I agree the books are better, but to say theirs no purpose in making a series out of it is not fair imo. Not everybody likes to read, and i respect that. So now everyone gets to experience a amazing story
I didn't watch much of this on TV, since i pictured the characters very differently and wanted it to stay that way. Plus you are totally right - the books are very long..building the characters and tension..shortening this process dumbs down everything. Regarding the visuals - violence and sex is a part of the book, but here it's been misused for shock value, being provocative etc..the books are so much more than that! just finished A Dance With Dragons!
"I dont see the purpose of turning this into a tv series".... I bet you feel like a fool now that the show was a huge success. Anyway, the show is great for people who don't like to read (not me, many people like that though) yet still want to experience this awesome story.
@asands123 YOU may enjoy the books more and I agree, the books are much better, much more in depth however thousands of people who don't read would probably consider the show better and it's a great show as well. It's also put a lot more money into HBO's pockets and will continue to do so. So I'd say those were some pretty decent "purposes".
ok - I agree (if you have imagination) you can't beat a book...however!...I rarely read, especially fiction...can't really say why, but it takes me forever to finish a book, though, in film format I LOVE the stories. I would rather they slowed things down in film and showed more, but then I wouldn't get bored where most people might, but I'm a very visual person, and coupled with the sound etc - AWESOME. It really shows when good graphics and sets are used. thumbs up! :)
Martin has a pretty huge hand in the making of the series. So long as that situation doesn't change, the series will be good. Whether or not you like books better than tv/movies is of course your opinion, i lean toward the book side myself most of the time, but you gotta admit, it was pretty awesome seeing the books come to the screen in a way that did the novels justice. It was kind of odd to see Tyrion portrayed by a guy who was anything less than an abomination, but still...win
@humdrumfeast the series is defintly win :) i love the series and they did a pretty good job bring the books alive. of course i still hold dear to the books but they can keep continuing the series as far as im concerned :)
@asands123 I have not watched True Blood. I've read that the first season of True Blood on HBO followed the book closely, but then the show began to deviate from the books in the second season. Now the show is nothing like the books.
I think, as the Game of Thrones series progresses, HBO will find it harder and harder to stay true to the books -- due to budgetary constraints.
I agree, much gets lost in translation to the visual medium. Reading the thoughts of characters in each 1000p novel is so much of what makes this story engrossing. But bringing a book to film or television animates it, makes it less abstract & easier to share. We've done it since the Greeks first wrote & performed their plays, & many great films were adapted from books. This series and its rich characters & environment are compelling on screen, making it a welcome new visit to a familiar place.
The reason you've seen so many great books fail on t.v. is simply because you read and enjoyed the books. I remember reading Eragon many years ago then seeing the movie with my dad (who hasn't read Eragon), he loved it, I thought it was crap. Why do they turn books into movies and ruin them? 1. A clear majority watch t.v. rather than read 2. There is easy money to be made 3. If the movie or t.v. series is exactly like the book, you wouldn't like it either 4. Time constraints ... etc
@sharkfin06 it is a pretty good series but its also just like the book series..so yeah i still stand by my point books > tv series. although they did a really good job
@asands123 Some fight scenes in the TV series were better than those in the books, e.g., Ned vs. Jaime (different from the book, but I like the TV version better) and Drogo vs. Mogo (which was not in the book.)
I was hoping the TV would show at least one battle scene, but apparently HBO did not have the budget for it... doesn't bore well for the next seasons.
Also, not enough direwolves, too much tits. I luv tits, but seriously, the first season had too much.
Thanks for the vid... looking foward to the rest of the series, but having read the books is like drinking condensed milk. Still better than the swill they put on telly nowadays. Life is for living and your presence brightens my day.... many thanks.....
Wow you are a wonderfully attractive woman. You are so rare. An intelligent opinionated woman with a desire to discuss story and your feelings. I was a big fan of the Wildcards book when I was a boy. Robert Jordan, Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Tolkien are my favorite writers. I have rediscovered George RR Martin through The Game of Thrones HBO series. I think his story telling has the best pacing and most realistic plot I have ever known. Im exicted to read this series now.
A song of ice and fire consists of mostly visual events and dialogue so far, so the live action adaptation won't be too bad. I can't help but feel the story would be spoiled for people that haven't read the books. That happened for me with Harry Potter :( . At least it won't turn out as badly as a movie version of the Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies. Those were great books but would make horrendous movies!
Goodkinds books suck and pretty much not all that great to be put on tv...
George Martins books are epic and almost seem like they are historical!...plus once the heads start to roll and main characters die I think alot of people will love it more!
Looks like it going to be a really good adaption of the Books. It really do not look to become as cheesy and mainstream as Legend of the Seeker became. Was so disappointed at that adaption.
Now, I havn't yet read George RR Martin so thats a good thing when I watch the TV-Series. And if it sucks I can always just get the books later. I know I will not have time to read them before anyway.
Well, when we're talking about HBo's series, it has already good chances to be very good. I can remember matbe one or two seasons of all HBO's series (mainly the drama ones) that were'nt amazingly good.
And, unlike you, I do think it's a good story for the type of serieoriginal plots that HBO are used to produce. It has complex characters and a incredibly original plot, and explores themes that could be very visually appealing. And you can base a visualstory in dialogues, watch The White Ribbon!
he did kind of start out writing for television, maybe always meant to get back to it in a bigger way? looks like they're adjusting for content big time, book might have been rated r, but for a series, nuh-uh, even the special content channels need to water down some of this stuff. way too realistic. way too big for a movie, way too big for a tv, maybe the dance with dragons release was delayed for the series?
Money is the reason!! Money, lol, jk, people will love the series show, im sure it will be good with Martin overlooking it, of course it wont be even close to as good as the book, so keep encouraging book reading!!! Oh my, Terry Goodkind, fantastic yet horrid all at once, great writer, just drags thing on, doesnt he?
@TheLadyKaylah i saw some previews on youtube and it looks awesome. whether its horrible or not id think itll be pretty cool to see it come to life. i cant even begin to imagine how much its going to cost for production being it on such a big scale. just hope they get it right!
Lord of the ring wasn't a good job base on the books. It was a good movie. A good Hollywood movie. But it doesn't have any soul. The movies just follow the events of the book, but could you feel the soul inside Ents' eyes? Did you fear Sauran? It wasn't real. There were some real good movies base on books like Godfather, Fight club, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, and few others. But it is kind of impossible to turn a book to a movie. The movies are just faint image of the books.
I sympathize with your fears, but I don't know if you should be too concerned about it. HBO lately has been making some fantastic series', and George RR Martin also has some screenplay and teleplay experience. I know you made this video a while ago, so your opinion may have changed - but the preview that they released looks pretty promising. Honestly, I think the plot works perfectly... it's basically a more epic and awesome version of The Tudors. It could be terrible, but it should be fine.
hey, you incredebly beautifull and you like almost everything that i like, including the amazing george rr. martin series. Nice to hear your opinion about the HBO producing ice and fire , i also fear that they are just not going to be able to cover all the story and characters from the books. Nice to hear an opinion on this matters =) hope you stay good.
I had been hoping for years that HBO would do the Fire and Ice books. Finding out that they are actually doing it made me feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. I can't wait to open my present from Santa.
And the best thing is that it gives me an excuse to read them all over again. My only complaint is that George has abandonned the series for what seems like 20 years. I'm worried he's gonna pull a Robert Jordan and croak before finishing the series.
Just read the part where Eddard gets captured for treason against Joffrey (sorry for spoilers). Damn, a part of me is hoping that Robb somehow musters an army, storms King's Landing, saves Eddard and then they both march on the Lannisters.
But that's not going to happen, and I'm glad in a way because it'd be too predictable. Life ain't predictable :P
12 parts for each book seems enough to make it work, i hope they wont spoil it cause im really looking foward for this series, I have seen the teasers and they don't look bad i guess. Is it really true R.R Martin only puts out a book every 5 years?
I'd also use Stephen King as example, who I think GRRM reminds me of. I LOVE Stephen King. When his books are turned into movies and done right we get Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, Hearts in Atlantis, Green Mile, but it can go really wrong such as some of the others that the director or filmmakers don't understand how to bring it to film
Have to subscribe because I agree with all your points. I also enjoyed Terry Goodkind's books up until the one with the bells, which was not very good, and I stopped reading his stuff. Yes, especially Fantasy, filmmakers will ruin it for mainstream consumption, but I'd say that this may not happen with SOIAF at first anyway, I'd use X-men and Spider-man 1-2 as examples of how it can be done right, and Spiderman 3 as how it can go wrong.
yeah but what happens when the tv series catches up with the books and GRRM still hasn't bothered to write the second half of a dance with dragons? unfortunately truly complex books such a Steven Erikson's can never be transferred to screen so they have to stick to books such as GRRM where really he just kills off the character you've just spent a couple of chapters identifying with for shock value, again and again and again. cant see a shortened, abridged version being worth the time

Its nice to know that HBO is taking this project, because George is right about how "these books are very adult fair, its fantasy done for adults" finally we can see something that sticks with the maturity of the books. Its sad that "The Sword of Truth" had a very crappy T.V show that didn't even stick with the story, nor was Mature enough. It is also nice to know how George Martin is Co Producing the show, so I am sure the show is going to be exactly like the books, which is fucking great.
I think a series is the only way it could be done. No way a film or three like Lord of the Rings, which is far inferior to this, could handle these books.
well, yeah...you're looking at a 12 hour movie for each book...plenty of time to complete the story...:)....r u waiting anxiously for "Dance with Dragons"?
@asands123 One episode a month for a year = one season. Unless you've watched other HBO series, you don't know how much airtime it actually is. Also, I understand what you're saying, but HBO makes fantastic sieries like The Wire and Deadwood. There is nothing dumbed down in them. On the contrary, because of episode limit, they know how to squeeze in a lot of information by good acting, intelligent dialogue and the masterful characters and their relationship with each other.
I think you bring up some good points. I also wonder how much the series will permanently alter my view of George R R Martin's world and all the characters I love and hate. Ken Kesey went to his grave having never watched Cuckoos Nest because he didn't want to forever envision RPM as Jack Nicholson. I never understood his reasoning until this show.
I will for the time being remain excited about the series. Anything to get my ASOIAF fix is a good thing.
I love ASoIaF but I hate how the author takes so long to write the next book. It's been 5 years and we haven't even gotten so much as a release date for A Dance with Dragons. Knowing my luck he'll die before he finishes this series.
HBO is different. This isn't a low budget production like The Sword of Truth on the WB (which I agree sucks). Have you ever seen Deadwood, Rome, Sopranos, Band of Brothers The Pacific, True, Blood or Entourage? HBO doesn't mess up, they make high quality shows and they do it right. The first book is being made into 10 one hour episodes. That's 10 hours for 1 book. LotR was ~3 hours per book. You can quote me on this: "The Song series on HBO will be exceptionally good"
true enough about the series thing, however you cant disagree that a mini-series is a much better than making a movie out of it. at least with the mini series they can develop the characters and the plot. plus with gorge rr martin was quoted saying that the hbo screen play stayes quite close to the origional plot

The thing is...this isn't being adapted into a movie. It's a series, and each season will be created around one book. If they can't include every aspect of one book in an entire season of 1 hour episodes, then they shouldn't be making ANY sort of premium television because that's just pathetic. Also...it's HBO. They've done some pretty amazing stuff. I see what you're saying though. I guess we'll see how it turns out.
I think if you were going to try to make the book into a series, HBO would be the way to go. Game of Thrones is possible to do as a series because the way the chapters are set up, it's very episodic. Each episode could touch on each different character. The only problem I see is people remaining dedicated to the continuity. But with DVR, TiVO, On Demand, Hulu, what have you, there's really no excuse. I do agree though, I don't think they planned for his gaps between publishing.
For one, it's made by HBO; known for pretty dramatic stuff. George R.R. Martin's writing is all very dramatic, very emotional and very raw. I think the fit there is pretty good.
Secondly, I don't think it'll be fast-paced. The series isn't even finished, and even now with the number of major events in the story you could have several seasons.
Thirdly, it's just a fool's hope. I don't want to believe the series will be bad. xD
Martin is a fat pig. I guarantee that self obsessed jerk will never finish the series, so I've pretty much given up caring. There are other great authors out there. I just hate the fanboys that are licking this guys boots while he shits on them.
@refuckulate420 Meh. He's a great author. It takes time to write a book--especially if you've got to have an actual job to support yourself, which allows for loads of distractions. Writing is fairly easy-- writing well is pretty difficult. There's a lot of trial and error, a lot of wasted time, a lot of bad ideas scrapped, character development planned carefully...
I'm not angry with him because I understand it's no easy feat creating a universe and a story that's actually good.
Sorry if you think he's going to finish the series you are extremely delusional. His books are good, but they aren't THAT good. He's going to end up pulling a Robert Jordan, how much you want to bet?
And there are authors that have created a universe and story that's is good, and within better timeframe, because they are dedicated to the writing. Martins cares more about NFL, conventions and eating.
@refuckulate420 It's one of the best I've read. Even a piss-poor author like myself knows that you can't leave an entire universe in the dust. It's a little piece of your very soul forged into something that everybody else can see; it's almost like a baby.
You expect him to devote his entire life to writing? I think you're the delusional one.
This is my problem. Who are they gonna play the Mountain. He's 8ft tall and built. I am worried who they will choose to play Bronn. Its just there is so many characters can this work. My only hope is that its done by HBO who are known for Sopranos, Rome, and Deadwood.
What you said about book adaptation is generally true but this is HBO we're talking about. Their series are very mature and never fail (please name me one bad HBO series).
I agee with you as well, novels and novel series such as A Song of Fire & Ice shouldnt be made into a tv series. I watched the first season of Terry Goodkinds. The Seeker and they totally ruined it. They canned the show btw. Now if they made each novel into a movie they might succeed like the LOTR series. Problem with that though is like you said Mr. Martin comes out with books every 5 years so he may never get to finish it considering how old he is getting lol.
Martin used to write for TV and I believe he takes active part on the tv series.
Anyway most of HBO series have been great, with a good team this could really do justice to the books; obviously a book to tv translation can never be perfect, there are some things that have to be let go. I can't stand fans complaining they didn't add line 156 in page 50.
thank God i was five when the first book came out so that i didnt have to wait another 10 years before the 4th book came out.......but it will still be forever till the last book comes out. oh and does anyone know when the new inheritence book is going to come out?
@Gentilegentry The ending of the third book was indeed tragic but I dont know...it was also really awesome. I dont want to give spoilers to people who are reading it but its so unexpected the ending!
@asands123 GRRM's pretty good about making twists like that. I guess I feel about the HBO series the way I felt about the Starship troopers movie in that I won't really associate it with the book. It'll probably be entertaining anyway.
(PS, here's hoping they cast a Persian/Indian as the Red Viper of Dorne.) I'm hoping the Dornish are Indian/Persian in appearance. >.>
@Gentilegentry The end of the first book did the opposite to me, because I knew right away that many great things will await in the next books, an event like that in a long series as that has it's purpose, which is mostly to make the best out of it, and make the book even more interesting later on.
@Gentilegentry That is the most awesome thing about the book... You do not have this cliche storyline and main characters who will always be alright. The story even seems real, because in real life, good ppl suffer as much as the rest and in the end there are no good and evil, its just men and women with their own flaws... That is what makes the series so great and i hope that they will be able to replicate the complexity of the books in the series as close as possible
if a series is made from a book, then the series should depict the book version not a modern broader audience version.
the series should be made so the fans that actually care about the book can connect to what the series really is about, and not just pick up scraps and crap from here and there like most series now adays.
if someone fucks this up i hope they die in a horrible and slow manner!
Asands123, please, have faith in HBO. Never have I seen a production that would be "turn to be a failure". They are able of spending great deal of resources on their production. They always meet the public expectations, which, god save, does not mean they are comformists!
Honestly, with Sean Bean as Eddard and D. Benioff as scriptwriter, I am entirely sure of the success.
Keep your fingers crossed as I do!
PS You speak, as well as look, very pretty. Keep it up! It's interesting to watch you!
@Gentilegentry She plays video game too. She reviewed Mass Effect in one of her videos, and in the video she mentioned she had played many other RPGs.
oopps I put this another video before I realized you had this one. but again. HBO has agreed to the pilot and 9 episodes for A Game of Thrones. There going to make it so 1 season = 1 book, and most likely 1hr episodes thats 9hrs! more then enough time to do a very good job on turning the books into film.
I was actually thinking about this some days ago when I finished A Clash of Kings and I thought that they could be easily made into a series and capture all the essence of the book without any problem. The only problem would be the thoughts of the characters, it looks very cheesy when they put a voice-over of his thoughts, but they will find out some way to do it.
About the huge cast or cutting off scenes, well, some of them are not really THAT important...
Some scenes could be cut off and some characters could be removed without any trouble to the main story.
A series for each book, that means about 14:40 for each book (considering they go the usual 22 episodes per season). 15 hours is more than enough to reflect 600~700 pages, especially since some details that take space in the book are not necessary, like the description of the characters.
The series will eventually catch up to the book and then it will have to be canceled and continued 4 or 5 years later with a hole new cast (to replace the fast-growing teenagers).
I am in high hopes for this series and I really think it could work. We'll just have to wait and see what comes up.
By the way, I thought this video would be some joke or something, since, as cheesy as this sounds, you don't have the look of a person who likes fantasy books. That was a surprise.
it would have to be done in a series...the books are way too long to be made into a a movie of a mere 2 hours...even if they made one move per book it still wouldnt do it justice. im pretty confident that the series could be done but i just hope they do it right ;)
I think that books should never be made into movies, since 2 hours is not NEARLY enough. If it has to be made, 3 or 4 movies PER book would have to be necessary and maybe even that wouldn't be enough. But a series... That's a different story. 15 hours per book, I think it's manageable.
@asands123 Lotr was decent but alot was missing, if they'd made several movies about each book, they could have earned more, and taken more time to tell the story.
if this series is somewhat like what lotr turned out to be, then i'd be somewhat happy, but i think the volume and story of each individuall book would demand atleast 2 movies per book just to tell the story without loosing to much or making it seem to fast:)
If anything it needs to be made in to a movie. The problems though would be money, and the cast would have to be amazing. Like best actors avaliable in the WORLD amazing.
First, there is NO WAY ASoIaF could fit into a movie.
I agree with the cute girl that a tv series will naturally lose some of the depth and context of its characters but if any network could do it justice it would be hbo. I also really like the cast they have for the pilot.
I agree about Terry Goodkind- his books spiraled downhill after the 5th book. I kind of enjoyed his tv adaptation until they started completely raping the books' storyline, but i dont think martin will let that happen.
i enjoyed it when they raped his books..i thought some episodes were kinda interesting..esp the one about the other mother confessor...i really didnt give the series a chance and only recently watched the entire first season and some of the second season....it is a pretty horrible series but is worth watching ( i guess)
I do like his attention to detail. What comes to mind is when Davos's sons complain about green pine and how water stored in it will spoil on long journeys but littlefinger being behind Lysa Arryns poisoning and all of the new droll character additions to the series have watered down the latest book. I hope a dance of dragons is better even though I think splitting the story geographically was a mistake because its impossible for the plot to progress. If time doesn't move how can the plot?
i love his attention to detail but i think hes going overboard in a feast for crows. i feel like his attention to detail in the history of his world is overshadowing the actual plot of a feast of crows. i have the feeling during the book that its going absoultly nowhere. Im already 300 pages into the book and nothing significantly has changed at all with the plot!
I think the red wedding is one of the worst plot devices of all time. Not just because I don't like it but the whole northern army going up in flames without a survivor or a scrap of resistance left is difficult to swallow. Its tragedy for the sake of tragedy. Its one thing for robb to die in battle or by poison or by hidden dagger but quite another for his entire army and house to die with him. I understand that suspense is neccesary and that characters can't be percieved to be plot protected..
I have some problems with George RR martin one being the red wedding which I don't think has any historical precedent, the second being that aerys would have destroyed kings landing if Jaime hadn't killed him absolving the kingslayer and casting him in a new light. He kills off the very reasons that the fans follow the series. Robb is dead, Bran is crippled, Arya is blind, Eddard is also dead and what is left is Jaime Lannister and Brienne of tarth and the two survivors jon & tyrion.
i agree..the guy seems to work pretty slowly..i wonder if his time could better be spent on finishing the series though...
i do feel like asoiaf is his authors curse though...i mean if youve read dream songs by him, its full of series he started but never got around to working on
like many good authors he'll probably only be rememberd by ASOIAF by most ppl
From Dreamsongs I only read the one story about the Ant People but that was incredible.
If you check out his blog it's so clear that he has no sense of urgency when it comes to finishing the series. I get the feeling that he already made his money and he doesn't have the same drive that he did when he started ASOIAF.
I agree that he will only be remembered by ASOIAF, but do you have any of his other works you could place on par with it? (I ask seriously because I would read them).
i agree with what you said about the psychological dialogue. I admit I am SO psyched for this show, but my biggest fear is if they mess up the inner dialogues in all the characters heads. A large part of the later books follows Tyrion and then Jamie (and of course Cersei) and you come to fall in love with the Lannister boys, in large part because of their wit and how they think. I dont see that that would be possible with a movie (dune is the last movie i saw with that and that felt so dumb)
Noone can do George RR Martin's writings justice on film, but I can think of noone better to try than HBO. I have watched many of their series and and I feel it "could" be good. (Especially if George writes the screenplay). I thought the production of " ROME " was oustanding. With that said I'll see what the pilot is like. If it turns out well .. maybe.. George will release " A Dance with Dragons " .. It's about time dont ya think?
The thing about Martin, unlike many fantasy novels, is how focused it is on mediaeval realism, rather than hocus pocus. This makes it eminently more filmable. HBO have implied that they are focusing on a character based production (which is what the books are generally) which is good and the right way to go. The other book that focused on mediaeval realism turned into a film/tv series was Lord of the Rings and that was very well done (except the ending being too hollywood).
HBO usually does not make bad series but they will have a huge challenge with "Game of Thrones" because of it's immense depth and gritty nature. I am hoping for the best and it looks as though they are giving it a chance with the cast and budget. We shall see. And BTW easy on Harry Potter it's silly but fun.
thats exactly my thoughts. and about harry potter, i knoooooooooooooow, but its still really cheesy looking! im gonna give it a chance when i have time..someday...then we shall see how wrong i am :)
It really could go either way depending on HOW it's made. (What do you think about the casting, by the way?)
You're exactly right about "rushing" potentially destroying the series, but I think that's more of a problem with movies. They could easily split up individual books over several seasons.
I'm more worried about the audience. People seem to have short attention spans, so I hope they aren't turned off by all the talk of heraldry and lineage, etc.
someone gave you a downpoint but you have a really good point. Im going to argue in my next video that a problem will be cost production. If you look at ROME, it had great writers but making it real cost huge amounts of money..which is why (atleast i heard) when the studio burned down, it was too expensive to rebuild everything. Plus, only good ratings merit more spending...whos to say that it will get good ratings? anyways, going to make a new video soon!
not a downer just a realist. lets see we have Winterfell, the Red Keep, the Dothraki sea, River Run, The Wall, 1000 extras, lots of roles to fill it all adds up. How may ppl do u know have HBO? only way i see the whole story being told is if it went full CG or animated. off topick asands i say your vid on mickey d's. . . spirit moves through all things
i really think that they're going to do a great job if Martin doesn't die one of this days, as S2ug said, Rome was great, and they said that they were going to spend more money in this production, but there isn't going to be many special effects, except for the battles and the creatures... also the HBO made Band of Brothers, one of my favourites series. Anyway i wish them the best and i hope a good tv series. i'm running out of words so if you want to discuss more about this contact me! see ya!
yeh good point here...band of brothers..forgot about that.....
in hbo's band of brothers there is lots of character based development,,that moves the series away from being totally fight scene based...so hopefully hbo can repeat that
Dont worry the series will be Great, they have a great writers David Benioff, Dan Weiss plus Martin, HBO have lots of experience in this kind of series look to ROME it was great, also HBO will have the help of BBC like they did on ROME . Too bad they have already find someone to do the part of Danny I think you would be perfect for it you are very beautiful. Pardon my writing its suck I now, I am from Portugal and I dont have lessons from English for ages Just 1 more thing TYRYON FU.G Rules
I do mean to be forward and disrespectful you are kinna cute´n´kinna hot´n´kinna sexy but all those otherwise admirable traits are dwarfed if not downright insignificant when put up against the fact that you have read and liked ASOIAF!
Also I am more of the belief that the dialog is very wellsuited for a series. it is more the internal hopes and fears of the individuals that can be hard to translate to the screen. If you watch Deadwood and Sopranos you will see that HBO are great at dialog
I dont think that with lord of the rings worked very well but it was something. I think The Song of Ice and Fire will be better for a series, because its like it was made for that! After all George RR Martin started out as a writer for television if i am not mistaken
I agree the books are better, but to say theirs no purpose in making a series out of it is not fair imo. Not everybody likes to read, and i respect that. So now everyone gets to experience a amazing story

You got it wrong!
stupidjunk878 1 month ago
I didn't watch much of this on TV, since i pictured the characters very differently and wanted it to stay that way. Plus you are totally right - the books are very long..building the characters and tension..shortening this process dumbs down everything. Regarding the visuals - violence and sex is a part of the book, but here it's been misused for shock value, being provocative etc..the books are so much more than that! just finished A Dance With Dragons!
Fuzorz 5 months ago
"I dont see the purpose of turning this into a tv series".... I bet you feel like a fool now that the show was a huge success. Anyway, the show is great for people who don't like to read (not me, many people like that though) yet still want to experience this awesome story.
AdoreYouInAshXI 5 months ago
@AdoreYouInAshXI not really..it couldve been bad or really good..turns out to be pretty good. still enjoy the books 10X more
asands123 5 months ago
@asands123 YOU may enjoy the books more and I agree, the books are much better, much more in depth however thousands of people who don't read would probably consider the show better and it's a great show as well. It's also put a lot more money into HBO's pockets and will continue to do so. So I'd say those were some pretty decent "purposes".

@AdoreYouInAshXI uhmmm ok.
asands123 5 months ago
ok - I agree (if you have imagination) you can't beat a book...however!...I rarely read, especially fiction...can't really say why, but it takes me forever to finish a book, though, in film format I LOVE the stories. I would rather they slowed things down in film and showed more, but then I wouldn't get bored where most people might, but I'm a very visual person, and coupled with the sound etc - AWESOME. It really shows when good graphics and sets are used. thumbs up! :)

Going to have read some of Martin's books now, after watching Game of Thrones. Well done review.
Metalaseylypse 7 months ago
Martin has a pretty huge hand in the making of the series. So long as that situation doesn't change, the series will be good. Whether or not you like books better than tv/movies is of course your opinion, i lean toward the book side myself most of the time, but you gotta admit, it was pretty awesome seeing the books come to the screen in a way that did the novels justice. It was kind of odd to see Tyrion portrayed by a guy who was anything less than an abomination, but still...win

Time constraints ... etc

And the best thing is that it gives me an excuse to read them all over again. My only complaint is that George has abandonned the series for what seems like 20 years. I'm worried he's gonna pull a Robert Jordan and croak before finishing the series.

@asands123 One episode a month for a year = one season. Unless you've watched other HBO series, you don't know how much airtime it actually is. Also, I understand what you're saying, but HBO makes fantastic sieries like The Wire and Deadwood. There is nothing dumbed down in them. On the contrary, because of episode limit, they know how to squeeze in a lot of information by good acting, intelligent dialogue and the masterful characters and their relationship with each other.
cannabisabuser 1 year ago
I think you bring up some good points. I also wonder how much the series will permanently alter my view of George R R Martin's world and all the characters I love and hate. Ken Kesey went to his grave having never watched Cuckoos Nest because he didn't want to forever envision RPM as Jack Nicholson. I never understood his reasoning until this show.
I will for the time being remain excited about the series. Anything to get my ASOIAF fix is a good thing.

Albeleo 1 year ago
I think if you were going to try to make the book into a series, HBO would be the way to go. Game of Thrones is possible to do as a series because the way the chapters are set up, it's very episodic. Each episode could touch on each different character. The only problem I see is people remaining dedicated to the continuity. But with DVR, TiVO, On Demand, Hulu, what have you, there's really no excuse. I do agree though, I don't think they planned for his gaps between publishing.
JohnBuckStrange 1 year ago
I don't think the series will be bad.
I don't want to believe the series will be bad. xD
ThePsychoMike 1 year ago
Martin is a fat pig. I guarantee that self obsessed jerk will never finish the series, so I've pretty much given up caring. There are other great authors out there. I just hate the fanboys that are licking this guys boots while he shits on them.
refuckulate420 1 year ago
@refuckulate420 Meh. He's a great author. It takes time to write a book--especially if you've got to have an actual job to support yourself, which allows for loads of distractions. Writing is fairly easy-- writing well is pretty difficult. There's a lot of trial and error, a lot of wasted time, a lot of bad ideas scrapped, character development planned carefully...
I'm not angry with him because I understand it's no easy feat creating a universe and a story that's actually good.
ThePsychoMike 1 year ago
@ThePsychoMike
Martins cares more about NFL, conventions and eating.
refuckulate420 1 year ago

ABrandNewName03 1 year ago
Hello,
I agee with you as well, novels and novel series such as A Song of Fire & Ice shouldnt be made into a tv series.
JayBobMoore 1 year ago
Martin used to write for TV and I believe he takes active part on the tv series.
Anyway most of HBO series have been great, with a good team this could really do justice to the books; obviously a book to tv translation can never be perfect, there are some things that have to be let go. I can't stand fans complaining they didn't add line 156 in page 50.

@Gentilegentry That is the most awesome thing about the book... You do not have this cliche storyline and main characters who will always be alright. The story even seems real, because in real life, good ppl suffer as much as the rest and in the end there are no good and evil, its just men and women with their own flaws... That is what makes the series so great and i hope that they will be able to replicate the complexity of the books in the series as close as possible
affilipelkar 1 year ago
if a series is made from a book, then the series should depict the book version not a modern broader audience version.
the series should be made so the fans that actually care about the book can connect to what the series really is about, and not just pick up scraps and crap from here and there like most series now adays.
if someone fucks this up i hope they die in a horrible and slow manner!

There going to make it so 1 season = 1 book, and most likely 1hr episodes thats 9hrs! more then enough time to do a very good job on turning the books into film.
stonewall554 2 years ago
A bit late but still worth writing.
SalokinX 2 years ago
Some scenes could be cut off and some characters could be removed without any trouble to the main story.
A series for each book, that means about 14:40 for each book (considering they go the usual 22 episodes per season). 15 hours is more than enough to reflect 600~700 pages, especially since some details that take space in the book are not necessary, like the description of the characters.
SalokinX 2 years ago
The series will eventually catch up to the book and then it will have to be canceled and continued 4 or 5 years later with a hole new cast (to replace the fast-growing teenagers).
I am in high hopes for this series and I really think it could work. We'll just have to wait and see what comes up.
By the way, I thought this video would be some joke or something, since, as cheesy as this sounds, you don't have the look of a person who likes fantasy books. That was a surprise.
SalokinX 2 years ago
it would have to be done in a series...the books are way too long to be made into a a movie of a mere 2 hours...even if they made one move per book it still wouldnt do it justice. im pretty confident that the series could be done but i just hope they do it right ;)
asands123 2 years ago
Uh... I said series, not movie :P
I think that books should never be made into movies, since 2 hours is not NEARLY enough. If it has to be made, 3 or 4 movies PER book would have to be necessary and maybe even that wouldn't be enough. But a series... That's a different story. 15 hours per book, I think it's manageable.
SalokinX 2 years ago
@asands123 Lotr was decent but alot was missing, if they'd made several movies about each book, they could have earned more, and taken more time to tell the story.
if this series is somewhat like what lotr turned out to be, then i'd be somewhat happy, but i think the volume and story of each individuall book would demand atleast 2 movies per book just to tell the story without loosing to much or making it seem to fast:)
INSANESUICIDE 1 year ago
If anything it needs to be made in to a movie. The problems though would be money, and the cast would have to be amazing. Like best actors avaliable in the WORLD amazing.
KyeHA7X 2 years ago
First, there is NO WAY ASoIaF could fit into a movie.
I agree with the cute girl that a tv series will naturally lose some of the depth and context of its characters but if any network could do it justice it would be hbo. I also really like the cast they have for the pilot.
I agree about Terry Goodkind- his books spiraled downhill after the 5th book. I kind of enjoyed his tv adaptation until they started completely raping the books' storyline, but i dont think martin will let that happen.
dandennis1 2 years ago
i enjoyed it when they raped his books..i thought some episodes were kinda interesting..esp the one about the other mother confessor...i really didnt give the series a chance and only recently watched the entire first season and some of the second season....it is a pretty horrible series but is worth watching ( i guess)
asands123 2 years ago
@dandennis1
Let's hope they don't turn out like the Goodkind debacle did.

Luffy327 2 years ago
i love his attention to detail but i think hes going overboard in a feast for crows. i feel like his attention to detail in the history of his world is overshadowing the actual plot of a feast of crows. i have the feeling during the book that its going absoultly nowhere. Im already 300 pages into the book and nothing significantly has changed at all with the plot!
asands123 2 years ago
I think the red wedding is one of the worst plot devices of all time. Not just because I don't like it but the whole northern army going up in flames without a survivor or a scrap of resistance left is difficult to swallow. Its tragedy for the sake of tragedy. Its one thing for robb to die in battle or by poison or by hidden dagger but quite another for his entire army and house to die with him. I understand that suspense is neccesary and that characters can't be percieved to be plot protected..
Luffy327 2 years ago
I have some problems with George RR martin one being the red wedding which I don't think has any historical precedent, the second being that aerys would have destroyed kings landing if Jaime hadn't killed him absolving the kingslayer and casting him in a new light. He kills off the very reasons that the fans follow the series. Robb is dead, Bran is crippled, Arya is blind, Eddard is also dead and what is left is Jaime Lannister and Brienne of tarth and the two survivors jon & tyrion.

Maybe he should finish A Dance With Dragons before he spends the rest of his natural life working on this TV series.
neondion9 2 years ago
i agree..the guy seems to work pretty slowly..i wonder if his time could better be spent on finishing the series though...
i do feel like asoiaf is his authors curse though...i mean if youve read dream songs by him, its full of series he started but never got around to working on
like many good authors he'll probably only be rememberd by ASOIAF by most ppl
asands123 2 years ago

MrAmericanpatriot18 2 years ago
Oh dont worry, football and Wildcards are all he spends time on anyways.

It's about time dont ya think?
markmtk 2 years ago
The thing about Martin, unlike many fantasy novels, is how focused it is on mediaeval realism, rather than hocus pocus. This makes it eminently more filmable. HBO have implied that they are focusing on a character based production (which is what the books are generally) which is good and the right way to go. The other book that focused on mediaeval realism turned into a film/tv series was Lord of the Rings and that was very well done (except the ending being too hollywood).
marshallmonty 2 years ago
yup i agree :) for all my skepticism, im still looking foward to the series
asands123 2 years ago
I hope HBO takes there time and take a lot of care in this series and not change the book. Keep it true to the book....we'll see....
TheChandler76 2 years ago
HBO usually does not make bad series but they will have a huge challenge with "Game of Thrones" because of it's immense depth and gritty nature. I am hoping for the best and it looks as though they are giving it a chance with the cast and budget. We shall see. And BTW easy on Harry Potter it's silly but fun.
millermc74 2 years ago
thats exactly my thoughts. and about harry potter, i knoooooooooooooow, but its still really cheesy looking! im gonna give it a chance when i have time..someday...then we shall see how wrong i am :)

Yay, a place to talk about ASoIaF!
Itsonlygargle 2 years ago
i think the cost of making SoIAF live action will be its downfall.
666SomethingKrazy9 2 years ago
someone gave you a downpoint but you have a really good point. Im going to argue in my next video that a problem will be cost production. If you look at ROME, it had great writers but making it real cost huge amounts of money..which is why (atleast i heard) when the studio burned down, it was too expensive to rebuild everything. Plus, only good ratings merit more spending...whos to say that it will get good ratings? anyways, going to make a new video soon!
asands123 2 years ago
not a downer just a realist. lets see we have Winterfell, the Red Keep, the Dothraki sea, River Run, The Wall, 1000 extras, lots of roles to fill it all adds up. How may ppl do u know have HBO? only way i see the whole story being told is if it went full CG or animated. off topick asands i say your vid on mickey d's. . . spirit moves through all things

ur right on a lot of points...they are going to have to cut out a lot of material.
im still optimistic though. i think grrm will have made efforts when approached by hbo to ensure that the dilouge comes first.
the fact that its a series and not a film gives more scope to the diolouge and 'build up' which u described ,,
still its going to be tricky and i just hope the things they do choose to cut out are done so wisley
casting seems good..im praying for sean connery for barristan selmy
acyzjpb 2 years ago
i really think that they're going to do a great job if Martin doesn't die one of this days, as S2ug said, Rome was great, and they said that they were going to spend more money in this production, but there isn't going to be many special effects, except for the battles and the creatures... also the HBO made Band of Brothers, one of my favourites series. Anyway i wish them the best and i hope a good tv series. i'm running out of words so if you want to discuss more about this contact me! see ya!
Deeeeeeivid 2 years ago
yeh good point here...band of brothers..forgot about that.....
in hbo's band of brothers there is lots of character based development,,that moves the series away from being totally fight scene based...so hopefully hbo can repeat that
good example

If you watch Deadwood and Sopranos you will see that HBO are great at dialog
eltorsogrande 2 years ago
I dont think that with lord of the rings worked very well but it was something. I think The Song of Ice and Fire will be better for a series, because its like it was made for that! After all George RR Martin started out as a writer for television if i am not mistaken
