Talking to a driver during green flag runs was common in Australia (hell, DJ would be racing around the top of bathurst whilst having a convo to the commentators about how much one of the lappers had shit him off. Always alot of fun).
He never had any luck at oval racing in Australia either, the first 2 Calder Park races (australian 1.3mile lowes clone) he entered he ended up in multicar crashes (a broken arm as a result of the first one).
This was not the last race Dick Johnson would drive in NASCAR. He would make 3 starts in 1990, including here, and, at the spring race at Darlington. And wpsracing108, they weren't laughing at him because he crashed or because he was a foreigner, they were laughing because he said "AH FUCK!!" right before he crashed.
I heard a story of another occasion while Dick was racing Nascar that someone had tapped him and sent him off the road and he was on the radio to his team and didn't realise it was being broadcast. He says "Ah this f@#cken prick hit me." Well the "f$&cken prick" in question heard it and to make amends Dick was trying to tell him prick back in Australia meant "top bloke".
@z3J - Four years ago, I know, but IIRC that "f#%kin' prick" Dick was referring to turned out to be none other than "The King", Richard Petty, who Dick normally respected as a bit of a hero.
@JBofBrisbane You certainly do remember correctly (much better than me thats for certain). I'm not sure if you've seen it, but I stumbled across this video a while ago.

It was an interview with Dick and Barry Sheene in Andrew Denton's tv show. The story we both refer to starts at 5:17 in the video, but the whole interview itself is absolutely brilliant.
That looked just like Derrike Cope's crash in the 1999 race, with the addition of profanity. Gotta like Dick Johnson though. That was typical at the time since (from what I understand) Network 7 would interview him during races (under green, mind you), and he would talk about the car, how much lapped cars ticked him off, etc.

I miss the in-car audio of the engines back then, loud and clipping.

Ah - thanks for that James - I'd forgotten why he used to make me laugh so much when I was a kid.
