William Windom plays a man who's soul is dead altough his body is still alive. This look from his eyes - unforgettable. His struggle to find words - touching. His sobbing - heart-wrenching.
He is doomed and he knows it. His death later in the espisode is the only logic consequence.
yes well done indeed. thanks for posting. However,I still think/believe the alien race/
Borg theory. 1)it's travelling through the galaxy refueling itself as it goes and I always thought it was heading for the Delta Quadrant although this was never confirmed or denied in this episode.
You really have to respect Spock for stating "It looks very much like Commodore Decker's planet killer." so calmly under the cirumstances. I think most people's reaction would be "OH SHIT WE'RE GONNA DIE"
William Windom is my favorite guest star of the original series precisely for his performance in this part of the episode and later when he does the Captain Queeg imitation on the Enterprise. It is nearly flawless, and Shatner works off of it wonderfully. BTW, I like your special effects so far, especially what I've seen of the Enterprise and the planet killer. Better than Paramount's re-mastered version! The Constellation may be a little overdone but that is minor quibble.
It really pisses me off when people make fun of Windom's performance here. He's playing as exactly as any actor could the kind of insane grief stricken emotions anyone would be feeling if they watched their entire crew of 400 slaughtered, with no way to help. You're trapped on a crippled ship, your crew are begging you to save them. You. Cant. Do. Anything. His reaction, in my book, is perfect. Dare I say, genuine. These visual effects are actually quite good! Well done, Moriarty.
It's ironically amazing how years later, Commodore Decker's son: Captain Decker is forced down to Commander and relinquish the Enterprise by old Kirk. Jim owned them both...and what's even weirder is the Doomsday Machine & VGer were opposite sides of the Borg Collective.
@mymyharlow "There was, but not anymore!" No one can match the gravitas in this scene...top to bottom, one of my favorite sequecnes in the entire series. "Bones, you ever hear of a Doomsday Machine? No, I'm a doctor not a mechanic." Classic!
Geez, I remember when TV shows of such quality were commonplace. Now it's beyond the comprehension of the American Lumpenproletariat today.
Hell, the youngest kids of the 1960's used to talk about Star Trek and shows like it! The cartoons of the 1960's are high brow by today's standards! We were supposed to be the generation that would do interplanetary space travel.
That's all gone now. Kids today are being trained to be serfs and slaves, who exist on the internet.
@sweetsweatyfeet Shatner's acting is not humbled in these scenes. He is the straight man to Decker's shell-shocked character. Fantastic contrasts are being worked out in the entire episode. You can tell that, beneath his natural commanding posture, Kirk is amazed at what is unfolding in front of him.
Over the years I have heard that some of the "trekkies" knock this episode, I think it is one of the best ones ever, the story, acting, writing, effects, etc. are all really good. It is one of the "intelligent" episodes where the characters seems to be really thinking about their situation.
Here's something I've never understood, though. Why does Kirk say, "I'll stay on board and get her ready"? Get her ready for what? For Decker to take command again? He just killed his whole crew. It's not like Starfleet is going to give him another crew and put him back in command. Can you imagine the reaction of the Starfleet cadets when they find out they're assigned to be Decker's new crew on the Constellation?
Never throw away a perfectly good starship even if she's slightly banged up. A little hull work some new engines a fresh coat a paint and she's ready to be put back in service.
First off, to PrfMoriarty, you did an awesome job on the animation of the ships, the machine, and the asteriods. I also thought the intro was great, especially the way the ship comes right at you on the first pass.
@1213grandjeep, he wasn't insane, he just had a very serious case of PTSD, but nevertheless that is one of the finest guest actor performances on Star Trek that I have ever seen!
Although I've only watched the first two segments of your work I'm quite thoroughly impressed with the FX job. I think it's even better than the CGI work that Paramount did for the restored TOS. I look forward to further efforts and keep up the most excellent work!
When I was a kid and saw this in the mid 70s, I thought that the insignia on Commodore Decker's tunic was a pretzel - always thinking who would want to be a starship that has a pretzel as their logo?
little bit star treck trivia for you..... "matt decker" was will deckers father, will decker being officer decker in star treck the motion picture.the brigde of the "old" enterprise, that was the brigde of the reliant in star treck two.
This is the most impressive Star Trek ever. It deserves a reboot -the entire disaster of the Decker crew. The horrific nature of the tortured captain is terrifying and captivating. His suicide was also notable.
@whiskeyify IF Kirk was on the Constellation the photon torpedoes are connected to warp drive which was gone on the Constellation I wondered why Decker didn't fire photon torpedoes when he took command of the Enterprise!
@calimar28 True I meant when Decker had the Enterprise on the offensive I wondered why they didn't fire a massive volley into the mouth of the Doomsday Machine. I've always wanted to pit the Doomsday Machine against a Borg Cube that would be a battle!
This was the episode that turned me on to this show in the first place. I was about seven or eight years old and was fascinated by this show and the rest is history.
You know, I hadn't even seen the original episode before. I'm rather glad I saw yours first, so I can enjoy it fully, as if this was the 'original'. Beautiful detail and composition. I was genuinely frightened when I saw the planet killer. Haven't seen the next chapter yet, and all I can think is 'they're soooooo screwed!" :D
@Watcher3223 That was actually some great acting. William Windom was brilliant in the role. Delivery of that line was crucial to convince the audience he was very disturbed by what he saw.
One suggestion: 8:20 would appear even more impressive if the Doomsday Machine was but a black silhouette coming out of the central star, as if it had just been feeding there.
Shattered Universe for the ps/2 did a good job recreating this episode along with many others. I also think George Takei and Walter Koenig played their roles perfectly.
Is this new Youtube format screwing anyone else? Every so often the page sticks, it doesn't freeze it just becomes stuck one one page and none of the icons work, neither does the refresh button or the back button! The audio comes through, but the page stays the same!

I've always had two question about this episode:

Second, would it have made a difference if the Planet-Killer's anti-proton beam had been even slightly impure...?
