  • Awesome song! So very sad.

  • One of the most talented Chinese musician/composer/songwriter/artist I've ever known.

Her music sometimes can sounds strangely so beautiful,

as if not from this earthly world,..but sent from highest Heaven/another spiritual dimension..

    Greeting from Indonesia~

  • 现在歌都展现不出现代人的内心,没有代表,有时候连歌词都听不懂。。我感觉不管过多少年都会喜欢发自内心唱出的歌。王菲,如果你晚生10几年,我们还能有机会现场听你的歌那多好。。

  • Change soldier into pawn

  • My english translation part 2

I am like a chess piece

Advance or retreat in your control

I am not the sole general in your eyes

    But rather an inconspicuous soldier

I am like a chess piece

I come and go without my own control

No taking back your actions: you neverdid hesitate

Yet you have me in the palm of your hand

  • My english translation part 1

Want to leave the territory that you control

Yet I enter your set up battle

I have neither a sturdy defense

Nor an escape route to retreat

Want to escape the traps you've layed

    Yet I enter another predicament

I have neither the courage to call the win or loss

    Nor the luck to escape

  • Oh, sure, I love this song. Thanks Faye Wong!

  • Absolutely wonderful!!!

  • this is one of my favorite of hers, thx for uploading :)

though i think "Pawn" would be a more apt translation of the title.

  • You came to the wong place

  • a true classic for the Chinese music scene...unfortunately the music scene does not have anyone sounds as good as Faye now..

  • love this song =O i wish there were more talented artists like Faye Wong in hk =P

  • CLASSIC!! sadly after Faye " retires" , there's no great female artist like her in Hong Kong...

  • @confessedgal she came back at the CCTV 2010 chun wan, look up legend, it's AMAZING

  • 以前的歌比起如今,歌词都很美有意境,但篇幅都比较短。

  • 經典的歌曲

  • AHHHHH! At long last, I have finaly found this song by her. Fei Wang. ^O^ Thank you soo much for uploading this great memory!!! ^___^d

  • Most of her songs are wonderful, you can search for other songs too. I don't know if you can konw the meaning of this song, at least, the rhythm is very good.

She is the best singer in my heart, and I am very sad after she retired.

  • this song is just impossible to sing. just impossible.

    that explains its greatness =)

  • 自从王菲退出,华语歌坛就没有亮点了!!

  • @Joy1365 I have to agree with that.

  • my mandarin teacher taught us using thiz song

  • such a beautiful song - first heard it 10 years ago, still love it so much.

  • hao ke lian.... ke shi hen hao ting!

  • Still like it,even it's a old song.

  • 十四年后,还是一样好听~

  • beautiful!!

  • 這首歌拿過channel v 金曲金獎

  • 我也想做王菲的棋子.....

  • q bella canción!!!

  • 經典啊......

  • Faye is the best..

    菲是最好的!

  • Good. What is Faye doing these days?

  • she's pregnant

  • no way! i thought she signed a new contract because i've been waiting forever for her to come out with a new album =(

  • oh, she just had a miscarriage

  • i miss faye very much

  • I simply love this song...

  • Yueju Hua acridine would like to tell you, all the way since the only thing I like is that you

  • 我不是你眼中唯一將領只是不起眼的小兵

  • i luv faye wong's voice

  • 啥时才能复出呢??

  • very old song, i heart it in my first grade of hight school. that time it is not cd, just walkman and the cassette. but better than listened here. i like faya's song.

  • 。。。

  • I love this Faye Wang's song, chess. It is saying that I am kind of like a chess, which is under controlled. I do not have any option...

  • To survive, everybody needs to follow the rules as chess.

  • good thx

  • When I read all these ping pong comments with yashil17 I wanted to laugh. People, just ignore this ignorant North American idiot who is probably only a teenage spoilt brat who knows close to nothing. Why argue with such "xiao ren". No need to lower yourselves to that dirt level.

We are here to enjoy Faye's music. She is awesome!

  • 好好聽呀, 永遠天后!!!!!!!!!

  • This is still my favourite song ever!

  • 我爱王菲

  • 我爱王菲

  • Dear Faye,

We miss you and wait for you. Hey!Please come back to sing a good song for us.Wait.......you Forever!

  • I love this song. I bought it at Amazon. an MP3. Really. It is on my player. Faye is with me everywhere. Beautiful soul

  • wow im kind of in a bind now lol im part chinese, thai, cambodian and japanese so not sure where i stand haha

  • you are what you are, silly question. you don't get to pick where you stand

  • um jsut so u know dryweterase not saying go is japanese or anything but jsut saying that wikipedia not very reliabale source bc it can be updated by anyone so if someone go on there saying something like go was originated in europe they will most likely change it even if it not true

  • Considering the fact that Japanese have always maintained their position Rape of Nanking never happened and their heinous crimes during WWII was actually an attempt to help the Chinese, considering the fact that Japanese even altered their history books to support this lie (as been reported by CNN a couple of years ago).

I can only say, yea, I probably can's say much for the accuracy of Wikipedia, when history books can be changed in such malignant way despite of worldwide protest.

  • awesome

  • I just love this song. I don't care about all you who post negative comments about Faye. I bought the song from Amazon. Thank God for Amazon that they are selling this. I JUST LOVE IT. and I don't care about all you other negativos. F OFF

  • the song actually says that she is like a pawn inside a game of chinese chess. being moved forward and backward only by that particular player, and also moving into situations that has be pre-setup... she has got no chance to run or hide...

  • i dunno wat any of this means...

  • Bellissima sia la canzone che la cantante!!!!

  • best song

  • fuck u did u ever play an actual staratagy game?

  • dude seriously stop being such a bitch. first of all u never played chinese chess or go so stfu. lol i wonder how the hell do u know that chinese chess has nothing to do with strategy if u never play it? btw learn to stop being an asshole and repect other's opinions also work on ur shitty spelling and grammar. have a nice day.

  • You can't even spell strategy right, let alone play a strategy game.

  • wow, come down, we should play chess if u know how to play then i'll tell u all about strategy

  • strategy has a meaning in the dictionary... game also does... when you mix these words, you could make it mean whatever you want... Final Fantasy Tactics, Battleship... Chess... the game of Risk... now who do you think you are to define the genre yourself and insult other people and cultural refenrences such as chinese checkers? i'n not even asian and i feel insulted when i read comments like this

  • wtf are u talking about? chinese chese is way more fun than international chess. if u r talking about GO but then GO is still better than international chess if u know how to play

  • god u r stupid international chess is more popular cs most of the world knows how to play it. that doesnt make it more fun. i bet u dont even know how chinese chess work and ur here talking bullshits. just like international checkers are more popular than chinese checkers but does that make it more fun? stfu and think before u talk asshole

  • wow, it's only that u suck at chess or u never played chess, and go is shit, the point of the game is to capture all the spaces, how is that fun?

  • and more to that, chinese chess is not GO.

wait given your low brain capacity you probably would have shoot off your mouth and called me i have no idea what and tell me wtf go, dun make me laugh.

GO is a board game with the aim of surrounding the opponent.

Chinese chess is not GO and is rather similar to chess

  • LOL YASHIL, like anyone gives a shit about what YOU say.

  • wow, than what do u say about all the coments these guys made to me, dumbass

  • Please at least try to hide your ignorance.

Who told you that go is Japanese? It actually originated in China just as Chinese chess did. Just because there is no adjective "Chinese" in front, doesn't mean Japanese (or Korean for that matter can claim things as their own. If they are that proud, at least show off something that is really theirs. Cultural thieves.

  • The previous response was to yashil17

  • wow, i actual saw go at a book of almost all the games of the world, and i saw go in the content, so i went to the page it was on and i read it and it said that go is Japanese, i don't judge ppl, because i've been judged myself.

  • Which book did you read? Google Wikipidia.

  • i have to find it, but if i do find it i'll tell u, but i don't think the book is that famous.

  • "The earliest written reference of the game is commonly taken to be the historical annal Zuo Zhuan[3] (c. 4th century BC[4]), referring to a historical event of 548 BC. It is also mentioned in Book XVII of the Analects of Confucius (c. 3rd century BC[4]) and in two of the books of Mencius[5] (c. 3rd century BC[4]). In all of these works, the game is referred to as yì (弈), a name that is no longer in use today."

From Wiki and various other sources

  • in wikipedia it says that it's orgin is from both China and Japan and Korea, but scinece China is the oldest it probly came from there.

  • ?!!!!!

Which part were you looking at?! The first paragraphs say

"Despite the fact that Go originated in ancient China, it is commonly known in the West by its Japanese name, Go. This stems from the fact that early Western players learned of the game from Japanese sources. As a result, many Go concepts for which there is no ready English equivalent have become known elsewhere by their Japanese names. "

  • oh no, i just saw the content and u know where said orgin in china and then it says "spread to korea and japan", which means that it orignated from china but then spreaded to japan and korea

  • You do realize that about 95% of Korean and Japanese culture all originated from China, or more specifically, it's "Kingdoms". China is over thousands of years old; it is one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world, with hundreds of different ethnic groups. From clothing, to religion, and language is all ADOPTED from China by different regions in Asia. Without Chinese culture, there would be no Japanese or Korean culture.

  • dude i know that. Korea and Japan and most parts of the pacific was owned by china. in asia there was only 2 countries that had a civilization, Iran/Persia and China. and the chinese civilization and all civilization existed 500 yeares ago not 1000. and language was adopted from china by the pacifians

  • wow you really slept in all yer history lessons, huh?

according to you, the chinese civilization exists ONLY since 500 years ago?

    How bout....at least 2000 XDDD

Stay awake in some History lessons, they are interesting, actually.

  • ok, actually i was wrong at first, but don't get so happy know kuskhul, u were wrong too, the chinese civilization was 5000 years old just like all the other civilizations, which were only 5 including china. and in n.america they don't talk about the history of the 5 civilizations, they only talk about their own stupid history, i'm in grade 9 though. and i love history, don't judge u piece of shit

  • is it true that they only teach us history in higher levels?? right now i'm only getting us history and it isn't as nearly as aweing as world history. but it's still nice with my teacher teaching it--HISTORY ROCKS!! with my history teacher. YAY MS.LOGOTHETIS!!

  • yeah, that's cool, right then

  • but i find that korean writing to be a bit more different then chinese compared to japanese kanji. korean writing is... less similar to the original chinese when you look at kanji... how about mongolia? never herd much history from there.

  • Chinese language is called "Han Yu", which contains many dialects, but one concrete writing system using Chinese characters. Japan has three writing systems, Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji. Kanji is the Chinese character system of writing. Korea has two writing systems, Hangul (which is like Katakana in that it's based on annunciation), and Hanja, which is a formal writing system, which also uses Chinese characters.

  • ...normally when i see korean writing, it looks similar to chinese, but i don't really see that much resemblence. spare me the basic lecture; i am chinese, so i know a bit more then the average person.

  • im not arguing with your thought but what u mentioned above is a bit different. korean people sometimes use chinese letters which is not written as a formal. the only reason korean uses chinese letter is that some old people try to make students learn it.

and i think the 3 countries of korea, japan and chain which have own letter is greater than any other wester countries which only use latin alphabet.

  • 중국어는 '华语'라고 말인데요..

  • lol lest learn to spell properly n place the rite words

  • wtf? what r u talking about, even u r riting like this shit slang

  • I see... So shall we convert to a much more formal way of penning down our thoughts?

Let me repeat my sentence, "Atleast learn to spell properly and place the correct words into the right places."

For example, strategy is spell this way and not some alternative staratagy,

  • wow, i've seen how ppl write in youtube, but i never seen riting before, and that's a bad example for ur sentance

  • "spelled this way"

  • and hear instead of here

  • both chinese chess have a symmetrical line up

(chiness chess is more symmetrical) which makes the game balanced and each player holds equal advantages in the game.

Wait i juz rmb... lol y m i tryin to enlighten this retard, lol forget it

  • the chess they are talking about is GO.

    great music. Faye forever.

  • I think they are talking about Chinese Chess

in GO, the chess pieces cannot move forward or backward

so I think the translation of "棋子" should be "pawn"

  • Chinese chess or International Chess? All different.

  • What is her Elo rating?

  • 2,800!

  • Yeah, "chess piece" is the best translation, not pawn. Qi = chess, Zi = (roughly) piece or part. Go look in Chinese dictionary, it's definitely not pawn. In fact, she uses the word 'pawn' during the song, which is 'xiao bing'

  • which album does this come from of hers?

  • For those non-Chinese speaking fans, I try to translate the lyrics for you

  • Wishing to leave your commandind area, but instead, walking towards the war zone which you've arranged;

    I don't have strong defense, and do not have a way to retreat;

    Wishing to escape from the traps you have organized, but instead, falling into another difficult situation;

I don't have the courage to decide the winner, and do not have the luck to escape.

  • Thank you!

I listened to the song many times but never knew this.

  • I am like a piece of chess, you decided my moves;

I am not a General of yours, and am only a meaningless Private.

    I am like a piece of chess, I cannot make moves myself;

You never hesitate to make your moves, but I am controlling completely by you.

  • Your translation is excellent. Just one note. the name of the song is "Pawn". Therefore the term you use "piece of chess" should be "pawn".

  • I agree, it should be Pawn.

  • I believe the name of the song is Chesspiece actually.

  • I agree

  • Absolutely wonderful, many thanks for making this available :)

  • Wow, very inspiring song. So beautiful

  • so lovely

  • Gosh.. so long ago the MTV.. i missed it so much. Thanks for uploading!

  • I love this song, like all of her other songs. I can't decide which one is my most favorite, because all of them are! I've heard this song many times.

  • OMG! I love this song too!! Does anyone have a link where I can get the pingying version of the lyrics as well as a translation? Thanks!

  • Does anybody know the pinyin title of this song?

Because IMO, this is one of the "better-sounding" (not cliche), actually, BEST Chinese songs I've ever heard!

  • does anybody know the pinyin title of this song?

This is, IMO, one of the "better", actually, BEST Chinese song I've ever heard!

  • Thank you for the vid. This is my favourite Faye song, i was so moved by the lyrics when i first heard it. It's beautiful but sad.

  • I love the old songs from Wang Fei much more than her new ones!
