He knew that waging the war in Iraq would result in a quagmire, he did it anyway because so long as there's a war, the President can make ever greater assertions of power. Since Iraq is a country that has no real capability to hit us back, there is no worry of them turning the tables on us, and the more people we kill the more enemies we generate, which justifies the need to continue to press on with the war.

So right after Saddam did something worth fighting him for and the U.S. stomped him, Cheney can stand there and go through all of the complications and problems that make it simply not worthwhile to go and get him. Then when there's simply nothing going on in Iraq, he can stand around saying why it's worthwhile to go in and get tangled up with all those complications and problems.

In the First Gulf war , the objective was to eject Iraq from Kuwait. That was a military objective, and it was accomplished. In the 2003 fiasco, the objective was to capture Iraq, hook or by crook, mainly for oil. @glazinq I didn't mean to imply that the people responsible for 911 were linked to Iraq. I meant to convey that, when the US leadership is hiding in an underground bunker and watching their country being attacked on live TV, it tends to change your perspective about how ruthless you should be.
They obviously felt that (even if there were no WMD), getting rid of Saddam was worth it, because that guy was one evil son of a bitch.

I think he had a mini-stroke. Dude has had a heart attack (I hear, can't back it up, but he's the age where that's not a huge stretch) mini-strokes can go without notice, but cause brain damage which can cause dramatic personality changes. I think he had an undetected mini-stroke somewhere along the line. Now, one way to find out for sure would to get an MRI or such.

Let's assume that Bush 33 did the right thing in pressing on to remove Saddam. Whether right or not, it would be one hell of an achievement since a "Bush 33" Administration would have been squeezed in just after Eisenhower (32nd President), and just before Truman (previously our 33rd President). So not only would w. have to time travel back, defeat Truman...and Dewey, then begin a true preemptive strike when Saddam was a child.
