He worked 15 hour days and almost never went to those fancy fundraising dinners, preferring to work. I think he had a Jesuit education and was going to be a priest in his early days. Say what you will about a Jesuit education, but it teaches you not to be a greedy fuck that equates wealth with God's approval, like Calvanists and other protestants.

As mayor of Oakland he realized that it is not continuous testing that makes for a better school system, as the conservative Meg Whitman and Michelle Rhee types advocate for, but it is something else. He is considering not allowing spending for new tests which would track both teachers and students on their standardized tests. Bravo!
