  • What a great mind.

  • ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! IS IT REAL!

  • I know a totally different "theo Jansen" and he is going to drive a MERCEDES soon....

  • Это что за чучело было ????????

  • Esto no tiene madre. Maestro en mecanismos !!!!!!!1

  • Perfect example of how advertising can make you think this guy anything whatsoever to do with BMW.

  • Goku's Nembis! rahful (that's ROFL)

  • whats the name of this song?! please write...

  • and Theo Jansen's fine work has nothing to do with BMW

  • Афигеть !!! КЛАСС!!!

  • "The wall between art and engineering exists only in our minds" So true.

  • That is absolutely fantastic.

  • Awesome!

  • cool vid and awesome talent but what the hell does it have to with BMW or cars at all. its definitely a stretch to say that its about efficiency and technology blah blah blah. it seems they couldnt combine the 2 things very well in the commercial.

  • wooooo land kites...

  • just wanna say that you are awsome and i envy you for sutch a great mind

  • sick

  • this wont beat my two legged android theo jansens mechanism

  • oh my God!!! that's beautiful, but what if it was a really windy day and it ran away?

  • have a look at my uploads for some much smaller solar kinetic art thingys : )

  • So the artist is trying to break out of the definitions of 'art' and 'engeneering', but BMW are defining it as innovation...

  • @object000 innovation in art?

  • @rivengle well, yeah, if you want ot go putting the specific tags on it that the artist was trying to avoid... Maybe even innovative artistic engeneering... :/

  • OMG!!!!!!

  • Amazing! Amazing!!!

    Axartist

  • i dont get it. bmw owns that guy?

  • @iugey fortunately not. It's a independent artist from the Netherlands just like me.

  • Volvo Construction Equipment is also a leader in inovation......

  • amazing

  • awesome

  • Got Brain !

  • for such innovation, BMW should have more cars that don't all look the same. just sayin'

  • Seems like result of obsessive masturbation to me ... still, not a crime :)

  • amazing

  • Is it me, or does this guy look a lot like Roger Waters?

  • looks like rogers waters!!

  • I love this ad, and I love BMW. <3

  • if only bmw would start building cars that would drive on ;solar -wind-kinetic water electric -power instead of using someone elses brilliant visions and constructions.to use it for wastefull poluting and unneccesary cars. i live in amsterdam and at six a cloc there are traffic jams in town , moving so slow,, that i am faster at home on my bike then anyone else, and there is only one person sitting in a car that could transport 4 people,, go figure

  • we need a better quality and longer video of this man

  • Hi, Innovative people, I m participating on an innovation tournament! The challenge is "how to innovate chili to help students to be more daring, talk to corporate leaders, do new things"! I have made this 3 minutes video, anyone can give me more idea to improve it? or is there any forum to discuss about it? thanks... ^ ^

they're almost like beautiful gigant insects !

  • Wow

  • Fake.

  • Slave wages, anyone?

  • Exciting video ! Thank you, for posting.

  • For some reason, not that his ideas are bad, but I see Mr. Jensen's ideas evolving and eventually ruling the world. lol.

  • You are truly the 21st century Leonardo da Vinci - Combining art with Engineering.

  • I want the schematics!

it's a shame that it still needed oil to make the bottles that ran the machine

And tell you the truth im all for what "alitthomson" said, you could have put nikes on that machine and had the same impact on advertising.

    BMW = Credit thieves!

  • I've had a go with a smaller one of these- they're so clever and it takes virtually no force whatsoever to move them.

  • i could break that so easy

  • gzus

  • Very Da Vinci like!

  • these are truly out-of-my-mind amazing peices of art!!

  • bloody hell.. amazing

  • wow that was fuckin awesome

  • The tagline should be 'Theo Jansen. Defining Innovation'. Fuck you BMW for taking all the credit. A car commercial without the car? What the fuck is that? This is the laziest bit or advertising I've ever seen, I mean, all you have to do is put another car brand's name in the place of BMW to advertise it instead. 'Honda. Defining Innovation' or 'Skoda. Defining Innovation'. The commercial would be exactly the same otherwise.

  • This video was used for the UCSD COGS 101C take home final. We where asked to analyze the video for elements of cognitive linguistics.... isn't college fun

  • @outlaw949 lol I am totally with you on that one! I will never watch this video ever again after tonight!

  • @outlaw949 Still writing it, it's due in an hour...

  • cool !

  • mad respect

  • This is what you do when you dont need to work for a living. Great things are possible when you have limitless bankroll and time.

  • amazing. congrats.

  • Ths truly amazing

  • really GOOD!!!!

he is da vinci reencarnation xD

  • He is Da Vinci, My Idol

  • Madre santa *.*

  • Why did BMW hire a Dutch artist to be in their SOUTH AFRICAN commercial? Very simple... They were seeking to attract the attention of affluent South African "Boers" (white people of Dutch descent) by associating BMW's image with that of a Dutch artist or, in reality, any other Dutch symbol that's able to suggest a great deal of class and credibility. The subliminal message is "hey South Africans, real Dutch people trust BMW"...

  • @eeeeeeeeesssaaaaaaaa ... This is so true that BMW didn't use Theo Jansen's commercial anywhere else but in South Africa.

  • good luck

  • what a boss.

  • what he says at the end = something most ppl would never want to hear their surgeon say.

  • oh thats awesome... now that, i would love to drive to work in. if it was a mode of transportation that is. lol

  • The power of imagination.

  • No, its for real! My design class studied this guy, he's brilliant. Those models are called kinetic motion models and they are powered by the wind.

  • it aint fake dude, i´ve been in this guys workshop, they´re all for real..

  • the biggest selling point of this video has to be the fact that those artistic creations were utilizing wind power to generate enough energy to move.

so if they can be that efficient with an object that size, then transferring the same efficiency to a vehicle would result in a better vehicle.

great minds will create. and joining great ability with technology can produce things we haven't seen yet.

very cool... can't wait to see

  • this commercial is genius

"the walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds. and few have the imagination to see beyond them."

    but BMW does.

"I strive to push the boundries of what we know and what seems possible at this moment in time"

thats what the artist does, thats what bmw does.

    epic commercial.

  • i mean its a good advert and all but i mean where does the actual car come into the picture

  • @iia33ii

Well in this commercial, this shows the creativity of some of BMW's best engineers. The concept of using light materials and making the seemingly impossible become real. BMW used that in making GINA, a BMW made totally of a stretchy, soft skin instead of sheetmetal. Further forward, BMW has made future concepts of amazing products, like a concept M1 Homage or an electric car that still keeps the BMW goal of sheer driving pleasure. So if you really think about it, BMW is amazing... :D

  • @Arkodius10 im gonna have to go with you on that one =D

  • @Arkodius10 This guy isn't part of BMW... They're just using him to associate BMW with him and his creations. He's an artist/engineer in Holland that creates wind powered (I mean actually wind powered, not electricity drawn from wind) sculptures that walk. There's no electricity or modern mechanical components as you'd think of them in any of these, and he has absolutely nothing to do with BMW.

Please, give Mr. jansen the credit he is due, not BMW simply because they made the commercial.

  • @Marvintherobot8 ohhhh okay, thanks for correcting me! D: i feel kinda dumb now

  • @Arkodius10

Woops, posted that before someone else corrected you. appologies.

  • @Arkodius10

What the hell are you on about? BMW use the old "bait and switch" technique and you fell for it. The artist has nothing to do with BMW, but of course they stick a logo on thier and suddenly everyone is like "WOW BMW IS THE BEST!!!!"

  • i wonder how many of them just walked into the ocean or blew away lol

  • There is a movie where he explains how these work. They've got a simple way of feeling water and walls and stuff.

Feeling water is done by constanly having an air current flowing through, and when it stops some mechanics go mad and let the beast turn the other way. With walls it's really simple. There are several sticks sticking out, and when hitting a wall, the pushing of the creature against the wall will push the rod and the attached mechanism.

  • kinda reminds me of howl's moving castle

  • @fps4d WHOA it does doesnt it!!! so freakin cool! and SUCH a superb movie

  • That is so awesome! Not to mention SO bmw. They've always been linked with art, in many ways. MANY. and in many parts of the word with many different people.

  • I love this guy's machines. They really capture the spirit of the word 'contraption.' And in a way, it's that same spirit which most seems to typify our biological machines as well.

  • That's interesting. There might be a lot of opportunities in how to take advantage of natural powers with more familiar ways.

  • fair play...thats clever

  • if i saw one of those things walking towards me on the beach i would run like a bat out of hell!

  • lol

  • @Obelix6 I'd love to put it on a beach (when no one is around); put some cameras on it, and film everyone's faces as it gallops everywhere..that'd be the u-tube hit of the decade I reckon...

  • Boredom produces many wonderful things.

  • @sabertooth1980

And sometimes its just boring being bored, but this is wonderfull

  • I agree.

  • @sabertooth1980 And lots of disposable income...lol

  • @Kayenne54 That's for damn certain

  • @sabertooth1980 u really made me laugh from the gut. I never laughed like that for months. Thanks ! -:) BTW your comment is really rude ! -:) You're 20 ?

  • @Metalloys Yes. Because 1980 was 20 years ago.

  • @sabertooth1980 amen

  • you know what to do

  • 60 year old men turn ya on then?

  • He's gonna use those things to take over the world :o

  • this is EXACTLY what Leonardo DaVinci was designing over 500 years ago!! if you have the chance, go to the library and look at some of his drawings ! it will blow your mind!

  • gets goose bumps every time i watch this ... it sends my imagination soaring and i am gone for hours!

  • Does anyone else think this is creepy.

Im telling you this guy will use his creations to take over the world and and redefine evolution with plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. In the future you will remember I warned you.

  • stop in haling your own feces youre loosing your minnnnndddd

  • This man is a Genious!

  • It was him alone i guess and he's still alive 'cause he stole the secret of immortality either...

  • you're probably a cunt. But that isn't a rumour.

  • your enggineering education amazing, kinetic power

  • Brilliant Work Theo!!!!!!

  • amazing :):)

  • Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

  • wow I was shocked

How smart this guy is !

  • el comercial no me gusta tanto, pero las maquinas son increibles!

i don't like the commercial, but the machines are just amazing!

  • its the future!!!

  • who cares about the politics... the point at hand is that bmw's engineers are amazing!! his walking creation is amazing. bmws are pretty amazing!

  • exactly mikesjunk, everyone shush apart from saying wow

  • Theo Jansen is not an engineer at BMW, they just used him to make a cool commercial and fake the idea that they're a company with a green image.

  • Guess what! It wasn't about "being green;" it was about the "walls that separate art and engineering only exist in our minds." Ill translate this into very very plain English. Engineering doesn't have to be just practical it can be a beautfiul art as well. And FYI, BMW is much more green than many companies lol.

  • The highest form of art is engineering.

  • It all depends on what you call "green"... For me, a company that builds cars (possibly the machine that pollutes the most) Can't be green by nature unless is a solar powered car....

  • @pedritocobos How many times must I insist that the commercial has nothing to do about "being green"? With that said, Earth's pattern of warm and cool cycles has gone on for millions of years. Humanity can only have so much effect upon that. It's like saying, "Boats are altering currents in the ocean, causing weather patterns to change!" Please don't mindlessly recite the kind of junk that exists only because Al Gore wanted to be a multimillionaire. It depresses me to see people fooled so easily

  • Beautiful

  • imagine unleashing one of those sculptures on a crowded beach. mwahahah

  • gread ad for the wrong companie ;)

  • "Company" would be the word you were looking for.

  • lutsch mir einen

  • I don't know about BMW, but this commercial is awesome!!!!

  • BMW IS PERFECT

  • Da Vinci would be proud, amazing what a human can create,as opposed to what we can destroy.

  • this guy is a legend. I would like to meet him in real life
