If you watch the many different luge or bobsled accidents, you'll see that accidents happen in a split second and they have devastating effects.

It would be impossible to make the sport much safer than it already is, but maybe they will end up putting pads on the posts, but hitting a pad at 80mph is still going to be deadly.
