  • One of the best 'westerns' of the period. Very fair.... some Natives unfortunately played by non-natives but that was common at the time and they did involve some authentic Native people. And at least they had it written into the opening narration by Stewart that it's in english so we can understand it which somehow makes the Indians speaking english a lot more tolerable haha.

  • @ShawDAMAN

i believe any worthy actor could fit into any role in a movie.

David Carradine acted as a Chinese (Shaolin monk) in the Kung Fu TV series.

like i'd said before, no problem about that. i'd enjoyed watching those Kung Fu episodes.

  • @vincentyeo88 I would mostly agree, it's just that so many of the non-Indian actors in so many westerns of that era *didn't* fit very well haha.

  • @ShawDAMAN

haha, i know that! but this video clip isn't a documentary about native Americans.

you know making a movie is a business for profit, and a producer has to find a popular actor to play that leading role to make a box-office hit.

  • Could it be?! This video is actually free of Skyrim jokes.

  • sounds like all quiet on the western front

  • @vincentyeo88. Actually he had worked so hard toward the role and had counted on doing the part so much that when he was rejected he returned to Hong Kong and there found out he was famous for his Green Hornet Kato roll and was starred in his first Kung Fu movie. The rest is history.

  • @mvies77

oh i see. thank you for the information.

  • vincentyeo88. I would understand that it would be very wrong to only allow a white man to play a role due to prejudice or actually it is called stupidity. But to never allow a white man to play another race is just as prejudicial. The person who can bring the true depth, honesty, integrity to the role should be chosen. Although Carradine played the part very well it was outrageous that Bruce Lee, who actually originated it and was first choice was not allowed because he looked "too oriental".

  • @mvies77

thank you for sharing this information with me and the viewers.

i'd read sometime ago that Bruce Lee was offered that role but he'd rejected it.

  • To pan a movie because a white man is playing an Indian is silly. It is called acting. They either play one realistically or not. You do not have to be a German, etc to act as one. Jimmy Stewart is still considered one of the most honorable, respected and well liked actors of Hollywood and as an American.

  • @mvies77

    you're absolutely correct!

David Carradine acted as a Chinese in the Kung Fu TV series. no problem about that and i'd enjoyed watching those Kung Fu episodes.

  • hi there im a little desperate right now and i was hoping you could help me. a while back i saw this cool war movie between these solders in red uniform (possibly british) fighting these indians with guns countless times the indians would charge at them with a sharp object and what looked like a featherd sheild which didnt work so well now a later time in the battle the indians had guns and were shooting from the bushes if anyone knows the name of this movie please tell me what its called

  • @bowlchamp411

    Could be the film 'Zulu'?

  • @RichardEldon: Jimmy Stewart was a well known actor at the time so why would a nobody actor be giving him orders? Just wondering.

  • @RichardElden

Would you say this is an early version of Avatar? same story and all. Cameron did remixed this movie with Star Wars, Dances with Wolves, Man Named Horse, Dune, Nausicaa, Fantastic Planet, Ferngully, Heavy Metal, Princess Mononoke, Last of the Mohicans and Willow. don't you agree?

  • @RichardElden we will just have to agree to disagree. I have seen too many examples of people using "the race card" because they hate someone. Chris Matthews thinks the tea party is racist. People called President Bush racist b/c of Hurricane Katrina, even though he is good friends with Condoleeza Rice. I like Morgan Freeman, but I guess I could be accused of being racist for not liking Jay-z. I have heard two sides to the incident you are referring to. I choose to believe the other side.

  • @RichardElden I guess someone's opinion doesn't mean much to me if they don't have proof to back it up. News people can twist things all they want to make someone look bad. was this guy fired because he was black? or was it for some other reason? It's a pretty weak argument if this is the only example people can give. watch on youtube Lawanda Page (a black woman) "roasting" Jimmy Stewart. she says he's a nice guy and a fine actor and she's his fan. then he graciously gives her a kiss.

  • @RichardElden I don't know who Hal Kanter is. People who disagree with President Obama are accused of being racist. Left-wing people accuse conservative people of being racist all the time, but that doesn't mean they are racist. You could make an argument for Mel Gibson who has made racist comments, but until I hear an actual quote from Stewart, I won't believe it. Stewart was a conservative person, so the more I think about it, the more I'm not surprised people would accuse him of that.

  • Boots, chaps and cowboy hats…. nothing else matters.

  • I am a distant relative of Jimmy Stewart thru my grandmother who is also a Stewart

i was taught by my grandmother the true values to use in life. and i noticed that Jimmy had good values also. Yes he did not shy away when it came to serving his country, and as for his acting he has his style. just like other actors like Burt Lancaster they had their own styles. people can copy them but they cant be them

R.I.P. Jimmy, glad to have shared time on the earth with you.

  • @RichardOhKaNoi

thank you for sharing your information with the viewers.

  • Jimmy Stewart, one of the last great actors of our time. Combat veteran and retired air force general also. All of his westerns are fantastic, winchester 73 is his best.

Actors today like depp or pitt couldnt carry this mans garbage out.

  • thanks Vincent, I don't like arguing with people, but I get a little defensive sometimes and I don't like people attacking others when there's no proof of their accusations. Everything I've read and seen about James Stewart has shown me that he had good values like God, family, and country and nothing has given me the impression that he was a racist. The claims some people have made don't have any merit to them and it bothers me b/c some people believe whatever other people post!

  • @stephaniejane81

Stephanie, all viewers' comments are welcome whether or not they are right or wrong. i will delete any comment that uses vulgar words.

you have the right to be defensive about what you believe to be correct, and challenge any viewer's wrong comment to show proof.

  • umm, good Lord! Will people please stop spreading lies about James Stewart being a racist? accusing someone of being racist when they were not is just as hateful as being a racist. do your research and make sure you're not misunderstanding information before you make such a strong accusation of someone. watching the media these days I realize just how easy it is to take something someone said or did out of context and twist things to make that person look bad. knock it off.

  • @stephaniejane81

good understanding! thank you for sharing your point of view.

actors in those olden days had to act out some nasty roles even though they might not like them.

their screen roles did not reflect their personality.

  • Grat movie, i saw this in class back in 1992 when i was 10 years old and blew me away. It's one of James Cameron's favorite westerns since he was a kid and i believe that this movie is the true inspiration behind Avatar along with Dune by Frank Herbert and Nausicaa, i mean BA was the film that inspired both Dances with Wolves and Avatar. If you watch this movie and Avatar back to back then you'll find similarities.

  • @Johnlindsey289

    thank you for the information.

  • @vincentyeo88

Have you seen Avatar? very much Broken Arrow in space.

  • @Johnlindsey289

    no, not yet.

  • @Johnlindsey289

back in the early 1970s, there was a blockbuster Western called Kill Them All And Come Back Alone, starring Chuck Conners and Peter Finch.

i can't find this movie on DVD and if you know of any website that has any clip of it, please let me know. i really miss this movie even though i had watch it twice in the cinema in those early years.

  • @vincentyeo88

Maybe it should come to DVD. You should definitely rent Avatar and you'll find it to be very similar to Broken Arrow since Cameron made a Sci-fi western influenced by this classic.

  • @Johnlindsey289

sure, i will watch this movie.

  • It's ironic that James Stewart was a huge racist in real life.

  • @JuanMacready He was not racist.

  • @Guilhermecorto Yes he was.

  • @JuanMacready It was not! Watch the documentary "Directed by John Ford" where it is revealed because Stewart was called a racist.

  • @Guilhermecorto Stewart had actor Hal Williams fired from his NBC show in 1971 just because the guy was black.

  • It appears that the hardest thing is to look at the film in its time.. It was 1950, and, we were on our way into the madness of the McCarthy era.. Being older than some of you, I know just a little about those times.. Look at the film.. Along with the Native-Americans played as human beings, there's an interracial love story; highly unusual, for those times, even if the actress is caucasion, who plays her.. This a movie, not a documentary.. See it for what it is..

  • This is one of my all time favorite movies. Thanks for posting this video.

  • @momkat201

    you're most welcome.

  • Voice overs really should have stayed with Film-noir, it sounds so strange in westerns.

  • exelent brava good

  • Iam Real Disapointed in the Values People Have That Have Made So Many Negative remarks about a Man that made

the Movies of those eras a Part of american Heritage. Just Enjoy Being Blessed by Him, Let God Judge Not us.

  • @JayCares53 those people who'd made negative remarks don't deserve to enjoy free stuff. i am glad that you have made a wise statement.

  • how is an apache supposed to be fluent in english under those situations?

  • Hahahha, yeah right, like that's the MAIN goof and inconsistency in this category of westerns...these movies have only basic story, acting and cinematography on their side, the rest is pretty much laughable...and Brando may have been a fat talented pig who didn't much care about acting, but he was right protesting and shedding a light on the portrayal of Indians in Westerns...I mean it's terrible...I like James Stewart, but the movie is ridiculous.

  • I have a question out there for anyone who knows the answer to please let me know...

Jimmy Stewart and Bette Davis were in a film as a couple of seniors who decided they wanted to take their lives together...does anyone know the name of this movie? done in the 70's I think.

  • It was a TV movie made in 1982 called "Right of Way".

  • Did we know..

Actor Jimmy Stewart was a B17 pilot. He was already an Oscar nominated actor when he finally joined the AAF. "Finally" because he was rejected due to his low weight. He hired a body builder to gain weight but was rejected again. Third time he begged the clerk into letting him please pass. He flew to Schweinfurt, Germany, the raid where 600 men and 60 planes were lost. Stewarts last combat flight in a bomber was over Vietnam in a B52.

Retired as a decorated Brig. General

  • Yes but was also a huge racist.

  • Damn, i remember this movie. It reminds me on my childhood when i loved Indians(all kids from the block made bows and arrows playing Indians). Indians were always respected in Europe. I always felt real freedom watching movies with Indians-i seriously don't use term Native Americans 'cause word Indian it is not insulting here. I noticed, one of the arrows had modern nock;-).Great movie.

I don't remember were they Mimbrenos, Chirikahua or some other Apache group in this movie?

  • This is a great film.

  • No it's not.

  • This is a fab film !!!!!

  • Where's the rest of the movie?

  • when i was a child, i din"t know how to act as a white child, so what i seen on the tv. the way natives acted i acted like that. i din"t know any better.

  • lol thats bull shit. you just want to be a native american and its to bad that your white because your obviously not happy with it. be happy with your heritage and race. plus natives dont act much different than us.

  • this is one great movie one of my favorite showing native americans as real human beings not blood thirsy dogs why they have hatred of american whites who took or killed everything that made their culture great

  • They should have cast real Native American Indians instead of Jeff Chandler and Debra Paget.

  • we are talking about acting skill in this movie and not about filming a documentary.

besides, it was the producer's take to hire those actors and actresses he'd wished because he'd paid to make this movie.

  • @vincentyeo88 , Apache had biggest battles against Mexicans in Mexico territory.

There was a great battle between Mexican troops of Gen. Ignacio Pesqueira vs. Apache warriors of Mangas Coloradas, in Sonora, Mexico.

Victorio and Apache Warm Spring had a great battle in Chihuahua, Mexico, against Col. Joaquin Terrazas Mexican troops.

  • the movie was done on the 70's the same period with others hollywood production where chinese roles was played by "native american white " .... remember .... Kung Fu .... crue reality ....

  • @PeterFirthFan Different time and place, my friend..Vincentyeo88 did a marvelous job..

  • @PeterFirthFan first time I agree with you 100% but all things considered the cited actors were competent. and the spirit of the film toward natives, considering what was prevalent at the time, is refreshing.

  • vincent how do i bring up the scenes from this movie? i have limited computer knowledge.

  • Great film. It's known in Italy with the title: "L'amante indiana".

  • peterfirthfan-or-peterfirthfaggot--wants to sleep with James Stewart--and he's upset that the man is dead--that's why he'e picking on him.anyway; if James Stewart ws alive --he would have shot Peter firthfan in the nuts--(if he has any)--for being gay!

  • @PeterFirthFan Stewart doesn't look like a pedophile though he played one- jeez the guy is like middle-aged! But he's far from being a gay or pedophile in real life..he's been married with kids. But somehow Hollywood loves to pair up some dirty old man with some young hot chick so to sell their stupid movies!

  • peterfirthfan--how does somebody "look like" a pedophile--idiot? boy; are you ignorant! a pedophile can look like the average person-YOUwouldn't know unless there's crucial evidence-that's too big a word for you-"crucial"-anyway,Stewart was no pedophile--and the way you are accusing-YOU ARE PROBABLY A PEODPHILE YOURSELF!--AND TRYING TO HIDE--by pointing the finger--let's have a look at you--peterfirthfaggot!

  • Honestly people. You have to see a movie and the context of the times it was filmed in. I love James Stewart and this is a great movie. I think Native Americans were used in the filming.

  • my very favorite James Stewart movie! debra paget was always so lovely and stewart and chandler were superb! thank you for this video.

  • you are most welcome.

  • broken arrow is a superb western jimmy stewart at his finest

  • I thought Debra Paget..was part indian. She has those high cheek bones.

  • To let u all know real Apaches from the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona were used as background people. I should know my grandfarther and others from my tribe were cast in the film. Now let their be no doubts or arguments.

  • Why did they cast that transvestite, bisexual Jew "Jeff Chandler" and that white girl in blackface Debra Paget?

  • Thank you! Finaly somebody who enjoys a movie and not any stupid argumentation. Thank you again!

  • They should have cast real Indians.

  • no, not necessary because this is a movie and they get the actors whom are available.

like in the Kung Fu tv series, they've got David Carradine and not Bruce Lee.

  • Kevin Costner cast real Indians when he made Dances with Wolves.

  • Well, I have been looking for years already for this great picture. Now I only found the beginning.

Where is the rest of it ?

It is not only one of the best and most inspiring, it simply is the best ever made of this genre.

  • one of stewart's finest. bandelero was good too. as was shenandoah

  • Wow a movie from the 50s that portrays Indians in a good light.

  • Was is all about letting cruelty, meanness and hate reign. It is about money, power and control---and yes, about stealing territories and homes away ....so we call the other side--- the real owners of the land...the enemy, and kill and abuse them. How civilized ! Nothing has changed---We humans go on acting like the fools we are....as if there is honor in killing other human beings....STUPID!!!

  • nice video though, I like that old western voice of james stewart a lot.

and no trickery, real arrrows flying!

(no apache arrows I bet, arrowheads would break againt an old tree)

  • My granfarther was a background cast member in this movie. Most of the people are real live apaces from The Fort Apache Indian Reservation. I myself am a Apache and Proud of it.

  • thank you very much for writing to me.

  • Yeah but the chief was played by that transvestite Jew Jeff Chandler, and Stewart's child bride was 16-year-old Debra Paget. Surprised a movie made 60 years ago was allowed to promote pedophilia.

  • It's true that most whites who were captured alive by the Apaches died horribly over many hours or even days, depending on the skill of the torturer.

" Always save the last bullet for yourself " was a popular expression back then.

  • Hello.

I`m Mexican, born and live in Chihuahua (It`s in Northern of Mexico).

As you probably know, Americans and Mexicans fighted against Apaches. There was a terrible war in Chihuahua, and history says that in a battle, Apaches made prisoner to a Mexican officer and was burned alive.

  • bull, read some books

mangas coloradas the great apache chief was tortured burned alive and cut his head off by americans in 1860 whilst coming in on an invitation

cruelty was on both sides but the whites started it and where the invaders

  • Read Juan Mata Ortiz, was burned alive by Juh and Geronimo near to Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico.

  • yeah and so? ask mangas what happened in the early 50 to his family gunned down with canons or aks eskiminzin of the aravaipas apaches of what happened to his 144 followers mutilated mostly women and children. what does show 1 case when whole villages got wiped out.

    geronimo rules.

  • Don´t be angry my fiend, I'm just writing about history.

There was good and bad people in Apache, Mexican and American.

  • history is facts and numbers and who started what and when and who was the invader. a detail to underline apache cruelty is not history. apaches were roaming untill the 1900, all got killed

    eventually brutaly like masai.

how come talibans can hold out to us army with dromes and heath view and laser misiles and apaches could not hold out against the sullen cavalry? because they had families to protect, camps that got wiped out. otherwise they would still be there.

  • I´m Mexican, and Apache-Mexican war was part of the history, and also Comanche-Mexican war.

But war is part of history, even Apache and Comanche were enemies.

Thank God, Mexico is paceful country, I mean, doesn´t invade other countries.

War against Apache and Comanche were heritage from Spaniards.

  • Where do you from ?

  • from europe, france and holland, there were most of americans came from!

spaniards made fierce warfare and crimes on the indians. would have loved to live on the mexican border with apache and comanche raiders coming by!

  • But England, Holland, France, etc. did slaves traffic.

In that time, Apache and Comanche hate all europeans.

  • North of Mexico (Chihuahua, Sonora states) was Apache territory, also USA southwest (Arizona and New Mexico).

  • And remember, that was war time, and happen cruelty and not justice .

  • It is difficult to understand how anyone could see this as a racist movie-- unless they have brought an agenda of their own to it. But those who apply labels and make generalizations embody that very quality which they claim to despise-- intolerance. margotdarby has the right of it. And if one takes the time to watch the whole movie objectively, the whites -- with the exceptions of Jeffords and General Howard-- come off very poorly indeed. Thank you for posting.

  • that's entirely your point of view and you're entitled to it.

if you wanna ban this movie, you might as well go on and ban every movie like this in the entire Hollywood archive.

  • You fool! Jay Silverheels is a full-blooded Creek. The little brave is an Indian too, as are most of the Apaches other than Debra Paget and Jeff Chandler. And don't say "Native Americans" when you mean Red Indians.

  • dilouge is real and straight like real life makes you sad cause you know despite all the technolgy and advances in living and education were still defining a man by his skin colour and asuming what he is from what we put together not what he is to himself and his here and now

  • thank you for the alert, and i appreciate the information.

  • sure, it is!

every cowboy and indian movie is such that the cowboy lives and the indian dies. however, a movie like that is meant only for entertainment. read a good history book and seek the truth from facts.

  • Apache like all the rest of us...Some good, some bad. Nobody has a monopoly on cruelty. What cruelty was inflicted on native americans when europeans arrived. Why? Why does it always have to be war? There is abetter way. Good film. Affected me as a child. Would like to see the rest.

  • thank you for your noble thought.

in those early days, there weren't those civilized rules of law, and of course guns won and arrows lost. that was one of the reasons why Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, and the Americas were colonized by the West.

  • can someone add the entire movie?

  • Good movie!

  • woah, my grandfather was in this movie somewhere. I guess his line was "Pahashka, me so no one.....NO ONE." I dunno maybe it was this movie. AHe laughs about this sometimes, he was actually a Hopi native that was living in Nevada at the time.

  • Jimmy rules. Jimmy, Clint Eastwood, and John Wayne are the icons of golden cinema

  • right on, those were the good old days.
