You got that right Peggy! The purity of Sasha's spiral is simply unmatched. Gorgeous, stunning, and out of this world is what Sasha and her artistry is.
@Karosanyo YES seriously! No more perfecting that dopey-facial expression on that overdone spiral and instead ramp up the technicals in spins, steps, jumps, etc... things in which Kwan blissfully ignored... content with "I skate with my heart" gags to rake in the 6s for artistic impression. IMO a sport like skating has been considered a frufru joke for too long but thanks to COP, it involves tallying of points that finally lends it some deserved credibility.
@allenglandlawns Is that why ratings for this sport have gone down the last six years? Figure skating is DEAD. It's so DULL to watch EVERY program look the same. Kwan's jumps, spirals, footwork, lines and flexibility were good. Kwan's jumps, artisty, COE spiral and footwork were better than Sasha's. Sasha is the one the ignored her jumps (she could fall on her butt on every jump and still get a medal). Sasha and Irina NEVER gave a performance as great as Kwan's 1996, 2000 World performances.
@Karosanyo Nope it's bigger and better than ever! Ratings in Asia are through the roof and Evan is the reigning Olympic CHAMPION! Finally skating is a sport and Kween of Korruption can no longer flash that overdone spiral. If you want frufru and flashy skates, go hang out with the pros....ex-amateurs who don't bother doing the risky and dangerous moves bc all they need is to cultivate their showmanship (Kwan, anyone?)
@allenglandlawns LOL! Ratings in Asia??? Yes, THEIR skaters are doing great.... I'm talking about ratings in America... Even the rating in figure skating for the Olympics were down... Do you realize how juvenile and bitter that you sound? Sasha was the one that should have done these frufru events. She wouldn't have to do any triples in her program... Sasha could NEVER give a 7 triple performance at a major like Kwan did many times. Overdone spiral? Kwan's COE spiral WAS better than Sasha's.
@Karosanyo Oh American skating is doing quite well actually. Our reigning Olympic champion is Evan... I also believe America has earned its first ice dancing world champs just a few months ago... So yeah, figure skating is healthier than ever. Of course when Kwan is around, the only care in the world is money and TV ratings... not so much integrity and justice. Didn't the Harding garner TV ratings as well? Even so, Tonya did more for skating's popularity than Kwan ever did in 10 years.
@allenglandlawns I'm not talking about American skating doing well! I'm talking about rating for figure skating in American. Figure skating is a dead sport in America. Not so much integrity and justice? What the hell is wrong with you? Stop acting like your statements are valid and that you know how Michelle thinks and feels!!!! You have a VERY negative perception of Michelle. All because she asked for a pen? This was none of your business! How does that affect you? Get over it and move on!
@Karosanyo You mean TV ratings? I betcha that's the only thing that matters when Kwan is around... Money money money and not about medals and what not (if it were, petitions would occur every non-Olympic year as well). Of course she picked Torino as an opportunity for all that...playing on public sympathy... when her groin owie was acting up, she pulled out ASAP... not willing to embarrass herself further after robbing Emily the complete Olympic experience. No apologies or remorse whatsoever!
@allenglandlawns This popularity of figure skating is dead in America... Do you do this with everyone that you disagree with? You disagree with a chioce that Kwan made 5 years ago and you're STILL tearing her apart? You you always make up negative thoughts in your head about people that you disagree with. How did that choice affect you personally? Stop acting like you know Michelle Kwan and how she feels and thinks!
@Karosanyo Umm nope... you are one in few I like engaging in debate with despite our headbutting. I simply don't understand why you think I'm 'tearing' Kwan apart. It's just a harmless opinion I have and I don't make any derogatory remarks about race or religion (which is the real crap that have no place anywhere esp from me). What do you get out of these personal attacks about Kwan? How long do you plan on doing this?
@Karosanyo What I get? You could ask the same thing about everyone who still posts on these videos. It's been what? 10 years and you get all kinds of posters here? I, for one, am grateful that these videos are out and gives everyone the opportunity to express their opinions...popular or not. Michelle Kwan has no relevance in my life but I love to post as I see you do too and I don't have any immediate plans to stop.
@WickedProductions100 True this is Sasha's video but I don't take orders frothing Kwanatics and I have the right to comment what and where I please so buzz off.
@allenglandlawns Excuse me? I'm not a Kwanatic. Sasha is my favourite skater. I just get tired of seeing all this Michelle talk period on Sasha videos, where we should be appreciating her beautiful line and exquisite spins and spirals. No need to talk about Michelle and her style here. So don't tell me to buzz off.
@WickedProductions100 I apologize and you are right... this is Sasha's video and this was beautiful skating as usual from her. Kwan probably has no place on this board and I will cease making comments about her here.
Just look at how awful her jumps were here. Winning a silver with a performance like this? Michelle Kwan's six triple performances in 1997 and 2002 are worthy silver medal winning performances (she even did a 3/3 in '97). Sasha was so propped up.
@Karosanyo That final spin sequence is as beautiful and technically difficult as you will ever see in skating. Michelle could not come close to this, sorry, not going to happen. Sasha deserved every bit of that silver for this performance and no, she definitely was not the "propped up one". That was Michelle.
@HowsaBowsaYowsa I always stated that Sasha had better spins than Michelle... Michelle had better artistry, jumps and spirals (Her artistry was much more versatile than Sasha's). Sasha could NEVER come close to giving a perfect 7 triple performance at a major like Kwan did at the 1996, 2000-2001 Worlds (two with the triple-triple). Michelle Kwan was never propped up. That WAS Sasha Cohen....
@HowsaBowsaYowsa Absolutely correct! Sasha is a beautiful skater... amazing AND difficult spins...the flexibility, the athleticism...mind boggling. Kwan would need some serious physical rehab if she attempted a biellmann or I-spins Sasha does...I guess she finally got injured when COP forced her to up the ante. And the Kween of 6 is certainly the most propped up skater in history!
@allenglandlawns False. The most propped up female skaters were Oksana, Witt and Sasha. Kwan earned all of her medals (she never won a World or Olympic medal with less than 5 triples). LOL, Just because Kwan didn't do that ugly biellmann made Sasha superior? A lot of women can't do them. Sasha's jumps SUCKED and Irina's artistry and true spirals SUCKED. I think that Kwan was capable of doing an I-spin (her flexibility was very good). Unlike Sasha, Michelle had to JUMP CLEANLY to EARN her medals.
@Karosanyo I suppose that's why Kwan was SO successful under COP? Hardly and nope! Under a fair and level playing field, REAL athletes are finally recognized and the pretenders are exposed. Too bad Shelly's groin booboo spared her the embarrassment of actually paying for her lack of skill under COP. No matter to her...she made off with the cash and facetime she wanted. Everyone else including Sasha competed with honor, dignity, courage, and EARNED whatever they got thanks to COP.
@allenglandlawns Kwan only competed ONCE under COP! She had an AWFUL QR, a good SP, and a mediocre LP (she fell and doubled two jumps). She still came in fourth with a program that wasn't COP friendly in her FIRST try under the new system. Sasha didn't "earn" her silver at the 2006 Olympics (her jumps there were atrocious). Michelle Kwan is the one who competed with honor, dignity, courage. She EARNED ALL of her medals. Kwan NEVER won a medal at world level with less than 5 triples. COP sucks.
@Karosanyo I disagree. COP is a wonderful addition to the SPORT of figure skating. =) No more half-assing through moves and skating can finally be taken SERIOUSLY. As for Kwan competing with honor, dignity, and courage those were nowhere to be seen in her booing her marks or "I am Kwan and I need no coach. I can win the Olympics on my own bc I am Kwan" attitude or how about slithering off after she realized she didn't want to make an idiot of herself again.
@allenglandlawns LOL! half-assing through moves and skating can finally be taken seriously? By fallng all over the place and STILL winning medals? COP DESTROYED figure skating. Every program looks the same. So what if Kwan disapproved of her scores (she only did that twice). Irina stormed off and cried when Kwan beat her at the 2000-2001 Worlds. Both of them are human beings. Not everyone is perfect. And that's Kwan's business about her going without a coach (YOU do NOT know the whole story).

@Karosanyo And that once under COP told the whole, sad, cold truth of her skating. Wiggle and jiggle isn't gonna cut it and you have to be a real athlete like a Sasha or an Irina if you want to challenge for top honors. Maybe if she wasn't so arrogant to skip the GP series (which were testing out COP in the days leading to Torino) but for her, it's the 6s that bring in the cash and fame she wants.
Since people INSIST on mentioning Kwan in this video...Kwan finally ran up against a scoring system that wasn't impressed by her so called artistry and grace and didn't even make the podium here...that would be the wannabe aka Michelle the Mediocre:)
@getrealandsee This was Kwan's ONLY competition under COP with a LP program that wasn't COP friendly... She had an awful QR, an okay SP, and a mediocre LP... Michelle Kwan gave THREE seven triple performances out of five five for her Worlds titles (two with the triple-triple). She give six triple performances for her other two. Sasha's jumps here were so shaky and poor. She could NEVER give a seven triple performance like Kwan did at Worlds or the Olympics. Kwan IS a superior skater.
@anubethc45 Anyone who calls Michelle Kwan's skating mediocre doesn't have eyes. You don't have to be a fan of hers and you can criticize her lack of technical content all you want, but that statement just makes you sound silly. Most of what she did do she did very well, although I think some of her spin positions could have been improved. Sort of like most of Sasha's landings. ;D
@anubethc45 Well, that's sort of another problem. I'm not sure how much contotionism has to do with other elements. I don't think Sasha's problems can be blamed for it because her technique was good and she landed jumps consistently in practice. With her it's more mental. I just hate how everybody feels they have to do it in their spiral/spin positions. Obviously skaters need to be flexible, but let them inject originality again! Kerrigan had a lovely spiral, and it looked nothing like Sasha;s.
Sasha popularized the extremely stretched spiral and spin positions, and I would say she is really the only one thus far to complete them successfully. Many do them well, but they all look somewhat awkward. Sasha's contortions were a part of her. That's why they were graceful. They mimic her instead of making the moves their own, although that's not really their fault as the scoring system discourages originally. Flexibility worked for Sasha; it doesn't and shouldn't have to work for everyone.
@frostdiamond1 Skaters must always strive for beautiful positions. And while many of Sasha's were perfection, it was also a style that worked for her and doesn't work for everyone. Michelle wasn't as flexible but also had a lovely spiral that was completely her own. The same with Nancy Kerrigan. Sarah Hughes also had some gorgeous spins, especially her camel and layback. A true genius makes each move her/his own. I wish we saw more of that nowadays.
@frostdiamond1 Actually, Michelle's spiral was superior to Sasha's. Michelle had much better edging and speed (Sasha's were slow and her edging was mediocre). Sasha's were just a bit more flexible. I have never seen better spirals than Michelle's EOE at the 1998 World Pro.
@Karosanyo I know there is a great debate about whether Michelle's or Sasha's is superior. I've never entered into it because I personally admire both for different reasons. What I don't like is how skaters are kept from expressing their own individuality in the element. You don't see innovative and signature moves like you did in the '90s/'00s.
She blew her second chance at a world gold; first in 2004 and here in 2005. She has superior technique and artistry. Her spiral is unmatched and her spins are fabulous. I have only seen her do one clean long program and it was at the 2004 marshalls world challenge. I want to know why she could never put the whole package together.
@skaterrater94 I dont think she was ever going to win here even totally clean. Slutskaya was on home ice, had all the momentum from an undefeated season, and had an inspired performance.
In spite of her lack of consistency on jumps, Sasha has the most gorgeous jump technique when she doesn't fall. Straight back going in, tight and fast in the air, and beautiful flowing edge out. She's especially good on edge jumps, and almost never fails a loop or salchow.
her back is so straight in the air when the jump goes right... once the commentator said that her back is so straight he could iron his shirt on it lol. it's true!!! i wish I had her perfect posture!!!!!
Beautiful music to go with a beautiful skater... I am happy she's vying for the next Olympics! I always felt she was one of the most talented skaters of all time, but that her inconsistencies kept her from achieving all she's capable of. I know she seems to have a big ego, and I might not get along with her in real life, but in terms of her skating, I can't deny that she is fantastic.
maravillosa sasha, su punto débil, los saltos, pero marcó una época en el patinaje artistico con su estilo exquisito, su elegancia, y su capacidad de interpretación, esta una de sus grandes actuaciones
the lift she has into her double axel is beautiful.

People are commenting like she died. She took the silver medal! That's a great acc.

Kerrigan had a lovely spiral, and it looked nothing like Sasha;s.

despite all those "awkward moments", this is still one of sasha's best free skates. her artistry here is just outstanding.

Ironically even this performance most likely would have won her the Olympic title the following year.

@skaterrater94
I guess we will never know... she would be too perfect if she put the whole package together, it would be unfair to all the other skaters lol!
Maybe it's psychological??? I really dunno coz she's got the strength, the technique, and the skills!!!!
triciamatsuda 1 year ago
@skaterrater94 I dont think she was ever going to win here even totally clean. Slutskaya was on home ice, had all the momentum from an undefeated season, and had an inspired performance.

I love her so much, even with faulty jumps. Her spins and spirals are superior to anyone's; her presence on the ice is unparalleled!

Her triple flip save reminds me of Nastia Liukin's beam save. Even when they mess up, they both still look awesome doing it. ha.

In spite of her lack of consistency on jumps, Sasha has the most gorgeous jump technique when she doesn't fall. Straight back going in, tight and fast in the air, and beautiful flowing edge out. She's especially good on edge jumps, and almost never fails a loop or salchow.
internetaddict 2 years ago 27
her back is so straight in the air when the jump goes right... once the commentator said that her back is so straight he could iron his shirt on it lol. it's true!!! i wish I had her perfect posture!!!!!

Beautiful music to go with a beautiful skater... I am happy she's vying for the next Olympics! I always felt she was one of the most talented skaters of all time, but that her inconsistencies kept her from achieving all she's capable of. I know she seems to have a big ego, and I might not get along with her in real life, but in terms of her skating, I can't deny that she is fantastic.

that was amazing you could really see her happy and joyus
just look at that face the expression on that spiral!
just imagine wht a thrill it wouldve been to be her at that moment.
