thats amazing whats the biggest spcies of mantis documented??? i wanna buy one train it bcome a tough mantis and fed on arger meals and then feed a giant centipede cuz im sick of those things ating th little mantises its horrible so im gonna get the mantis species a lil self esteem boost
This is a male Chinese Mantis, Tenodera Aridifolia Sinensis. The female of this species is the one most often reported as having caught things like hummingbirds, mice, etc. They are very strong, extremely aggressive, and grow up to 4 1/2" long (Males) or 6" long (Females).
Yes, very small birds will occasionally be eaten by large mantids. The Chinese Mantis is the largest, and therefore the most likely of all mantids to do so.
More often, birds eat mantids. It's just a question of size, and whether the two organisms come into close contact.
There are online pictures you can find of these eating tiny hummingbirds, and videos on YouTube showing the mantis eating mice, lizards, and snakes.
They actually make great pets. The Chinese mantis is quite docile around humans if you are patient and learn how to approach them. If they believe you are a tree, then you are a nice place to wait for food. I have hand-fed them many times. Just be careful if you want to do that... they can grab forcefully with their raptorial forelegs. In addition, the spines on those legs will easily pierce skin, and their jaws can chew holes in you really fast.
I don't know the law in Finland, but you can purchase egg-cases from pest-control agencies in the USA. Each egg-case will hatch out around 150-200 nymphs (baby mantids). Just look and see if you can buy those as pest control. If so, make sure you have a tank that's warm enough for them. Has to be around 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, with 30-40% humidity and full spectrum lighting during the day.
Baby mantids eat fruit flies, and get bigger food from then on.
And look for the Chinese Mantis. (Scientific name: Tenodera Aridifolia Sinensis) You might want a couple of small (10-20 gallon) cages so you can separate a few of them in hopes of getting an adult female.
Unfortunately, they will eat each other from the time they hatch, so there is no guarantee you will end up with many survivors by the time they reach adulthood.
You could also just catch some other really tiny food items.. or catch and kill larger insects, and gently hold the food right up to the tiny mantids' mouths immediately following the death of the larger insect. They will eat things that are placed at their mouths.. so do not let your skin get against the mouth of an adult... it's painful.
If you do use the method I just described, make sure you offer a portion of the insect with a large diversity of nutrition. They will not thrive on just meat... they must ingest the exoskeleton, chitin and organs to help their nutritional balance.
Yes, ants are very strong and fight well for their size. Some ants will even spray formic acid from their abdomens upon an attacker or victim. Other ants can sting, and all can bite fiercely with their mandibles.
Mosquitoes are only dangerous to mammals and other large creatures. A mantis will make short work of them.
i agree, usa!

食物連鎖。ライオンやトラがシマウマとか食べなければ、シマウマの数が増え過ぎて、シマウマたちが食べる草とかがなくなってしまうのと一緒。すごいバランス。

so i gotta watch 200 nymphs eat each other? fun. fruit flies are probably hard to catch, though. or get.

hm... are regular flies or ants good for nymphs?
Magzone7 3 years ago
Regular flies would be fine. Ants can kill small nymphs, so I would steer clear of those.
MaximumCat 3 years ago
even one small ant can kill it?
are mosquitoes good, or can they kill a nymph too?
Magzone7 3 years ago
Yes, ants are very strong and fight well for their size. Some ants will even spray formic acid from their abdomens upon an attacker or victim. Other ants can sting, and all can bite fiercely with their mandibles.
