@MarenAnne66 She claims to, but it's really because she feels so ashamed of her past that she wishes to hide the secret of herself from the world, just encase there was gossip or scandal going about.
I can not believe that the part in which she grows the most is going to fit in one episode. There most be another. My favorite parts of Jane Eyre stripped to fit one episode. How sad.
It's very much like Twilight that the girl should run off and almost kill herself because her man can't be with her. I hope she continues and makes a new life for herself in the meantime (because we know they'll get together eventually), otherwise she'd be as idiotic as Bella Swann! (le vomit).
What is it with the Brontes and moorelands? HEATHCLIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFE ITS MEEE CATHEEEEY I'VE COME HOOOOOOOME! Jane: Mr Rochester Ima sleep on this rock till I or your wife dies, laterz.
what i love the most about classic romances is how the lightest touch rather its an inncoent brush on the shoulder or taking the womans hand when helping her in the carriage could mean so much. in those days touching was a no no and most of the time the woman wore gloves so when they do finally have that skin to skin contact no matter how innocent it is, it holds so much meaning and sparks. something that you can't get nowadays sadly.
Feels like a scene from an alien abduction. One minute she's in the house and the next she is on her own, no clothes or possessions, waking up under a big rock in the middle of nowhere. Hmmm .... smthg is missing.
Mary and Diana are so wonderful in the book - they're rather chatty here, even though she's such an invalid.. I can't believe they're teasing this poor stranger about her "back story." Also, in the book, she refrains from talking about who she is and her experiences because she knew Rochester would try to find her, which she wanted to avoid.
okay... am I missing something because this episode just skipped her running away from Mr. Rochester's place. If I wasn't reading the book I would never known she had ran away and everything. Strange that they totally cut that scene.
How come in all these novels of bronte and jane austen they get suddenly sicky by walking in the rain??? Btw byronic heroes....where are you nowadays?
@wingeyes i suppose people's immune system was not as good in those days. the medication was not that good, the houses cold, the nutrition maybe not so full of vitamins. it may have been the small things that made the difference to today. besides, houses of that size are cold anyway, the fires are lit only in fall and summers can be cold, the windows are letting cold air in even when closed. so you are feeling cold most of the times anyway. not the best conditions to begin with.

It's such fun to hear words from classic german litterature amongst a sea of english language! You guys from the island do write very good books and do produce very good films!!!
St John could have been the most gorgeous man in the world, but the point is that Jane DOESN'T LOVE HIM. She loves Mr Rochester. If you love someone, there could be a million more handsome people and it doesn't matter, you don't even look at them. The point is that Jane doesn't love St. John, and he doesn't love her. It would be a purely utilitarian marriage.
Why don't they just stick to the book? Why do they always have to make up stupid things? The book is always better... I hate how they think they are smarter than the author!!
@kamiikam Me too!!!! You would think that if they stuck to the book, they'd get better reviews as well! All of the movies like that - with good acting, too, of course - got excellent reviews! Grr...It makes me really mad... ;)
@TheFloatingBox I think they made him more homely so that modern shallow audiences would still believe she would pick Rochester over him lol. But that is just my personal opinion.
@Britin101 That does make sense..but wouldn't you think it would be more romantic if she came across this handsome, amazing man, and still - despite the opportunity - chose Rochester instead.
@JadeTigerGem Yes, I do. Which is why I added in the "modern shallow" part. Had he been as gorgeous as he was described there would have been a ton of "Forget Rochester! I'd do him anyday!" comments like there was over Willoughby and Brandon in the 1995 Sense and Sensibility. I don't agree but honestly, when was the last time you saw an ugly (or even average really) guy as a romantic leading man? Modern audience wouldn't know romance if it slapped them in the face, all they want is sex appeal.
He says he didn't mean to deseive her but it's a lie. I think he had so little love in his life that having these true feelings astonished him. He knew that having money meant little and like today, people who have money are taken advantage of. Love can't be bought. He could have just kept her for companionship but men like to possess, to own a thing. Maybe women aren't so different but men in this time were the controlers of the world. He'd gotten away with people not knowing of his wife.
In the book he says he meant to keep the secret away from the governess, fearing Adele would never have a governess to stay otherwise. Then the lie was between them from the start.
But of course that is no excuse. An honest man would have let her know at an early state or stayed clear. He dared not tell her since he needed her so desperately.
But I also think it is kind of self-delusion. He could not bear it and he could not bear her to know.
@MsSilentia It's one bad thing never having read the book. I will do. And I agree, he was desperate and tired I think. Tired of seeing the world for what it is and finding nothing of value except her. The more he got to know her the more fasinated he was with her. It reminds me of a line in the first Twilight book, "but the longer I got to know you the more fasinating you were to me." Something like that. Anyway, Rochester seems like that. Finally finding someone he respects and wants.
@Songsmirth This show is very nice and is also very refreshing. They did a good job in challenging a lot of missunderstandings about the novel. I believe Brontë herself would have liked it.
But the novel is more complicated. It has many layers within it and gives room for many interpretations. I believe you will have a good time exploring it.
I think it was considered incautious, and therefore improper for a woman to advertise. A lady should be feminine and be sheltered :)
As for the amnesia. In the book she did not claim amnesia. She only refused to tell her real name. But here I believe it is meant as a temporary psychotic amnesia. She seems to be much more traumatized in this adaption. I know some people have a problem with that but I like it.

@DragonHeart613 This is my favorite. I've seen them all. :)/ I have a question and I don't mean to be mean. Why do you capitalize the first letter of every word? I'm seeing it in some posts and I don't understand. Makes it harder to read and is confusing. Just asking. :)
@lsuchik93 The book spends quite awhile on her journey away from Thornfield. She did spend a couple days on the moors, and went into a little town to find work but was cast away. She finally walked through the moors to a little house at night, was turned away by Hannah, but St. John arrived and told her admit Jane.
WTF!!??? They skipped when she leaves and when Mr. Rochester practically breaks down? Begging and weeping for her to stay?? WTF??!! that was the most emotional scene in the book for Mr. Rochester D:
Its so annoying that adaptations of books into films are always criticized because really its 'BASED' on the novel for a reason! I think the BBC usually does a good job of re-interpreting novels for a modern audiences and does so here by translating Bronte's world for us in the 21st century while still keeping the spirit of the original novel.

I think the BBC usually does a good job of re-interpreting this novel for a modern audience and translating Bronte's world for us in the 21st century while still keeping the spirit of the original novel.
@MsVictoria881 in the book he was extremely handsome, like a foil to the "ugly" Mr. Rochester.... again Brontê is showing the difference between outside appearance and inside feeling...st John is a cold heartless person
@EmmaVal yea..but i mean..if she stayed there she'd be miserable seeing the man she loved and not being with him and if she ran away with him...there will always be something in the back of her mind knowing that he has a wife and she ruined that girls (thought mental) life...to put it simply if goes against her morals
They got the amazing speech and story from Mr.Rochester correct in the Timothy Dalton version, but everything else about that was so dull. This version while not entirely perfect in accordance to the book, is still a delicious adaptation, and still very faithful.
I forgot which year it was, bubt maybe it was 1996 or something...The adaptation was horrible, but St.John was the only one who was perfect as he was in the book.
i loved that speech she made to Rochester... how moral and laws are for such times as these, when body and soul rise mutinously against it. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful speech made in the book. Why did they have to leave it out? However, since I'm a teen, I can't entirely hate the bed scene.
St.John was supposed to be devastatingly handsome (and blond) which he isn't here, in contrast to the "ugly" Mr. Rochester.. this occults one of the themes of the book which is that love is not dependant on physical attractiveness... if not, Jane would have married St. John, and Rochester, Blanche Ingram....
I still prefer Timothy Dalton's 1983 version because he makes a better Rochester and there was a darkness about it but agree that the music and cinematography in this version is feature-film like. Also I like the way they did the edits here through the flashbacks of how she ended up in the moors.
@TwilightHostGirl .. I think Jane has amnesia because of all the things that have gone on before she leaves... It's almost like a mini break-down, she shuts down and remembers nothing because it is too painful.. I love this version of Jane Eyre it is dark and brooding just like Mr Rochester... And Ruth Wilson is a fantastic Jane... :0)x
HEEEY!! I wanted to see them fight!! How dare they cutt it out!! I wanted Violance!!!
I wanted to see the pitiful part where he throws himself on the couch and crys "Jane Jane Jane" and the part where he gets in her face and holds her hands down and says "you know what I want, give it too me, give it too me now!" I wanted to laugh at the sillyness of it. O well
Yes I was looking for that part of the book and I hate that part was cute out it really made the movie. But this movie here is one of the best ones that was made i could look at it over and over again. but i would have love to see him running behind her as she left him a very high point in the other movie dont u think.
@JaCoBlUvEr7 in the book she runs away from Thornfield to look for somewhere else to live and find a job, but she doesn't take anything with her. she runs away on that very night of the wedding. and that's where the movie picks up after she has left her home and is at unknown place to her.
argh i really wish we had seen the scene where she tells Mr. Rochester she must go and he begs her to stay...one of the best scenes in the book and they cut it :(
still this is one of the best versions of jane eyre out there
I dont really understand what is happening since I've never read the book ... so she left Mr. Rochester and wandered with no food/resources.. and now, she lost her memory?? Did she really or is she lying in order to hide from Mr. Rochester????????????
@lilivey89 In the book i think she falls ill with a fever from wandering and thats why she seems to have lost her memory, or maybe she's just broken and unhappy and it's too painfull for her to think about.
its been years since i read the book the 2nd time--but from what i remember she did NOT have amnesia-but she purposely did not give out her background info--in a way, she was protecting rochester--and i think she was also in denial--like the pain of her heartbreak would go away if she didn't acknowledge it b/c she couldn't do anything about it
Anyone whose name is spelled "St. John" but pronounced "Sinjin" and has such a rude hairstyle, gotta have issues....

Why does she keep her hair like that?
It is the only thing that makes her ugly, but I suppose that Jane was very plain.

I think this adaptation is really good,
Its so annoying that adaptations of books into films are always criticized because really its 'BASED' on the novel for a reason! I think the BBC usually does a good job of re-interpreting novels for a modern audiences and does so here by translating Bronte's world for us in the 21st century while still keeping the spirit of the original novel.

I think St John is good looking!

@MsVictoria881 in the book he was extremely handsome, like a foil to the "ugly" Mr. Rochester.... again Brontê is showing the difference between outside appearance and inside feeling...st John is a cold heartless person

I am annoyed that she left Thornfied. She could have been happy.
EmmaVal 1 year ago
@EmmaVal yea..but i mean..if she stayed there she'd be miserable seeing the man she loved and not being with him and if she ran away with him...there will always be something in the back of her mind knowing that he has a wife and she ruined that girls (thought mental) life...to put it simply if goes against her morals
chichimonkixpikachu 1 year ago
@EmmaVal If she stayed she would be the mistress to Mr Rochester.
She could not be happy with herself knowing that.

They got the amazing speech and story from Mr.Rochester correct in the Timothy Dalton version, but everything else about that was so dull. This version while not entirely perfect in accordance to the book, is still a delicious adaptation, and still very faithful.
I forgot which year it was, bubt maybe it was 1996 or something...The adaptation was horrible, but St.John was the only one who was perfect as he was in the book.
lavenderblossom 1 year ago
i loved that speech she made to Rochester... how moral and laws are for such times as these, when body and soul rise mutinously against it. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful speech made in the book. Why did they have to leave it out? However, since I'm a teen, I can't entirely hate the bed scene.

St John isn't that bad! Before he came on I was imagining something far worse from the comments. Although, NOT at all what I imagined from the novel.

Can't believe they skipped Rochester sleeping at her door (or did I imagine that 8D)

St.John was supposed to be devastatingly handsome (and blond) which he isn't here, in contrast to the "ugly" Mr. Rochester.. this occults one of the themes of the book which is that love is not dependant on physical attractiveness... if not, Jane would have married St. John, and Rochester, Blanche Ingram....
anisete46 1 year ago 2
I still prefer Timothy Dalton's 1983 version because he makes a better Rochester and there was a darkness about it but agree that the music and cinematography in this version is feature-film like. Also I like the way they did the edits here through the flashbacks of how she ended up in the moors.
TheLMAOChannel 1 year ago
the 1983 one is waay better...timothy dalton is a hot MR. ROCHESTER.
mhm. indeed....
this one doesnt really give you the 1800's version...
and it goes by too fast.
entertaining though. :)

Wait- does she honestly not remember who she is, or is she just trying to forget?
TwilightHostGirl 1 year ago
@TwilightHostGirl she is doing it so no one asks her questions
mariaeg123 1 year ago

Even though she ends up with Mr. Rochester, St. John still throws a nice twist into the story. He's not bad on the eyes. :)
muddysneakers 1 year ago
wait, i am confused, how did she get all the way out there?
JaCoBlUvEr7 1 year ago
@JaCoBlUvEr7 in the book she runs away from Thornfield to look for somewhere else to live and find a job, but she doesn't take anything with her. she runs away on that very night of the wedding. and that's where the movie picks up after she has left her home and is at unknown place to her.

It is a bit different in this adaptions. She just seems to wander about, to traumatized to even try to meet other people.

I dont really understand what is happening since I've never read the book ... so she left Mr. Rochester and wandered with no food/resources.. and now, she lost her memory?? Did she really or is she lying in order to hide from Mr. Rochester????????????
lilivey89 1 year ago
@lilivey89 In the book i think she falls ill with a fever from wandering and thats why she seems to have lost her memory, or maybe she's just broken and unhappy and it's too painfull for her to think about.

This isn't the way she meets St. John! How bad, oh well I suppose I'll have to live with it =)

its been years since i read the book the 2nd time--but from what i remember she did NOT have amnesia-but she purposely did not give out her background info--in a way, she was protecting rochester--and i think she was also in denial--like the pain of her heartbreak would go away if she didn't acknowledge it b/c she couldn't do anything about it
