. The letter U. THAT is it. Plus, you gotta levitate. levitation man. It's the key.

  • This guy plays like a monster, but when he is talking is just a lot of stories that goes to nowhere. I had a teacher like him some years ago and I quit his classes because it was full of shit. They talk, talk and you learn nothing. Some people are better playing than having a conversation and that's de Joe Lovano's case. I prefer buy his albuns than his "masterclasses". You can learn more listen to his music.

  • I hear note, good notes. I hear phrases clear and strong. what I don't hear is any music from this guy. never did ...

  • All you mothafuckers dissing Lovano. This man's sound reminisces of the older players yet his vocabulary spans from the established bebop language to a more angular, contemporary color; he has the greatest respect for the men who conceived this art, (more than I can say for some of my colleagues who follow only the brand new cats); he's a terrific doubler; he has taught some of today's top players. He may seem a little loose while discussing tone, technique, etc but that's the way he is, man

  • well, that was disappointing....

  • this guy asks like he knows what the fuck hes talking about i dont think he really does.

  • A little bit disappointed. He acts as a salesman of saxophone rather than teaching.IMHO, he stills sound like himself whatever horn he uses

  • Great video!

  • He talks too much and really not teaches anything. Everybody is like "OK, so?....how do I play that?"

This guy maybe is very good as a player, but not as a teacher.

  • He sounds just like Tim Price.

  • fight, fight fight!

  • This whole argument is retarded, get a life people.

  • ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • I´ve been trying to play with the strap very loose and it´s so hard. You have to be very strong and its hard to relax your right hand. I play the a Reference 54 alto sax.

  • don't play with a loose strap if you cant relax your hand. sit or stand with your head looking straight forward. now adjust your strap and the angle of the neck piece so the mouthpiece comes naturally into your mouth at the right position. keep your shoulders and every thing else relaxed! that is the key!

  • Thank you

  • this ain't boring. he makes some very insightful points

and he must be pretty strong to hold a tenor without a strap while playing that well

  • What's so funny is that I've played with Joe and he told me himself that he prefers his Silver Selmer Balanced Action instead of this horn lol. I play on a Silver Mark VI he sad he would even play my horn instead of that Borgani so it's so funny to me.

  • So why Joe lovano plays a Borgani?

  • cause he get's paid to. But his preference is his Selmer... he told me himself.

  • I believe so! At 2.09m he forgot the name of the brand....

  • Shutup dude. People are obsessed with Selmer because of the vintage horns. The modern horns aren't as good for a few reasons.

    1. they aren't FULLY handmade excluding horns like borgani

    2. they need time to age and deteriorate for a better "ring"

Lovano is not stupid enough to say he doesn't love his endorsement. he could be heavily sued by breach of contract. Lovano played a Conn before anyways

I like old Selmer, great sound, terrible intonation. modern ones are good intonation lesser sound:(

  • oh and i forgot to add he's never played a selmer you moron. he probably dislikes them considering he's NEVER played one!

  • I wasn't going to forgive you for your ignorance but you know what F that. You really don't know what the hell you're talking about. Lovano played selmers before retard. He played a Mark IV and Balanced actions when playing with the Vanguard Band. There are SEVERAL videos here of him playing with John Scofield using a Balanced action. Further more FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCE he played a Silver Balanced Action IN MY FACE! While he was endorsed by Borgani. Don't talk about what you don't know about.

  • Sorry to add my two cents lol But do you Even Know why a Mark Six Resonates More?!? because you talk big

  • sorry typo Mark "VI", How do I know these things? Because I have studied with the man myself and he has taught at my school. AKA hands on experience. He prefers old selmers... of course he wouldn't say that s#@$ on camera since he is endorsed. Who would? But the truth is the truth. Vintage horns offer the best personality. Modern players know Redman, Branford, Garrett, Brecker, Ravi, Potter, Turner, Shamus, AND Lovano... THE FUCKING LIST GOES ON AND ON. It's even more deceased players that knew

  • K :D this comment is better.

I talked to Jay Thomas on the issue of modern vs vintage, he claims that Yanagisawa and Borgani have the same vintage sound with great intonation but don't have the same ring. He told me the actual deterioration of the horn and breaking down of the brass improves resonance. When he bought his Mark VI new, he said it was like a modern horn haha!

  • That's the reason why vintage IS better. "the ring and resonance". Those horns resonate more. No way you're going to make me believe that a modern horn sounds and resonates like a vintage horn. Jay Who? I look to people like kenny garrett, mark turner, michael brecker, joshua redman, branford marsalis, ravi coltrane, chris potter etc. who all play on vintage selmers... INCLUDING Joe Lovano... for their claims over this guy you're talking about... no offense.

  • yeah i was agreeing with you haha :)

yes jay isn't as famous as these guys (still famous though, he tours in japan mostly) but I consider him as good as any of the "big" guys, maybe even better, I can send you a link to him playing trumpet later and tenor sax

  • you are an idiot.

Before he was playing Borgani in the 90's he played on a Silver SBA. He STILL Plays it- I saw him with Hank Jones last April and he played it.

Go shed, you don't belong on here

  • yes, sorry for my innacurracy to my statement, he never played a selmer as a MAIN horn. his SBA is a backup horn. please, I have a feeling you play a selmer so you're offended, but this video was not posted to talk about what horn he played. in all honesty, horn has little to do with sound. I love an old chinese made horn I had. Its all about mouthpiece, reed, player.

  • I'd have to agree. Although you can't completely disregard the horn; it does make a difference. But the mouthpiece and reed play a much bigger role. ;)

  • @standrick

probably because he's a borgani endorser

  • He talking 7min of 8,5 and most rubbish, sax is not better than other modern products and thanks for showing this. One guy(holosax?) plays better sound and feeling on Barg with DG mpc on youtube. I´m the old sax man, do not believe in new made and this video show me the real things, rubbish talks about "10 necks" it´s cheap commercials ,1700-2000$ Martin The Tenor, Big B or M10 with DG mpc are better then 5000$ Bargani, we talk not about MKvi or Super 2o before 60-th , they have the "It".

  • Boring and sax is not better then other modern saxophones

  • great upload- thanks!!!!

  • Snxxxx, Zzzzz... wake me up when this guy finishes. A technical wizard and a musical bore. Sorry.

  • that was directed at catandpiddle by the way...

  • 5 stars!

  • also helps if you have a giant abdomen, with what set up

lovano plays. big bore and big opening.

joe henderson is tiny compared to lovano but has a different physical approach to his sound which is also wonderful. henderson uses the selmer classical piece and relies on the mic. i like hendersons sound as much as lovanos

  • joe henderson was 6'5" , not "tiny"

  • Really? He definitely looks like a little guy

  • Henderson was defintetly NOT 6'5...much smaller.

  • a ramble for sure. but honest and based on his inpressions, subjective

he's a great player speaking from HIS heart.

    but,

    AT 4:22

    HE MAKES MORE SCIENTIFIC COMMENTS.

the bore IS WIDER THAN A MK VI

  • What a wanker.

  • If you were getting a free horn youd bullshit all day long like lovano ibet he has a selmer 6 stored away ,borgs are nasty tried them and wouldent part with the cash buy a yammy custom or somthing of that ilk reliable ...yts62 owner

  • VI's are JUST SAXOPHONES. No horn has anything over another one. It's all about preference. He prefers Borgani. Obviously you don't.

  • yes they do old horns arnt made from alloy they are propper brass ,that makes a whole load of dif you cnt reproduce that sound the older conns martins and selmers had ,even the ref 54 dosnt match up to a 6 and thats the same company ,i take it you are adding those fake chinese bendy horns in your comment as all horns are the same uh

  • It's all Gimmicks. a good horn is a good horn. You'll get different tone qualities from different horns. What is worse to you will be better to someone else. I can't play most Selmers cause they don't go with my sound at all. If you'd been told all this time that selmers were shitty, you'd have a negative bias towards them, even if you played them and liked them. That's how people are. There is no one horn that is right for everybody. It's the same reason there are prescription glasses.

  • I agree with you both, old horn's are more solidly built and AID you in your sound (don't give you a good sound) yet I have also tried a Borgani and was disappointed.

  • wich model did you play??

  • Conn 10m. Love it.

  • Lovano! a great player and a boring and awful speaker, buaaahhh!

not convincing at all, make me an impression from somebody I can´t trust.

  • This is basically a fucking infomercial.

  • Infomercial for what? Customizing a horn for thousands of dollars? He really didn't say much positive about the horn itself without all the customizations.

  • Obvious and Arrogant

  • Boring really.... He's obviously trying to sell the horns and I guess there's nothing wrong with that but his sound is the same in every song and frankly, his sound is technically brilliant but boring. Sends me to sleep in five minutes.

  • The horns are great... And A great player.... Maybe you just dont understand what he is doing.... Open your ears

  • lovano is an absolute master of using sound and timbre. his tone is one of the most nuanced and variable that i have ever heard. listen to the way he uses different tone colours in his ballad playing on 'i'm all for you' with hank jones. the guy is a master and if you can't hear it your not listening right.

  • i went to a lovano master-class at the royal academy of music, and he just waffles on about obvious things. i know hes a giant and a fantastic saxophone player, but he doesn't really give any good advice, he just talks about stuff really.

  • i think alot of jazz players dont realy truly think about what they actualy play all the time and he does waffle

  • must say does nothing for me.

  • what does do something for you?

  • masterclass with a true artist like lovano wont give you anything unless you reached that certain level. when technique's no longer something to discuss. it's more about the art.

  • THan Go Freakin practice

  • @JazzVideoGuy it isn't a written law that you have to like Joe Lovano's playing..

  • @markh79sax No such law

  • Informative, but what the heck, Lesters horn was all rubbers, chewinggum and sigaretpaper, but his sound was outasight. See Peter King on Birds plastic alto. The man is the sound.

  • Lovano is A Giant

  • Romanrec, "The man is the sound". You've just summed it up.

  • Great video, just with that 9 minutes, I learnt a lot of things. Thank you Mr Primack
