This overtaking was totally kosher on both driver's accounts. Neither did Schummacher do anything wrong, nor did Villeneuve.
This overtaking was legendary and a mark of genius. At the time this wasn't even shown on TV, but I was lucky enough to be on that grandstand on the outside of the curve and witnessed it live. Unforgivable (even if for me as a Ferrari and Schumacher supporter it was a bit hard to digest, but genius is genius)

bah...during the 1996 season williams renault was much more powerful than ferrari...otherwise jacques couldn't have overtaken schumi!

@elpubedeoro18 this was the 97 season not 96 Newey left in 96 the Fw18 with which Hill won the title was a much better car than the fw19 which Villenuve won the title due to lack of input during the season from Newey who left to join Mclaren

@palinsuxdix it was 1996, the move helped jv win the race and stay in the hunt for the title. They didn't have a grand prix at Estoril in 1997.
@elpubedeoro18 the reason JV made the overtake stick was because he insisted on setting the car up in the same way as indy cars did on the banked ovals. It pissed off patrick head... but JV was adamant that with the car set up his way he would be able to overtake around that corner as it was much alike the long bends he was used to in america.

I'm sure if MS was in the same car, he wouldn't overtaked many laps earlier, by being faster, since he's the best anyway.
