and bravo Valentina, I've listened to pretty much every Heroique in all of YouTube, and I still find this the best by far. You really do have a Chopin spirit like nobody else
I've decided that after i have finished my Royal Conservatory Grade 10 and been to University majoring in music, that i will devote my life to learning Chopin's wonderful pieces, or should i say MASTERPIECES, and in fact master them and play them with such passion like Valentina does in this AMAZING video. And that, is all i have to say.
her right and left brain must be EXTREMELY DEVELOPED. Seriously, imagine a cat scan of her while she is playing... !!! This is basically channeling Chopin....this girl is off the charts amazing.
She renders the dynamics of this piece better than many older virtuosos I have seen. Such an old soul in such a young person.
Many like to attack this piece as though it's only about the aggression, but often fail to delicately finesse the airy passages that provide the contrast.
If you want to know how Chopin is SUPPOSED to sound - this is the artist who does it - BRAVO!!
This is my favorite piano music of all time. I've wanted to play it since I was 13, but I didn't start playing the piano until age 50, so I may never make it. But listening to Valentina play this is almost as fulfilling.
Someone said they pick Dislike if they know of a "better" performance. That's as stupid as saying you dislike all of your friends except your "best" friend. Horowitz is great. But performers are different, not necessarily "better" or "worse" . I Love Horowitz: adore Valentia
@Smmcroberts A) I have been playing for 50 years and performed this piece publicly at age 12. This is one my very favorite interpretations. B) No matter, you CAN play this....DO NOT EVER THINK THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!! Simply slow down the tempo a little bit; the middle section octave word requires some knowledge of octave technique (relax, move your left hand in a counterclockwise circle) and practice - that;s All! Good Luck!
@MusicStudyMan Maybe you should confine your comments to videos at the level of your understanding (e.g. wet t-shirt contests) and leave art criticism to the mature.
@MusicStudyMan If you have to ask, then I guess you'll never know. In any case they can experience pleasure not directly involving their genitals, and they know how to appreciate art for art's sake without high-school level attempts at shocking others with their asinine vulgarity.
My God, this is his gift to mankind! The human being lifted to angelic heights! A bit much? I don't think so. Here is the combinations that make it so. Beauty, passion, drive, talent and a feminine soul to project it all. Valentina has all this and more.....
haha ok i love this woman bet you have to admit that she plays it a little bit to soft with her great wonderfull hands i will never be abel to do it like here but so a little bit harder at some parts would be better though its her style to be soft ^^ whatever i love you agoshina give me youre number haha :P
I like the version, but there is a section missing. The main theme is supposed to be played twice at the beginning, the second time with chords and trills and slight differences too for the left hand...That's weird O_o
This is a feminine version of this Polonaise. There is not the martial spirit than you could find in other pianists, but it is so beautiful and nostalgic. I love it!!!
@TheMandrino From what I've read though I can't exactly picture Chopin himself as a very masculine person. Rather the opposite, so I think it's appropriate :).
I love the way her hands move. They're appear stiff but are acutally amazingly agile, she presses into the keys firmly and steadily. And hardly misses any note at all. Her hands are like fixed into a certain position when its time to play a chord and she seems so confident that the keys shes pressing are correct and the result is, she hardly misses even on technically challenging pieces like this.
Beautifully done, but an entire section is missing. I guess this is the shorter version. But she still plays it lovely. I don't care what the critics say below. You play everything absolutely beautifully.
@lllllllllllllll88 there is no section missing... is it? I've heard this piece from lots of artists, and even heard it in concerts; not to mention that I am practising it, and this is the version they (and I try to) play always, same extension.
@mojazka - Oh, thank you. I just got back to this person today myself. lol And we're both talking about the precise same time frame. lol Thanks again. You really know your Chopin.
@lllllllllllllll88 - I might also add to my comments that it's human error. We ALL make them. Besides, if this is from a play, she may have left it out intentionally due to time constraints, or whatever...
@evifnoskcaj - I strongly disagree. This song is in 3/4 time similar to a waltz is why it has that rhythm but it definitely is NOT choppy. Not at all. There may be some note mistakes, but that simply comes with being HUMAN. Hello? NO one's perfect, my dear. It hardly deserves "yuck." And her rubatos are fine.
But you're entitled to your opinion as I am mine. ; )
@lllllllllllllll88 This is NOT a song. Rhythm can determine where to place the agogic accents, but it does not imply a complete halt of the phrase. Her rubato, which you decided to ignore, is completely overdone and horribly misunderstood as she does not speed the tempo back up in order to have that "pull and push" or "take away and add" of a true rubato. Simply taking the time away by slowing the tempo makes the performance boring and slow. That's simply the definition and the style.
@lllllllllllllll88 You are right, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some opinions have evidence in them and are far more objective than others. Also, all humans are indeed human, but some humans do not like making mistakes -- at all. These humans would ne'er dare to share a recording that has mistakes in it.
@evifnoskcaj - You ARE an idiot. You must be talking to the wrong person. You must have me confused with someone else. I never said that. Someone asked me the question and I replied to them, but other than that, READ what I wrote below.
@lllllllllllllll88 Once you are done submitting word vomit in your inevitable response, maybe you will realize that Valentina Igoshina is not perfect, nor is she really as ". . . in love with Chopin . . ." as she professes.
There are a few hardly noticeable mistakes here and there as well as some parts where she could make easy improvements dynamically, but otherwise it is absolutely glorious ... much better than what I've done with this piece.
Wonderful piece, wonderful woman, wonderful interpretation, very good technique. Her fingers look very elegant while moving, she plays it very smoothly and yet quite into the emotions of the piece =) favorite interpretation of this piece.
But on THIS piece, I think Ignoshina doesn't show the fire that the Polonaise demands. If you compare it with the Horowitz or Rubenstein, you'll see what I mean. Admittedly, that's a comparison with the greatest Romantic pianists of the last century, and that's a high standard.
@billification2010 - You're comparing her to tow MEN. She's very feminine and elegant, so of course she wouldn't play like Horowitz, who was a good technician, but not a good musician (my opinion), and Rubenstein who played for 80 years vs. her 20, perhaps? That's an unfair comparison. Valentina Igoshina plays this piece, and all of her music very lovely.
How old is she, and how long has she been playing? I've played for seven years, but I can't seem to get the nice, heroic touch in this Polonaise. If she's young in piano years, she's got potential. If she's a veteran, then kudos!
This sounds great, but I like Martha Argerich rendtion more. I can't explain why. There's something in Argerich version that Igoshina does not have. Anyway, they are both great.
@shinobikakashihatake I could say the same thing, but vice versa (for me there seems to be something about Igoshina's interpretation that Argerich doesn't have). But, like you said, they are both fabulous.

Si, Valentina es una chica bonita. Quiero tocar este misma de musica en el futuro. Valentina es un musica maravillosa! Perdone si mi Espanol es mal. Estudio Espanol en mi colegio.
when i put this on my headphones it sounds so much better. i can also hear the dynamic variation better as well. she plays quite loudly in the end, perhaps shes holding back because the steinway is so damn loud. ive seen her hammering piano keys in other performances.
thanks im flattered that you thought it was an amazing comment. it was actually my comment. if you dont believe me ask pezza132 yourself. i was at pezza132's house when i wrote this comment, and i wrote it on his computer, not noticing it was logged in as him. i know for a fact that pezza132 doesn't listen to classical music or have a passion for it that i do. and besides, why would i take credit for that comment when there are so many other amazing (perhaps more amazing) comments i could take
it is part of the film "the strange case of delphina potocka" and it has short breaks in which igoshina plays some of chopin's finest works. if the breaks are too long, the film would be too much igoshina and not enough of the story of chopin.
the piano has such a powerful sound, especially in this, tristesse and raindrop. the lower register also has a strong, kind of overwhelming sound. and, to top this, it has a brilliant pianist playing on it. BRAVO!
bravado. Afterlall, this piece is the soul of Poland and Chopin wrote it to show his contempt of Russia's takeover of his homeland...A Russian pianist should take this into consideration when daring to play this sacred work of genius. Other than that, a masterful performance....
65 years ago I was a wannabe classical pianist, but I gave it up for a career in the military. I used to play a lot of the Chopin pieces she plays, but I never played them with the beauty she does. That's not to say I didn't get standing ovations on my bases when I played them, but she is so at ease and her fingers just fly across the keyboard hardly touching the keys but making magnificent music. BRAVO
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
iHeavenlySword, it's a pity that you made that comment showing your ignorance since she didn't skip ANYTHING in the beginning, or throughout this difficult piece.
It's also a pity that you spelled pity with 2 T''s because it magnifies your GED. lmao
Well i'm sorry that i made a little mistake in my last comment (not...) and she DOES skip a part in the beginning. If you listen to her performance and read the sheet music, you will notice (at least, you will notice if you're not completely insane) And don't get me wrong, i love her performance, im a huge fan of her. That's why i think it's a piTy that she skips a part.
i'm not sure if i'm in love with the girl or the music..... probably both!

Incredible! She was so young at the film's issue (21, I think), and by now, she's one of the most accomplished young pianists!

when i put this on my headphones it sounds so much better. i can also hear the dynamic variation better as well. she plays quite loudly in the end, perhaps shes holding back because the steinway is so damn loud. ive seen her hammering piano keys in other performances.

lol, pezza132 didnt actually make that comment, i did, but i said it on pezza132's computer, not realising i wasn't logged in as myself! LOL!
andrew190495 2 years ago
@andrew190495 you're just taking credit for pezza132's amazing comment.
MaesterCman 2 years ago
thanks im flattered that you thought it was an amazing comment. it was actually my comment. if you dont believe me ask pezza132 yourself. i was at pezza132's house when i wrote this comment, and i wrote it on his computer, not noticing it was logged in as him. i know for a fact that pezza132 doesn't listen to classical music or have a passion for it that i do. and besides, why would i take credit for that comment when there are so many other amazing (perhaps more amazing) comments i could take

credit for?

lol. i know. i was just kidding around.

why does she skip a section around 1:08?

it is part of the film "the strange case of delphina potocka" and it has short breaks in which igoshina plays some of chopin's finest works. if the breaks are too long, the film would be too much igoshina and not enough of the story of chopin.

the piano has such a powerful sound, especially in this, tristesse and raindrop. the lower register also has a strong, kind of overwhelming sound. and, to top this, it has a brilliant pianist playing on it. BRAVO!
pezza132 2 years ago 2
The opening is too weak. It lacks passion and
bravado. Afterlall, this piece is the soul of Poland and Chopin wrote it to show his contempt of Russia's takeover of his homeland...A Russian pianist should take this into consideration when daring to play this sacred work of genius. Other than that, a masterful performance....
MoebiusTripper 2 years ago
Yes I agree the opening needed more 'oomph'.

BRAVO

Regardless of the improvisations, it is superb. Even fresh.

Such a pitty that she skips a part in the beginning... she's awesome though :3
iHeavenlySword 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
iHeavenlySword, it's a pity that you made that comment showing your ignorance since she didn't skip ANYTHING in the beginning, or throughout this difficult piece.
It's also a pity that you spelled pity with 2 T''s because it magnifies your GED. lmao
PianoCriticsKilller 2 years ago
Well i'm sorry that i made a little mistake in my last comment (not...) and she DOES skip a part in the beginning. If you listen to her performance and read the sheet music, you will notice (at least, you will notice if you're not completely insane) And don't get me wrong, i love her performance, im a huge fan of her. That's why i think it's a piTy that she skips a part.
lots of love <3

Perhaps not as fiery or barnstorming as the "Heroique" Polonaise might be in the outer sections, but the trio is thoughtfully sublime.
