  • When Quasimodo sees Esmarelda riding away and says to the statue "Why was I not made of stone like thee?", tears my heart out.

  • SANCTUARY!!!

  • :15- :26 Poor Gringoire ): you can cry on my shoulder cutie..

  • Most heartbreaking scene when Quasi talks to Esme

  • *Mutters* Quasimodo's the hero, not Phoebus, not Frollo, not even Gringoire.

  • Masterful actor Charles Laughton. Catch him in Hobson's Choice sometime too.

  • I'm going away so you don't have to see my ugly face while you're eating....I'm deaf, you know. It's horrible.

    Can I keep him?

  • too bad they didn't turn Laughton loose more and give him more to say. His scenes cut deep and resound. Superior acting

liked him in some old movie where he plays a schlub school teacher who finds out that neath the timid exterior he is brave and lionhearted when he decides to stand up to the Nazis.

don't remember the name but a really good film

  • This rescue scene is a must for any top 5 movie moment.

    Absolutely breathtaking, glorious.

  • @montanakiel Try ctunnel . com (without spaces of course). It allows you to watch vids unavailable in some countries

  • Superb acting.

  • Who on God's green earth could dislike this awesome film? To the pillory with them!!!

  • does anyone know how or where to find the Dr pepper Commercial with the Hunchback of Notre Dame theme? It showed around 1984

Great commercial, and a great song too, thanx

  • recently its been discovered that there was in fact a Real Hunchback around the time the book was made. he was a carver i think

  • RULE NUMBER ONE:.. NEVER LET THE 21YR OLD MAUREEN OHARA HANG, RULE NUMBER TWO:,,,SEE RULE NUMBER ONE

  • @eb641 ,she was 19 not 21 in this film and is 90 at the present time but thanks for appreciating her.

  • 1:40 That ungrateful bitch, that is how he talks of his wife's saviour?!

Esmerelda isn't much better. Quasimodo offered himself for execution in her place- no thanks; he saves her- no thanks; he brings her a bird- no thanks; he compliments her beauty while degrading himself- still no thanks!! Gah!

  • Charles Laughton is amazing in this: "I'm deaf...you would think there's nothing wrong with me..." He just has such humanity in him, with just a few lines, it;s incredible. The way he's made the bells into his friends...they just had to depend so much on acting then in movies, you could really see it.

  • Just one flaw in an otherwise perfect movie. Esmeralda has just had the iron boot treatment and now she can suddenly walk quite normally! All the bones in her foot would be in splinters, with sharp edges jutting out through the skin. Even with an amputation, she still might not survive, let alone walk. Anyway, I'll ignore that for the sake of a good movie with some real actors who are clearly doing an amazing job.

  • Interesting touch of blasphemy; Esmerelda is on the gibbet, but the framing of the scene makes it look like a cross she's on, with her head drooped in an almost Christ-like posture.

  • I think this is one of the most well-done film versions of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." It's been said to be the film closest to the novel, and the acting is fabulous. For me, this is one of the most moving scenes since it shows a lot about Quasimodo's human side that most other people he encounters do not see, and because the same people who have scorned him for the way he looks now cheer him for his heroic act of saving Esmerelda.

  • @Sisyphus27 Actually from what I hear the 1956 version comes the closest to the book.

  • witness for the prosecution is one of my faveriet movies laughton is sublieme.in all his movies

  • I saw a vault copy of this movie in a restored 1929 theater. Unless you've seen one, Its hard to realize how the old black and white films glowed when they were new. Great Film

  • Oh god this version is corny but considered a masterpiece. in my opinion, the disney version is better

  • @phantomisle That's because you're a phenomenal idiot.

  • @BorderReiver49 Sure, if that's how you feel. Of course, your opinion is meaningless. :D

  • What was it about 1939 that produced some of the greatest films of all time, in one year? This is THE BEST version of this classic story. The decision to use superb English actors like Charles Laughton and Sir Cedric Hardwicke was inspired. This is one of the "ten best" films I've ever seen in my life.

  • i remember turning a channel over to this film years ago, and it was the part when he says 'i'm not a man...i'm not a beast' and that was all i could remember of watching it. Thank you for uploading :)

  • "Look, up there! Babiiiiees! Jacqueliiiine! Gabrieeelle! Guillaaauume! Big Marieeee!" xD That was so cute!!

GAH, I love Quasimodo. I want to hug him something fierce,

  • is it just me...or does quasi have some sort of sex appeal?????!!!!!!!!!! Wow! What a guy !!!!!!! Sometimes looks ARENT everything!!!!! Ha Ha!

  • @belartful I don't know about sex appeal, but Laughton sure makes him adorable!

  • is that man real or is a effect? sorry 4 asking not trying to be mean or disrespectful.

  • @lKagomeHigurashi It's make-up. :)

  • yeah Quasi!!!

  • 1:27-1:33 pure manliness!!!

  • @HouseBug26 Quasimodo actually looks quite attractive holding Esmeralda up like that without dropping her!

  • baby jokie gabriel rror big marie she mad me def you no that scene has been burned in by mind for 13 years ill never forget this movie i see it wen i was 10 and always loved it

  • This is my favourite part of the movie. Magnificent performance from Charles Laughton

  • Thes best of all the films made of this book. The 1923 was very very good but silent. I was told one time that Maureen was so frighten she passed out during the high flying act here... true ? who knows..

  • great movie, just purchase this on dvd.

  • Go, Quasimodo! He is the true hero of this film.

  • Wonderful scene: Charles and Maureen!

  • :54. AWWEEE! look at him! (((:

  • Charles Laughton is such an amazing actor! such a great part for him. ^^

  • An acting tour-de-force by Charles Laughton ! There is not an actor alive today (in his right mind) that would accept this role. In 1939 the actors themselves carried a film. Today this film would have to rely on special effects to carry it along.

  • Charles Laughton's Quasimodo is the Ultimate Badass. That was an awesome swing to save Esmerelda

  • My local Lib Dem compared BNP Nick Griffin to being like Quasimodo. Deformed and defective.

I told him off for using a severely disabled and socially rejected and abused man as a way of insult.

I was told not to contact him again. and wipes every blog not complimenting and fanning his ego.

Quasimodo. That most excellent of Men. A far better candidate than my local would-be MPs.

Charles Laughton is the ONLY No Quasimodo.

  • My only wish for this was that Esmerelda would've fallen in love with Quasimodo. I know it's not how it went, but it was my wish. I know how Quasimodo feels.

  • I wish every version would have ended that way.Accept ,I think Quasi was the only character in the story capable of real love, even though it was his desire to be with esmeralda, she is a very self centered & (at least in the book) shallow girl.

  • 0:44 xDDD

  • Such great acting from Charles Laughton! And Maureen is so beautiful at 3:46!

  • This ain't no Disney version. It's GOTHIC!

  • holy shit this is incredible , but a classic none the less.

  • this movie's awkward...

  • It's interesting how Quasi combines what sounds like a combination of laughing and crying.

  • OH NO the last part has gone!!!!!! I don't beleive it, I love this film I saw it when i was about 11 with my mum. and had never seen it since. I love this film but the ending has been taken off!!!!

  • What the hell are you talking about??? All 13 parts are on YT. See playlist on my channel

  • @HugosNotreDame lolz

  • @JenCapTchalla the ending is not that important. Because it just shows Esme go with the crowd and hunchback is sad to see her go. THE END.

  • @Freddy46754 Actually the ending is one of the best parts of the movie because of the famous last line uttered by Charles Laughton.

  • i love the bit where he says " LAGER SHE GAVE ME LAGER"

  • Thank you for uploading this - this is my favourite movie of all time! So ahead of it's time - and apart from a few dodgy effects stands up to any film brought out at the moment...

  • "I never knew how ugly I am, until now. It's because you're so beautiful."

I'll remember that pick up line.

  • @drflynn73 You dog, imao!

  • i have to say, the part where quasi saves esmeralda is more powerful in the disney version.

but this movie is really good!

  • You're kidding? That scene with Laughton is the most moving in cinema history! Nothing can compare.

  • I have to thank you for posting this. I was just watching my Netflix rental & it froze up at the rescue scene & I missed this entire section of the movie. What a powerful movie. Almost ruined by Netflix's scratched disc.

  • "I'm not a man... I'm not a beast..." love that scene. And the rescue has to be one of the most joyous sequences ever put on film.

  • so powerful.....influenced every actor and person who ever saw it..." ever since you gave me a drink and a little pity"..never was a more heartfelt line ever spoken.....in any movie....

  • omg ... that is the best scene ever... totally inspiring performance by Laughton a genius of the trade. Far better than anything Olivier ever did on screen.

  • 0:44, QUASIMODO IN THE HOUSE!! "chuckle"

  • The make up is good to be that old ^^,

  • I shall never look to ye again to know what ye think

  • John ye ask me ***Would I give ye sanctuary?

    Thou witch :P ***

clearly your statement and question says what yed do ( there isa no need to ask further (

  • You know, I can watch Charles Laughton as Quasimodo and feel nothing but compassion, but watching Tom Cruise play anybody, even himself and I feel ill and want to vomit.

  • Are you saying you think Charles Laughton is Tom Cruise's acting superior?

  • Erm, yes very much so. Tom Cruise cannot act, he only works well when he has to play emotionless, shallow characters - you know, type-casted roles. I hope you're not a scientologist. ;P

  • I am no Scientologist, and Charles Laughton is indeed Tom Cruise's superior, but I have three words for you that would stop you believing that Cruise only plays emotionless, shallow characters: The. Last. Samurai.

  • I'd agree, The Last Samurai is indeed an excellent film. Though I would add that Cruise pulls it off because the character he plays is an emotionally desensitised war veteran, and doesn't engage much in dialogue. So Mr.Cruise didn't have to act much. If you need any more convincing, I only have four words for you: War of the Worlds. He is so awful in that I actually wretched and had to turn it off due to overwhelming nausea.

  • i love the hunchback, i just wanna go though the screen and say YOU ARE SO UTTERLY ADORABLE :-(

  • Me, too! It is so sad that human nature is to shun those who are different. Quasimodo had the purest heart of all of them.

  • SANCtuary!!! SANCtuary!!!

  • Poor Quasi! such wonderful acting in that scene at 3ish both of them are great! thank u so much for uploadin this by the way

  • Charles Laughton: utterly awesome.

  • is that a young maureen o hara?

  • yeh it is

  • This is a very poignant story, the theme is similar to that of Les Miserables: real virtue lies in forgiveness and grace rather than in self righteousness.

  • There's NOTHING similar between Les Miz and Hunchback thematically. HoND was about different types of love, running the gamut of puppy love (Esm's crush on Phoebus), lust (Phoebus), maternal love (the crazy old woman), love of scholarship (Gringoire) and obsession (Frollo), with only Quasi's love for Esmie being the truest and purest. Les Miz was about a man choosing to lose his social status in order to live an honest life.

  • 9:39-9:57 is so sad!

You know that he wants to confess his love for her but he feels so ostracized by her beauty that he has to cover his own tragic flaws to even attempt it!

    Poor Quasimodo!

  • One of Hollywood's finest actors!

  • Charles laughton was the best, At the time he was the actors pick of best actor, In light of todays not so greats , he really was brilliant

  • For a moment there it looked like she was gonna get crucified.

  • does that church exist?

    where?

  • in Paris, France

  • Thank you so much my friend

  • i used to have a colourful dvd to this well video and it was like all cartoon i loved it

  • My favorite scene from my favorite movie! BTW.. If the "Alleliua" chorus during the rescue scene sounded familiar, it was played again a few years later in another classic. It was played (softly this time) in the finale of "It's a Wonderful Life". First as an instrumental while George Bailey is running down the street yelling Merry Christmas! Then(sung)when he arrives home and sees his family again. It's true. I don't get out much.

  • Amazing!

Thanks for posting. Needed this for film studies research as I am doing a study of the Disney version of this. Very helpful. I love how they took the exact shot from this at "sanctuary" in the Disney film. I love charles' portrayel of Quasi! YAY. So upsetting though... :(

This really is gonna help with my study

    Cheers!!!!

    xxx

  • "she made me def you know"

  • i thot i was going to crywhen he said im going to go away SO U DONT HAVE TO SEE MY UGLY FACE):

  • its not silent

  • I always found this scene to be very sad, he wants so desperately to tell her he loves her but he can't. Poor sweet soul.

  • I always feel that way when I read that scene in the book and in the movies.

  • I love Charles Laughton

  • poor quasy =[

    i cnt believe hes deaf..

  • When he saves her, you can almost see Gringoire doing the appreciative 80's slow-clap.

  • I loved the part when he said he never knew how ugly he was because she was so beautiful

  • OOO, the bells even had names:) I wouldnt marry, just play and be quosimodos friend, none of the men deserved her, but under the disfigured face of the hunchback ther lay a true innocent loving heart :'((sobs uncontrolably)

  • they pronounce quasimodo like kasimoto, it's weird

  • They pronouced it that way because it's French. For example Quebec is sounded Kebec not Q-uebec like the english pronouce it. Its just the rules of pronouciation are different in different lanuages.

  • Although I'm a Chaney fan, I've always felt that this was the BEST version...love that new "foam latex" !

  • esme is just getting sweeter and sweeter. poor Quasy, what a beautyful performance. i didn't think there can be a sweeter quasy than the Disney one, but here he is! amazing!

  • @naly202 She would be sweeter if she would thank him once in a while for all he's trying to do for her...

  • I love Chaney, but to me Charles Laughton is the BEST hunchback!

  • can't tell if quasi's laughing or crying

  • Even the angle is JUST like the Disney film!

  • lol that Quasimodo saving Esmeralda scene was kinda... weird

  • @drakkis It was much more quiet, graceful and... less epic than I thought it would be, but I guess it adds to the realism so it's cool.

  • Aww!!! I heart Gringoire. He's crying with joy!

Aw look, Quasimodo brought her a little birdie.

  • Nice to see you're grown up enough to handle the emotion :-)

  • I'll take that as a gentle backhanded compliment.

  • @Chizpurfle52595 If only Gringoire didn't ruin it by insinuating that Quasimodo would hurt the one he had just saved, fool. -_-"
