The reason black holes are believed to dissipate is because of hawking radiation which is an unproven theory.
The natural phenomena that occurs is hitting a stationary object (earth) whereas the LHC is making these collide its not replicating the natural process.
I love how science is seen as final...I think that may have been how students in the middle ages felt about their calculations of how many angels could fit on a pin, or in this past century how scientists felt CFCs were a good thing. Too bad one is more theology, and the other just happened to destroy the bonds between the ozone layer's particles. Not the best idea to think you can know the outcome of experiments with any sort of finality.

The Universe has been around for much, much longer than that, somewhere in the vicinity of around 16-20 billion years-but it's really an unknown figure. As for why we would build a machine that can potentially destroy the earth? It would be great insight, but no definitive answer sadly. The current means to determine the age of the universe is to literally look up and peer as far back in time as we can, but our current telescopes and means of technology can only see so far. It also dubs the question of wether we would be able to see further than from the point of when time actually began, try wrapping your head around that one. :)
Uhh antimatter isn't dangerous. It's been thought that antimatter particles are created all the time, they just anniahlate so fast that they cant be isolated. CERN has a couple of miligrams of antimater I think.
I think the Higgs Bosun might go some way to explaining Dan's preoccupation with making Dan's life a nightmare. We all know from our partical physics lessons at school that for the Higgs Bosun to exist there would need to be an exact opposite. (anti-matter if you like.) HOORAY! A NEW DAN AND DAN! ... i too have been consumed with fascination about the CERN project and the black holes. but i must correct you, dans, because death by black hole would not be instantaneous; rather, the process of being excruciatingly slowly sucked into a black hole is called "spaghettification" and this name is QUITE apt. i myself woke this morning at 6am feeling for any stray gravitational pull. at first i couldn't tell, but decided there was none, and fell back asleep.

This machine doesnt have the power to destroy the universe. A theory is that there is a super massie blachole at the centre of every galaxy and I cant remember the last time one of them destroyed the universe.
And if a blackhole was created it would take around four years before it destroyed the Earth, in ...dum dum dum...2012.....2012 is a load of shite aswell btw.
