Bah! Who cares if the CDJ screws up! I think it's a little cooler without the vocal samples. We know that it was silly crap, but it hit the spot, and he let himself be drawn in. The synths on their own sound great, instead of bringing in the tech guy so he could shrug, they should have used the chance to let that arp talk more. Improv!
In fact he looked pretty damn frustrated that the CD wasn't patched in/faded up when he triggered it. He's trying to start it from 4:28 and it's *fifty* seconds later before tech slowly strolls over to see what's going on.
Impressed at how Karl tries a number of things in the meantime like reinserting & recueing the CD, but would love him to have just recited that bit himself!
I wonder if there's another live studio version without KCRW tech??
I totally see what he is doing with the guitar...it just isn't very upfront audibly. He is using it for voice manipulation...However I'm curious what he was doing with the cdj
@Dose808 As far as I'm aware, he uses the cds for VOX samples and such. Underworld uploaded a soundcheck video and Karl shows off the back of one of the cd cases there, and it had lots of different VOX samples for different Underworld songs...
no, seriously guys, why exactly is the singer having the guitar? i cant hear any affect of him holding it on the sound at all, im sorry.. to me it all looks more like an act, which doesnt help at all.. dont get me wrong though, i love them, just cant still get the point of the guitar.. despite being a decorative object..
@toono21 He uses the guitar, and I think it can also be used for voice effects and such. Like greater pitch changes. It can be heard in most songs. being a normal guitar, like Jumbo.
Karl does play and use it a lot for various different things.
I still love this group. Always will. Such relaxing and positive music. Always makes me happy when listening to them. I can come home from dealing with my job, pop on any album and be in an instant mellow mood.
i love watching when things are obviously not working to spec with the guys. they manage to let the audience know something is amiss, but the music doesn't stop and if not for their confused shaking of heads and pointing of fingers you'd think everything was bang on.
The funny thing about this group is that EVERY time i see him playing the guitar, i never manage to hear what he is playing! It always gets drowned out.
@Paperhouse81 He's using it to control the pitch on his vocals as well it appears. If you watch him change chords, the pitch adjusts slightly, a bit more than him adjusting pitch on his vocals purely.
@trickflip1 It didnt sound confusing at all, i am a musician myself...i just didnt know what the fuck he was doing because again, i did not hear any changes to anything until you pointed it out.
@trickflip1 still doesnt justify that whole comedy of pretending being a guitarist..:( sorry.. but i demand from legends like these an absolute honesty..
@toono21 He plays actual guitar on some songs. Watch "Everything, Everything.". They're not a guitar-driven group and haven't been in a very long time. I think you're being too harsh in your words. It's another tool of sonic manipulation in this sense. There is nothing wrong with that at all. Their music is about layers upon layers of melodies, rhythms and sonic architecture. Sound beds of design. Beautiful constructions. I love he's using it in an unconventional way at times.
@toono21 You're a tit. It's a well known fact that Karl is a guitarist and that's how he started out. that's his roots right there. It was only later on in his career that he moved on to more electronic music. So you got your demand then... From this hell of a legend you are getting infallible honesty.
If using a vocoder was standard stuff, it wouldn't have needed Peter Frampton to invent and perfect it...

@anorak103 That wasn't KCRW, I'm pretty sure he's with Underworld. He's been in various soundcheck videos at different venues.

I just noticed that the one melody in background is the same as ringing bells on cathedral

I love the use of various instruments in this type of music. Trumpets, guitar, piano, etc. It adds another dimension and layer.

@Dose808 It appears whatever he was using it for didn't pan out. Looks like they had trouble with Karl's side of the rig.
