This look great mate, watched a few of your video's and this looks ideal. My only problem is the filter I have, is "noiseless" apprently, I've not set the tank up yet. How loud is will this filter be? I would buy a "silent" air pump....My tank is being set up in my bedroom. Thanks.
Looks way too heavy like all other ceramic medias it will not move in a moving bed due to its weight. I am hoping to get a new type of media which does move in a moving bed and it is ceramic but thats a few weeks away yet.
I got a question. I made one using bio balls and the media just floats at the top of the bottle. Will it become less buoyant over time as the bacteria colonize on it?
There are very few true types of 'moving bed' media. Bio balls are not a moving bed media so if they are floating now, they will always float no matter how much bacteria builds up on them.
Kaldness who manufacture K1 have so many patents protecting it, there aren't many others. I have seen a black media which looked like a direct copy of K1 but can't find it for sale anywhere - Probably got sued by Kaldness....
There is an experimental media which I'm testing for a UK company - check the video "New filter for new moving bed media" - it is not available yet.
Man yours works so perfectly. I got about... 1/4-1/3 of a 1 gallon jug with moving bed media. And 2 air stones. Half of it just stays at the top. Got my holes poked below. Got holes on top.
Whatcha think? I'm only on my first week, but at 1 time I may only have 15-20 of these flowing. The rest up top.
@psychoninja911 Never mind, as it turns out... Half of my jug had a narrow handle part, and it was disrupting the flow of the media. 1 hour later in a different jug and I already have a good flow.
The moving bed filter works more efficiently if combined with a sponge filter (to remove suspended solids from the water) as seen in the video 'best moving bed filter ever' but will remove ammonia from the water well enough without the foam attachment.
what kind of bottle is that? im thinking about making one with with a dual-foam filter from "elite" im sure you know which one i mean. also another question: what airpump do you recommend? main concern is sound as this will be in a sound sensitive environment (commonroom) great filter btw: big fan of DIY!
Its just a bottle from apple juice - I think it was Coppela juice. I tend to use these as the bottles are very tough and a good shape.
With regard to which air pump to use, unless you go ultra cheap they are all quite quiet but it is the sound of bubbles breaking the surface which makes more noise really - thats why I would tend to use an air stone instead f the water coming straight out of a pipe as the bubbles will be a bit smaller and quieter. 'Best moving bed filter ever' is best video.
Great idea and It could be substituted in a sump instead of building all the chambers for bio media. I wish i had seen this before I built my wet/dry. Unfortunately it looks like crap actually in the tank. I am a firm believer in sumps/wet drys/ and uv lights. Forget all the hang on filters and canister filters. A good sump wet/dry is usually cheaper and 100 times better. For small 10 and 20 gallon tanks I do use HOB filters but anything bigger gets a sump.
The idea of using a bottle as the housing for the media was to build a filter on the ultra cheap. Aesthetically out of the tank is better, in a sump, as you say.
So, the moving bed filter only removes the ammonia and nitrite. Would you recommend me also using static media to also filter the out the debris? My questio is whether or not for a 50 gallon tank, if I can only use the moving bed filter.
The ideal scenario would be for the water to be sucked through a foam filter and then go through the K1 moving bed. I will construct one very shortly and post the video. You could use only the moving bed filter but the water may not be as clear as if there was a K1 foam combo.
There is no reason why you couldn't use alfagrog (looks like lava rock) as it has a massive surface area. It wouldn't move but the by having well oxygenated water rushing over it, it would support alot of beneficial bacteria.
There is an undergravel filter in this tank. The moving bed filter is just in there to mature while we set our new tnks up, then it is going into a discus tank. Once it is mature (which takes about 3 months) it would filter the tank by itself.
I am currently working on a filter which has an initial foam stage followed by a moving bed - I will post to my channel when finished.
Bottle size doesn't matter - this one is actually meant for a discus tank which hasn't been set up yet so its too big for this tank. I'll do a short video each week until it is mature.

Once the media is moving freely after 2-3 weeks you could add an airstone to the pipe and that would reduce the noise to no more than an airstone.
pondguru 1 week ago
@pondguru thanks mate, I'll just have to wear ear plugs for the first few weeks, will be worth it though.
Dayne1988uk 1 week ago
Instead of the K1, could I say, use the ceramic objects inside an "AquaClear BioMax Insert"? Give it a google and you'll see what Im talking about.

I've made my own moving bed filter with K1, but most of the K1 stays at the top and does move much. Will it begin to move over time?
AndehX 1 month ago
It will move eventually but if you can direct the air flow up one side of the bottle it may help to cycle the media a bit better.

is there any where in america i can buy this media

It seems to have passed america by. I supply worldwide - see link in video description.

Thanks for the help!

is this kind of filter for looks, or does it keep an aquarium clean? thanks!
Shareallicu3 6 months ago
It removes pollutants very quickly and with the newer design (see ' Best aquarium miving bed filter ever' video) will also keep water clear.

psychoninja911 10 months ago
Great, man. As the media matures you will be able to add more until you get a chugging sort of motion with lots more media than will move initially.
pondguru 10 months ago
looks a little bulky in the tank. you thought about running it external?
prebirth91 11 months ago
This particular design won't work external. It doesn't actually need to be as big as it is in this tank.
pondguru 11 months ago
@pondguru fair enough
prebirth91 11 months ago
i think small pieces of straw would work too.
iownudie108 1 year ago
You would think so, yes. But from the feedback, no.
Straws don't have the neutral buoyancy essential for moving bed filters like this.
pondguru 1 year ago
Only one filter like this is okay? Do we need anymore?

@pondguru so this is a 10ish gallon tank with only the bed filter right?
or is there some canister or overhang filter behind the tank

@pondguru even larger tanks like 50 gallons?! holy cow
so like powerhead on the right and the filter on the left would be the ultimate combo then
iamnub672 1 year ago
A good combo is one of the moving bed filters fitted to the uplift of an under gravel system, driven by air.

@pondguru I actually am using lava rock not to much combined with chopped up air tubing which flows around freely its rather an experiment....

Yes. There aren't many in at present but the filter is just in there until we get the new discus tank set up then its going in there ready matured.
