I used that technique using PVC pipe to build a pond cover frame for my mother's pond a few years ago and it worked great. Although I haven't built my simulator yet, I'm going to use that technique on certain parts of it so that I can disassemble it in sections for transport.
If you use the hex head screws with a 5/16" head, you can chuck a 1/4" drive 5/16 deep socket right in the drill. Depends on the drill's chuck size of course, but you get the idea. I use self drilling screws at work all the time. Keep up the good work!
