This song became the highest leaper song among 8o's. According to Kasey Kasem, between 1980 to 1981, debuting from no. 39, it jumped to no. 13 the following week on billboard as well as in top 40's. But surprisingly this song reached only no. 3 spot. But it became one of a disco hit that year. Maybe be its because Kim Karnes's song was being more noticed for her Bette Davis Eyes that spent 9 weeks at no. 1 that year.
although it's a good song, I couldn't have seen it as a Grammy nominated song, not alongside some of the other songs that year, in particular, "Gloria" which also
earned a grammy.
Ironically, this marked her last grammy nom for a song (She scored two more well deserved MUSIC VIDEO noms)
And 1982 marked the first of 4 noms for the legendary Laura Branigan, who enjoyed the success of being one of the most famous women of the
They gave her the nom more on reputation than actual merit that year imho. I remember being 9 or 10 and just shocked that Melissa Manchester won for "You Should Hear How She Talks About You", Branigan was totally robbed.
@CharlesNigro I agree. "Gloria" was definitely a superior song on all levels. I do not even watch the Grammy's anymore. It is a joke and music is so awful this decade.
Olivia has great talent and great songs but this has to be her worst song (even though it was very popular). The whole song is just a simple bass line and cheezy lyrics.
I wasn't a fan of much that she did during these years; I thought "Physical" was un-listenable. But I really like this song; there's something strangely dissonant about the instrumentation, also the timing of the rhythm and lyrics is full of surprising shifts.
Damn!! I remember watching this on MTV in the 80's. Back when MTV played videos. I just absolutly LOVE Olivia!!!!!!!!!! (FWIW I'm 40 and single - lol)
I understand it's a metaohor, and a very bad one. It's just my opinion ok? There's nothing tongue in cheek about a heart attack or it's symptoms. Do you know anyone who has died from one? I bet not.
i LLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...and i do me LOVE ONJ!!!
and this song, and everything else that hse has made...i so love the 80's music...i was born '90, but i think i am definitely an '80s baby at heart!!!
As one who has been listening to her since I was in high school in the early 70s, I like all she's done. Some of you have been corrupted by the garbage some of the "music" has become. This is original, and only she can sing it properly. sheesh.
Did or does this even stand the test of time? Like so much crap from back in the 80's,I say...HELL NO! A horrid ONJ song if there ever was one. And she has made quite a few of them.
This may have been one of the least remembered ones (I agree it wasn't very good), but it WAS the early 80's..the competition was Sheena Easton, when she joined the ranks of Prince with "Sugar Walls"...But, ONJ HAS stood the test of time...she's been around for 40 years, and is still there. Where is Sheena and others?
She still looks great, is cool, and is far better at this stuff than anyone today. Nobody was as popular back then, and I still have her first album I got in 74.
And the haircut I great, and would look great today. Sure beats dreadlocks and corn rolls - and she doesnt ruin her body by stacking tatoos on it. God, women have gone to hell since then.
Amen bro.ONJ was all natural unlike the sleezy chicks u see these days. She didn't have the fake boobs,no nosejob,no lipo,no hair extensions,no multiple piercings. She was just straight up beautiful.
I remember when she first came out with this hair cut in the early 80's. It was quite radical for its time. Everyone assumed she was a lesbian. If she were...her girlfriend would be one lucky lady
What cool like like a youths fad-or should i say fade-all things including this beautiful woman change, but she's still so cool now-growing old has to be ok...you have no choice young people, right? so time is an illusion a very real one-but she is so special a performer and person today too! ((o: !!!
OMG!! How long has it been since there's been a saxophone on a pop record? I'd nearly forgotten how much hot sax was a part of 70's and 80's music... LOL
lol, yes I think your right, The kid is driveing her insane giving her a heart attack hence why she is laying around in bed looking deprest ha ha ha, then a shot of the Kid and she's screeching "Heart attck" again (LOL) Kids can def do that to you sometimes (LOL)
Or... She is getting her heart attack from her lover, then she reverts back to her childhood to try and escape the pain. That is when the lightning strikes her reflection in the mirror then she reappears as a child in another shot. Then she meets her younger self in a dream. "What a way to go." Then "You're gonna be the death of me." Then the child touches her and she goes to herself only to find that she is asleep in maybe another dream state. The child (her younger self) is watching over her.
