Apparently Matt is the fruit of an underground scientific experiment. DNA was taken from John Bonham, Keith Moon and Stewart Copeland to create a powerful yet precise and creative hybrid drummer. They had no idea he would become the beast he became which is why everyone connected with the experiment has been killed so as to ensure silence.
I thought Jack Irons did a pretty sweet job in pearl jam, but Matt is definitely one of my fave ever drummers. Hes right up there with Jimmy Chamberlin and Lucius Borich.
I've been drumming for about 15 years and, although I enjoy listening to his drumming, Jack Irons doesn't display much technical difficulty or - more importantly - much creativity in his playing. In my opinion, of course.
Jimmy Chamberlin is an incredible drummer, as are Dave Abbruzzese and Matt Cameron.
I'm glad for the Pearl Jam albums that Jack Irons was on, but I don't think that his playing would have been the best for the other Pearl Jam albums.
See, Dave Krusen was the official first PJ drummer, but Matt Cameron did the drums for the demos when they were still called Mookie Blaylock.
When Dave Krusen recorded the drums for Ten, he mostly just played what Matt Cameron had played in the demos. So you can thank Matt Cameron for the style of drums on Ten.
Yeah, Dave Abbruzzese was awesome on that re-recording of Even Flow.
But before he became part of the band, Matt Chamberlain joined Pearl Jam for about two minutes and then left to join the Saturday Night Live band. The only recording he did was the live recording of Alive on the Japanese version of Ten. Then they got Dave Abbruzzese. (Then Jack Irons, then Matt Cameron.)
yeah, a great point, btw, where did you see that abbruzzese played on the record? (i thought it came out in 2003, which wouldve been during matt's tenure, but of course i could be wrong and it couldve been recorded during abbruzzeses time)
Are you referring to the Even Flow re-record? They re-recorded it for the music video in (I believe) 1992, and Dave Abbruzzese was in Pearl Jam.
I'm not sure what you mean about 2003. When PJ released Lost Dogs (rarities/b-sides) and their best of, I know they re-recorded some older tracks but Even Flow wasn't one of them.
There are two main recordings of Even Flow. The original from Ten by Dave Krusen and the re-record they did for the Even Flow video a year or two later with Dave Abbruzzese.
I thought the Even Flow re-record was done in 2003 for the Rearviewmirror greatest hits album-it was my first time hearing it as i do not usually watch music videos
When Dave Abbruzzese joined the band in the early 90's they re-recorded Evenflow. It was played on the radio, and is also the one in the video. It has a lot more energy to it, and IMO as drummer of 25 years, Abbruzzese's version blows away Krusen's, Iron's and Cameron's. All the other versions were very flat, including how it is played today. With Abbruzzese, it was absolutely explosive.
dave abbruzzese was the best drummer pearl jam had, suited the music perfectly, great feel to his playing, best drummer ever??? dave weckel is in the top 5 anyway!
his work with sound garden for me was absolutely stunning. Not a lot that was too complicated (maybe face pollution which is also brilliant) but his fills were so unique and powerful. Definitely one of the most underrated rock drummers going round
All so true, Matt is sometimes under-rated by idiots that think you have to put on a fireworks display to be a good drummer, his drum solo at Reading 06 and on the new Pearl Jam DVD Imagine in Cornice are awesome.
Timing of a perfectionist, I would recommend him to anyone starting to play the drums
Yep, same here. him and Bill Ward are my faves. Their styles are so powerful and unique. I mean, Peart is technical and all that, but the best drummers come from the small kit. smaller the drum kit, the bigger the talent.
for those who asked, Matt Cameron was playing with another drummer when this track was recorded. For obvious reasons, we decided to keep the camera on Matt.
Matt Cameron is an incredible drummer. I'd just love to see him play in a band like Soundgarden again. I love Pearl Jam, but feel he'll never get a use for his full potential in that band. They just play a too conventional type of music...
