What you're seeing in this video is performance art, not martial art.  Most of who you see are performers first and foremost... but when they tour they do keep a handful of gents off-stage that have been trained to fight, not show.

You can still go to Shaolin and study Kung Fu. You can rent an apartment which is quite cheap and go train all day. There won't be any difference except that you are a free man and you can do whatever you want with your spare time. With a few thousand $ you can stay there for a year EASY.

If you mean Wushu, the BS that the Chinese government created that is in the movies, with the giggling (rubber-like) swords and all that, then you are correct 100%. True Shaolin (which is kept mostly within the temple) is still one of the most effective and hardcore fighting systems, period. The real monks occasionally do displays because the communist party wants the money and controls a lot of the food and financial resources the temple has.
