@alternozzz: If you have a regular (pay-per-ride) Metrocard, then yes, you can. If you are using an Unlimited card, you cannot. The system is designed to prevent many people sharing the same Unlimited card, so once the card is swiped at a turnstile, it becomes inactive for the next 17 minutes. Unless your friend is willing to wait 17 minutes to swipe back in, you cannot share the card.
@alternozzz Interesting question. Here's what the MTA site says:
However, if your credit card account has a billing address outside of the United States, you are not subject to the zip code verification requirement. Instead, type in “99999” when prompted for a zip code. This will indicate to the MVM that an international credit card is being used, and the regular transaction authorization process will still take place.
btw, is there any way you can explain me how to get to penn station from JFK using train or metro service, this is gonna be my first time in NY and I dont wanna get lost (in case any monster as the one in cloverfield appears) :) lol
Can someone hit "Reply" to the right of this comment and tell me whether fraud with credit card "skimming" is prevalent or not when buying Metrocards in New York City subways. What grocery stores in NYC are you able to buy Unlimited Ride Metrocards?
@19TSEliot48: I'm not sure what you mean by skimming, but I have never heard of anyone being a victim of fraud when buying Metrocards at a vending machine. Metrocards can be purchased at many local delis/grocery stores; they will have a sign in their window saying "Metrocard sold here", but most people just buy them at the vending machines in the station. It is unlikely that local stores will take credit card, so you would have to use cash.
Thanks so much for posting this video. I have a friend from Japan going to visit New York for the first time. She doesnt speak English and I wont be able to guide her around . But this video will help me explain how to use the Metro Card Machine. Awesome!!!

@gamesfreak699 Anyone with a brain should know. It's a touchscreen. How difficult can it be? I see tourists do it everyday with no problem.
