Actually, they have functional nav computers (developed by the Ixians) in the last couple of books, but Mentats are still being used. Miles Teg is a mentat, as is Duncan Idaho.

They had information storage devices in Dune, which share many similarities with computers used today, but nothing very advanced. Not even navigation computers for space travel -- they used guild steersmen high on spice for that.

I'm guessing all computers; they were pretty zealous about making sure that even a calculator wasn't functioning.

The only bitch of it is Mentats were in short supply, and it really wouldn't be practical to take Piter to high school with you.

Also, it's not really a crack-type of drug. If it can be compared to anything, it'd be more like a super-high powered amphetamine. Crack rots your brain, while things like Adderall make some people more focused.
